Default Road trips: 2020

May 22,23. Dawn patrol at Airmasters club in North Bend, Ohio.
Miles: 40
That time of year again.
It been since last Fall since I've added anything on this site and it has improved dramatically. They, finally, made it user friendly.
Living in Cincinnati, Ohio, it has either rained, snowed or too cold or too windy to fly until this weekend.
I spent yesterday PM'ing my plane for this meet.
With the coronavirus, the club wasn't sure how many would attend. It was a great success with 28 pilots which is what they usually get.
I've had two flyins cancelled, so far, this season. I can see that happening when they are on public property, ie : airports, etc when the club has no control over closings.
With easy to maintain a 6' distance (1/3 scale, probably only 1.5'!) and being outdoors where the sun kills a virus within seconds, I see no reason not to have a flyin.
This club decided not to furnish food or beverage.
A very nice day around mid 80's.

A nice 1000' all grass runway. light wind down the runway.

There were quite a few RV's for those that stayed 3 days.

1/2 scale.

Dawn Patrol (cont)
I see they limit the number of pictures to 25 versus my other sites that have no limits.

Well, so much for this site being user friendly: getting errors on uploading the remaining pictures.
Loads 15%, stops and then says issue loading picture.

This morning, the uploads, finally, worked.

Dawn Patrol (cont)
Got errors again trying to add a picture to previous post.
Errors trying to add more pictures to a new post.
I see this web site still has problems.
Guess I'm limited to adding pictures only once a day!
Surprise: Only need to wait 3 hours to upload more pictures!

I'll be doing a lot more of this!
Local club meeting.
So far, 4 events have been cancelled from May to June.
Nothing, yet, for July.
At this rate the 20, or so, meets a year will be reduced to just a hand full.
One positive is, so far, I'll save about 2000 miles of traveling!
Got a couple flights in on my TF F4U.
Got there around 6 PM and, after the meeting, pilots flew until around 8:30.

web site failed to post pictures.
Saved the print and, then, edited the post and pictures were uploaded.

My other club's meeting is Thursday but it's suppose to rain that day.

Club field is on a private, full size runway.

May 28: GCRCC club meeting.
My other club that I'm a member.
With all the flyin cancels, looks like I'll be doing a lot of flying at my local clubs.

Get upload issues statements from this web site for pictures.
Will try later. Tried getting out of thread but had to log out and back in to get the upload to work:

About 550' of paved and another 200' of grass on each end.

Scratch built.

Other than plane interests among members.
67 Pontiac with 56K miles and no rust.

Flightskin used to cover wings.

cool double split flaps.

Working splats.

Nicely weathered F4U.

Looks like the next flyin is at Wilmington, Ohio. Father's day flyin, if it isn't cancelled on June 20. A one day event.
==========
Went to GCRCC on Sunday and got a few flights in.
About 15 pilots showed up.

June 1 (Monday). Buddy called to go flying at WORKS club.
Fortunately, I had a plane charged and 'ready to go'.
He brought his 190 and I brought my F6F and we did three formation flying flights.
About 3 or 4 others, also, were at the field.

One more big flyin cancelled.
Now, that's about 4,500 miles saved on traveling this summer!

Four are the warbird's alliance flyins:
Lancing, Mi.
Goshen, Ind.
St. Charles, Ill.
Fond Du Lac, Wis.

Dawn Patrol at local club.

Going back out to the local field this Saturday, again.
Feel free to post what's happening in 'your neck of the woods'.

Stuff:

My Robart air compressor's batteries are shot so I took it apart for possible battery replacement. The plastic ends are force fitted into the center metal tube.
Had to un-solder some wires from circuit board to plastic end to remove internal assembly. Looks like Battery plus should be able to install new ones.
I bought a larger version (more power) on ebay as my primary air compressor. The new one is a little longer as well as a little larger in diameter.

Last Fall my Ziroli SBD dauntless GT-80 lost about 300 RPM's and then would not start.
Put the magneto sensor from a G-62 and the engine started so I put the old one back on and it started but ran badly (maybe a bad connection on the connector).
Rebuilt the carb and all's 'good'. Back to around 6,400 RPM's.
Planes around 10 seasons old.

Right Robart plastic rim tire on my Ziroli shrunk down to 86" F6F got a 'flat'. Had to put some foam in the tire and caulk between the rim and tire.
Six screws hold the two rim halves together.

More stuff:

Ziroli SBD ready for flight.

Got tired of looking for needed screws so I bought some plastic boxes from either HD or harbor freight and spent a few hours organizing wood and machine screws.

Next, I think I'll work on this Ziroli F4U that I picked up a few years ago.
Will not go my usual anal self but just build a simple plane: no doors, no full detail cockpit, no moving canopy, no functioning cowl flaps, no hidden switch doors, etc.
Just something to take to the field.

A DLE-85 should do the trick. Some Robart gear.

June 6: Saturday. Got some flying in at one of my local clubs.

Grass was just cut on Wed.

Doug brought his pop up: Got to around 86 degrees.

Got one formation flight in with Doug's 190. Second flight, my muffler fell off.

Greg's chopper.

Jim's cub.

Very calm day so this 'bird' also has no trouble flying!

June 20: Father's day flyin at Clinton RC club in Wilmington, Ohio
Miles: 45

This is only the 2nd flyin that's not been cancelled in my 'neck of the woods'.

A very nice full size runway with the grass cut very short for the models. I wasn't sure how many would show up but a very good attendance: I'm guessing around 40 pilots.
Plus they had food. Got a double cheese burger: ahhhh.

Nice thick areas to keep non flying planes from going into the pit area.

Got there early before a lot of the pilots showed up. Was 91 degrees but the humidity was low so not bad.

Pilot's meeting.

Always good to see old friends again.

Doug and I got 4 formation flights in; one with 3 of us.

AMERICANA:
My favorite time of year: warm and farmers have just planted their crops.

Wilmington.

Paul Bunyan's chair.

June 26-28, Mint julep at Rosewood RC club in Elizabeth, Indiana.
Miles: 140
An excellent 800' paved runway with grass and 200' extensions on each end.
This is, normally, a contest event but was changed, this year, into a scale flyin.

The view from my 'living quarters'.

Dawn patrol group.

A very nice all grass X shaped runway in a valley perfect for WW I planes.
Excellent turnout with 34 pilots ranging from NY to Minnesota and down to Louisiana.

July 18: general flyin at FAST club in Brookville, Ohio.
Miles: 60
A very nice 600' all grass runway. Grass must be no more that 1.5" high. Located in the middle of a farmer's field.
Been there for 30 years. Grass was in excellent condition: they said they have it professionally treated twice a year.
A very hot day at 95 degrees. Really didn't notice it at the field but by 4 pm at home, I did while unpacking!
This week, normally I would be at a multi day flying but it was cancelled so I'm going to 'one day' flyins at fields that I have never been too in the past.
Always fun to fly at new fields and meet new people.

I got three flights in: two formation with my buddy, Doug and his 190.

A first for me for seeing this color combo!

A Nosen P-51. Nicely done.

Nice to see some 'younguns' at the field. They were members of the club. Had one of them spot for me on all my flights.

July 25, Big Bird flyin at FAST in Lima, Ohio.
Miles: 114
A very nice all grass around 800' long. A good turnout of pilots. I think around 30. For 5 bucks they ordered pizza and everyone got a half a pizza plus a beverage.
Mid 80's with almost no wind and blue skies.
Another field that I've never been to, in the past.

Frank, a friend from cinci, was there.

three foamy 80" T-28's flew formation.

Phoenix 95" spit.

Two turbines were there.

My friends Chris, Randy and Curtis from Michigan, showed up.

Experimental plane landed and stayed for about a half a day.

Railroad tracks run behind the field.

Doug and I got 4 formation flights in with one group of 7 at halftime show.

We stopped at a 45 year old hobby shop in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Building constructed in 1896.

A very nice 'downtown'.

Went to one of my local club's fields, today, to get a few flights in and to check the repaving of the runway.
In the low 90's today but, fortunately, we have shade trees behind the pit area.
I believe cost was around 16K. Members were asked to donate $100 so we wouldn't 'break the bank' (Everything was voluntary). We raised most of it and got another 3K from AMA for improvements.

The 'hill' got paved since it had a few pot holes.

I understand the runway was extended about 50' which, I believe, totals about 600', now.

An exit pad was made at the left end of the runway. Since it is new pavement, the transition to grass is pretty good.

Care needs to be taken on the new pavement as there is about a 3" rise from grass to pavement. I took off on the grass and killed the engine on the grass, after landing, and just pulled my plane over the new pavement. Pavement to grass movement is OK but not vise versa. Some fill dirt will be added, later.

One dead stick.

One retrieving pole for tall trees!

The ultimate warbird! While packing my plane in the trailer a wasp decided to have 'dinner' in my trailer!
