Default 20% Spitfire Mk XI by Fliteskin Aeroscale

Here is the beginning of a new project inspired by John Blyth's story of PR944. He flew over 50 Photo recon missions to Berlin un-armed and without escort!
Here is a bit of background:
https://fearoflanding.com/history/am...1944-and-2005/

And here is the movie about Lt. John Blyth story

The Mk XI just like the Mk XIX, is a subject seldom modeled. In my opinion there aren't many Mk XIs being modeled partly because the windscreen and the chin cowl are different.
Now with these options available, the choices of schemes and varieties open wide.
Fliteskin Aeroscale has been producing scale warbirds since 2004. The emphasizes is in accurate outlines and detail. No compromises.
For this project, I used the tried and true Brian Taylor approach supplemented with the spectacular documentation from Monforton Press.
A plug for the fuselage and other parts was made to reproduce the complex lines and skin detail.
Wing and tail feathers are built up from laser cut parts.

The scale of 1/5 (20%) yields a wingspan of 88.5" (2,25 m.) and exact 5" spinner. The kit will allow building a MK VIII, IX or Mk XI. The cowl is also complete at the scale location. This will allow to retrofit a Mk V cowl in the future.

The cowl plug was covered with litho and metal tape to reproduce the skin detail:

At what scale?

Ah..nm I see it..
So you are planning this as a composite ARF or short kit?

Please post pictures of inner structure, once prototyped.

Txmustangflyer,
yes it is a short kit. It requires building skills, not a beginners kit, but the hardest which is the fuselage with multiple complex curves, is all done.

The fuze plug has the panels and flush rivets built in.

Ok, so you would supply the shell, formers, etc, We get to basically set it up as we need based on engine, gear, servos..

The fuselage skin looks good..

Hope to see you do a complete prototype of it..still really interested in the internal structure. Not that I doubt the quality at all. I'd just like to see how it builds.

The laser cut kit also provides formers for the fuze and servo trays:

Canopy rails from Dynamic Balsa

Mk XI canopy plug

A plug for the Mk XI canopy and windscreen was made and vacuum formed. Cockpit formers installed.

Plans for the wings wood rib and spar or foam core?
For a prototype build, it looks like its going to be a one and done from the cut quality. Its looking really good JG.
What you thinking powerplant-wise?

Looks straight forward.

Definitely adding to the must build list.

might be in three years...lol. build season schedule is full for at least one...watching with avid interest. Might give Wyoturbine's spitty a run for its money :-)
Kind of an off topic question, but does pertain to what will be next on the build table...how well does fliteskin hold up to two part epoxy paints like Klass Kote. Want to make sure no adverse reactions may occur with the resin used in fliteskin.

I don't see why there should be adverse reaction of epoxy paints over fliteskin. I know Klass Kote is used over other fiberglass based surfaces without problem. You can always do a test.

Moving over the Stabilizer build now:\

The frame builds straight using the jig, laser cut parts and 1/4" tube.
Once built sheet with 1/16 balsa. Moisten the sheet to conform the compound curves.

nice!

again, very straight forward.

Its probably not needed, at all, I tend to overthink and err to caution, would be to sheer web as well.
Again, not doubting the design or builder, by any means.
Assuming Robart-style hinges from the looks.

Correct on the hinges. Robart large hingepoints.
Joining the two halves with 1/4 CF tube through 3 ribs..
Next is elevators:

The elevators and rudder are built over the core which has the ribs in the scale positions. Choice of tall rudder or conventional;

Thank you Mike,
I covered the tail surfaces with SIg Koverall, dope and rib taped with Mick Reeves 1/5 tape.

Rib stitching is done with white glue. I found some tiny clevises on Ebay for the trim tab pushrods.

Wing building is conventional, lots of laser cut liteply parts. It is designed to be split for transportation. I built mine as one piece wing.

The center section is built first using the tube joiners.

Its looking like the only "short" part of this is the stringers and skinning materials.
Thats not a whole lot...one thing bugging me there is looks like the retract has to be cut into a wing rib...but, that may be addressed already...

From the plan underneath, it looks like the retract rails and doublers are meant to distribute the load that would normally be carried by the rib, so, non issue.

Basically sheeting and stringers are not included.

exactly, I'm not seeing a whole lot of block carving (yet anyway lol)
Wouldn't be a good choice for a first build attempt for anyone, but, a challenge for intermediate skills, and a scale competition contender for advanced builders.

One thing for certain. Structure is going quick. Not sure how much time you've put in, but it seems you are completing a section a day.
