Default best "scale flying" b-17 kit?

ive watched the american eagle b-17 kits fly at bomber field and dont know if there are on a "timmed" limit, but these guys were flying there 17's as if they were fighter planes..... not at all scale. heres the question for the r/c b-17 guys...... which kit out of the american eagle or the don smith b-17's can fly the most scale? nice slow flight..... anyone?[]

DON SMITH!!!!!! I just completed my 107th flight tonight. Very scale plane, very slow and realistic.

I am going to give Mike Kramer's plans a go. He lives close to me here in Atlanta so I have had the pleasure of seeing the plans in person. I am quite impressed with them and should have my set within a week or so. I am jumping in with both feet, both hands and a couple spare sets, a few heads and a lot of balls. I have never built a plane before and I am starting with his 1:6 scale plans (207"), wish me luck, I'll need it

EDIT: Mike also has a set of 1:9 which are basically the same size as Don Smith's and a smaller 1:12 available.

I have the american eagle and can fly it at 1/3 throttle and am told i fly it scale. But I have chased 40 size mustangs and passed them to prove a point. Scale flight is totaly on the pilot. some people just don't want to throttle back. I love it just crusing by wuth the engine running rich trailing that thick exhust.

Nope, I met him on here as "mkramer".

Donnie, you SOB!! You got me thinking...and thinking...and thinking, which lead to me calling around to all my building buddies here in Atlanta. I am now to scared about the 1:6 not coming in under 100lbs once I added fully functional turrets, bomb drop, figures at all posts, etc so I have dropped down and am buying the 1:9 plans now. I hope to get them from Mike Friday. I guess once the 1:9 is built and I have more personal experience to go on I might go back to the 1:6.

Look for my own building thread soon

Sorry I got you thinking. I would like to hear follow ups on a 17' B17. It would probably take 30 servos and 20lbs of engines. Why did my question get you thinking anyway. Just wanted a websight.

I have seen a number of old Westcraft B-17 and up to the American Eagle B-17 fly at Bomber Field for years. They both seem to fly well, but you are right some are flown like they are fighters. I am currently building a American Eagle B-17, thought it will not be ready for Bomber Field this year. I have had a set of plans from Don Smith and they are good but getting accessorries from him has been a problem. After a number of e-mails with Michael Kramer I have a set of his plans for the 1/9 scale B-17 (same size as Don Smith).

The details are great and the plans give you details for a F or G model and details for build working gun turrets. He is going to offer a complete wood kit and parts with plans in the near further to offer a much better detail fiberglass fuselage than American Eagle. I will have the plans at Bomber Field this year for display, for those you are interested. Those interested are inviited to come by and check them out. Just look for the COR-MAC(Corsicana Miniature Aircraft Club) banner.

Yup, that sounds about right. I am getting so excited about this project now. I have a 27% Extra kit that will be here either today or tomorrow, I hope, that I am going to build out before I start on the B-17. I want to get as much hands on with as many kits as I can afford before I tackle the B-17. I will be testing the Hacker C50 14XL in it with different battery packs. I am still trying to figure out what the B-17 will use.

Hi all, been a while on this thread. I talked to Mike ( [link=http://www.wingspanmodels.com]Wingspan Models[/link] ) at Top Gun on Saturday, saw the wood kit and it looks great. By the way I'm the one designing the cockpits for these B-17's! Right now I'm working on the 1/9 cockpit. It's a combination of vacuum formed plastic and resin parts. It's design is following my high standards for cockpit kits! I've always wanted a B-17, glad I waited for the best one.

Hi flydoc, thank's for your interest in our cockpit kit. I'm in the middle of the prototype right now so I can't give any details yet. I may start a thread in the multi forum so people can follow along. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks,

Dion
