Default ESM P-51D build thread.

I'm building a P-51D and will make different modifications and changes to suit my taste. It will have a four blade 20" prop, which is about scale. I want it to look like the 442nd RAF planes, as they are particularly beautiful to me.

Here's the scheme I'm considering: http://www.vintagewings.ca/Portals/0...Recovery18.jpg

Right now I'm working on some basic cockpit detailing. It won't be a full cockpit and pilot, but enough to not look empty under the giant bubble. I use a 3D printer to print lightweight models. The wheels and tires are also printed, from rubber and plastic.

The sliding canopy is done:

Oversize instruments installed. I Might remake them the right size later on.

The wheels are done. Now I just hope I can find space in the wing for my 90° retracts to work. I have made wedges for the mounting beams. Fingers crossed. I'll find out when I get my robostruts from Tower Hobbies.

Battery hatch has been cut. I used a knife and scored until I was through, and it took forever. The fiberglass is thicker than any cowl I have seen before. I will make two frames to support the edges of the two parts and keep the shape.

I'm 3D printing new exhausts and will use the stacks for ventilation of course. I think a lot of air will be allowed to flow through the fuselage to the radiator outlet behind the wing as well.

The wing servos are installed. Robostruts are cut and adapted to fit, and the retracts work well. I hid the flap linkage, but used an exposed linkage for the ailerons for the sake of leverage and resolution.

I've been working ont he doors today. It's always daunting to start with, but then it just seems to work out. So far so good.

The reduction drive is just about finished. I need to make a mounting structure for it with room for batteries. It was printed from Taulman 910 nylon. Very strong and tough. I used the same technique for my Tigercat drives, but this one is a little beefier.

The landing gear is done. Works great now after hours of fiddling.

The temperature is dropping outside, so I can only paint for a moment before bringing it back in, so I'm trying to get the boring bits done. I think I will make the latch for the cowl today. I cut out an opening for the battery tray in the firewall, and have made the motor stand off mount ready for installation.

The paint doesn't stick to the base layer I used. This is bad news. I though ti was the same as the flaking paint on my other ESM plane, but this time it turned out to be my fault.

I had to strip the fuselage and start over. It's finished now though.

The Edmonton Special is coming to life.

The propeller is finished. I need to make a proper shaft for the gearbox to install everything. It's just sitting loosely on the shaft now. The prop is 21x15,7".

I took some better photos of the plane outside. It's cold, so I only took a few before running back inside.

Working on the wiring today. All the controls are wired up, but the hobbyking tail retract and Hobbyking main retracts operate in the opposite direction of each other. I can't reverse the tail actuator internally because the limit switches are built into the circuit board, so I have to get a servo reverser to avoid using another channel, which I want to avoid because it would mean I would power the tail retract from the flight control BEC. I have a separate BEC for the landing gear operation.

The photo shows the view under the hood, so to speak. The power plant is made to fit. The shaft is made with a steel prop seat silver brazed on. The ESC is installed in the bottom of thw cowl. The air intake under the chin provides air onto the motor and ESC, which then flows into the fuselage through a hole in the firewall bottom and will exit out the rear radiator flap.

The cowl hatch is released by a lever in the cockpit. That's why I made the canopy open in the first place. Ignore the bendy antenna. It got hit by the lever. Gotta make a stop so it doesn't happen again.

Hi
Really interesting project. I liked the ESM kits, just the retract mounting points in wing were really poor designed and weak... Anyway I have not heard from them for a long time now.

To your Mustang power - did you measured it already? I would like to see some video to get a better impression.

I have not run the motor yet. The old motor has a problem so I have to replace it. It's probably an internal short. It was in a crash this summer.

I made some hard points for mounting the tanks. I think I will use one screw to mount the tanks from inside through a little hole in the bottom of the tanks.
