DLE 65 in War Birds
Does anyone have a DLE 65 in a war bird yet?
Seems pretty quiet on the Gas Engine forum about this engine. I just ordered one and it’s going to go into a TF Corsair to start with and maybe a TF P-40 after its broken in and settled.
DLE claims half HP more than the 61 at 7500RPM which sounds good to me. The best improvement I saw in the photos of the parts is they seem to have applied a molybdenum coating to the piston skirt. Compared to the 61 piston it would seem to be way ahead as the 61 piston is very, very basic.
Also notice there’s no option for Pitts mufflers from the usual players. If you know of one let me know. I’m going to see if the 61 muffler works for now.
I’ll be using a Xoar set of props to see what works. 23x10, 24x10, 24x12, 24x14 and maybe a composite 23x12 x 3. It’s going to get Klotz oil and Non-E 92 Gas and an NGK CM-6 plug. One thing I always check on DLE’s is the reed block and reeds so I’ll be looking at that and making sure they seal correctly.
That’s it for now till the engine gets here anytime now.
If this is a let down I’m going back to the 55RA!

Hey Mike that’s a nice build and I see you went with a Vario Prop. How did you adapt the hub to the engine?
Eight weeks is a long time to wait for a muffler. I hope they developed it just as you ordered it and they’re more likely in stock now... that would be nice! Since I’m taking my 61 apart anyway I’m going to compare the muffler to the 65 and see if it fits.

Thanks Chris;
If you contact Vario Prop you tell them what engine you are using and he pulls everything together that you need to have it work on your engine. The only thing I have left to figure out is how to properly attach the spinner.
The long wait on the muffler was due to the fact that the guy who does all the welding and building for the mufflers was out for 2 weeks with covid I think; so they were backed up big time in filling orders.
They do not make them up ahead of time but make your muffler when you order it and you go into a que for building it.
I got mine and I cannot complain it is built excellent.

Not to be “that guy” but a friend of mine has the dle 65 in a top flite fw-190 and loves it. He said the performance is the best he has seen in that cc range. He replaced the saito 84 w/ray English mods and said the dle is better.

The DLE 65 is installed and running in the Corsair now. I’ll be breaking it in and the maiden flight will be in a couple weeks. It started right up with minimal effort, just a couple flips. I’m looking forward to this one and hope it’s a monster!

Pretty awesome engine so far! Verticals are great and it’s really responsive. Might be the right choice for the TF P-40 next! I’m going to add more pitch to reduce the peak rpm and get a little more top speed. Pretty hot day out here, 103F! Might have to install the air speed sensor next!
91 Non-E gas with Klotz full synthetic oil. Xoar 23x10 painted.

Well I don’t have any experience with DA’s but here’s the data from the day.
RPM 1230 TO 8658
TEMP 185F
Usually DLE’s are less expensive and pretty solid engines and I’ve had many from 20 to 65cc. Maybe somebody with telemetry can post their data for comparison.
What plane are you thinking about putting the 65 in?
