RE: Z P38 project
M 51, the super charger detail is by longese not me. I've yet to do mine. I've read the sync thread, intresting. I might get one. What scheme are you going to use?
Jeff, The outboard radiators i'm leaving open with screen mesh to simulate the radiator cores. The inboard ones will be closed off.
I should have some new pics to post on Sunday. Regards G.

I'm doing the original "California Cutie" circa 1944, not the restoration project a lot of guys seem to do.
Longese... Can you tell me how you did the detailed fan on the super charger?

RE: Z P38 project
Progress report, The super charger/ boom/ wing cap/ fillet is progressing okay. I thought I'd be able to do it in one application of resin/ micro balloon filler but that didn't happen. I've just finished sanding in the first batch and need to fill in some low spots. The over all result in general is very good. I've also discovered that Zirolis' cowls need to be "fixed" as the air inlets are to long.

G...
You have to try this stuff... http://www.stitspolyfiber.com/superfil.html
I have used it for a number of years and will never use anything else. It's a two part epoxy foam filler that is super strong, easy to use and feathers out with alcohol, oh... and its is verry easily sanded. Much better then epoxy and micro baloons.

Here are some pics so far on the boom/ super charger fillers. A bit more filling and sanding and they should be ready for final trimming in. Also a couple of pics showing the large wing fillets that should meet or exceed factory standards. More later.

Cowls are now "fixed" and the boom/ super charger fillets are finished. I've drawn on most of the major panel lines on the booms and the top of the wing and will begin tapeing them, after that its primer and paint. I've recieved stencils from Get Stencils great guy and very quick on turn around. I'll post new pics after she is all primered. Regards G.

Well I've got it in primer now. My panel lines turned out really well. I used .015 chart pack tape. I'm in the process of sanding for the final time before I paint. Here are a few pics of before I primered and after. I also took a close up of one cowl with the tape on before the primer. Regards G.

Here is the cowl with the panel lines in prime. I've laid out the zus fastener locations and todays exercise is to attempt to burn them in. Will post later today the success/ failure. I've slipped into this scale it out thing but, I'm also trying to KIS. Its a fine line I guess. Regards G.

I feel your pain but believe me its worth it[8D] Our yellow P-38 took about 60 hours to apply the rivets and fasteners and we still add a few every now and then. Your lightning looks great, I will read this thread to the end.

An unexpected problem has showed up. Good thing for me it happened on the table. A door cylinder developed a leak. I've ordered some replacements. After I replace it shes ready for flight.

Well, I'm getting closer to getting it airborne. Still hasn't flown yet though. Yesterday I had another air leak and today the right engine quit cooperating. I do have those pics but I need to resize them. Will get right on it. Stay tuned. Regards G.

Here some pics of plane# 8 of the 459th F/S Burma WWII. This is a P38J5LO. The squadron was called the Twin Tailed Dragons. They decimated the japanese air force in the CBI in 1944. What do you think of her?
