Pete: the lights are home brew - Arduino Pro Mini controlling Sparkfun Picobuck LED drivers with 5W LEDs using aluminum tubes as heat sinks. They’re very bright!

Michael: This scheme is from the Corsair that’s in the Smithsonian’s Udvar Hazy museum in DC. I added a little highlighting to the panel lines (very subtle) but plan to keep it “museum-like” which wouldn’t be weathered. I know - took the easy way out - but I’ve never seen this particular scheme recreated, so it’s somewhat unique.

Good looking Corsair!
I painted the head of the DLE 55RA with Krylon high temp black paint to hide it and the muffler. You might like to try that to hide the mufflers in the cowl better.

Nice! One of these days I'm going to get mine back off the shelf. I never mentally recovered from a couple of painstaking weeks trying to get the flaps working, and that was about 3 years ago.

I was without power for the better part of 4 days last week thanks to Hurricane Sally, seemed like a good time to get the Corsair wing off the shelf and dust it off. Basically have the wing ready for primer, if I can just dedicate some time to the dang flaps!

Horizon has a sale on Saito and I finally bit the dust and bought the engine I have wanted for my smaller .60 TF Corsair. 120R3. Perfect fit inside the cowl, as if it were made for it. Getting it mounted on my test stand and run some fuel through it before completing the install. I need to clear an area in the garage so I can spray the clear on the fuse and wing so I can finally finish installing everything.

I thought I had asked this before. Thanks for these, found out T1 is off in length by 1/8". Height is dead on. Now to go back to the plans and verify the same.

Hmm, plans must be off, 13 3/4" for T1, T7 though, is 9 1/16". 14 11/16 LE to TE. 11 3/8" at T4, yet the aileron diagram with T4 is 11 1/4", and the actual rib from the template is 11 9/32". Going to adjust the lengths just a bit to match what you posted for the rib lengths. Thanks again.

I finally got the lengths correct on the tip ribs, but now I'm concerned the rib heights are off. I forgot that rib 7 is much thinner and from rib 6 the spar is angled up sharply. When I line all the ribs on top of each other, I notice that T3 has a larger drop, and then T5 has a larger drop. The interesting thing is that T4 is a perfect match to the plans. Guess I will have to get some 1/2 x 3/8 basswood and find out.

I finally got my hands on a TF giant Corsair kit. I originally wanted to pair it with a Saito FG-60, but I am now seriously considering the UMS 5-55 radial.
I would very much appreciate your comments or recommendations on these radial engines.

I have the kit w a dle 55 and it is plenty of power. I have the arf with the Saito 60r and still plenty of power. Keep in mind that the stock kit elavator rod setup may flex a little at high g”s if you plan to build this as a racing high speed Corsair with a super up engine.

I have a TopFlite Corsair kit also . I have been collecting it for a couple of years now . I also have an EME 70cc Twin with electric start . I built a test stand for it , and also assembled the cowl . It fits " JUST " , I hope to build it soon . If you look at the second pic , at the bottom of the arrow , you see a round hole . If you look really close you see the top end of the spark plug cap .

So my TF Corsair has had the Saito FG 84 RE Mod in it. Highly modified to get that done by the way because that engine is too big for the stock cowl and the firewall has to be redesigned. In short it’s a cool combo with great power however it’s heavy too. The plane ends up at the upper end of 20lbs close to 30 ready to fly. You must know how to handle the plane at this weight and in all conditions because this gets sporty real quick if you don’t fly by the numbers. I was not having as much fun with it so I replaced the FG84 with a DLE 61which was not a good combo in my opinion. Now the Corsair gets a new DLE 65 so we’ll see if that’s as good of a combo as I hope it is or I’m going back to the DLE 55RA, light and fast.

I have flown the newer Hellcat on the FG60 and it’s a nice combo, flies pretty scale and not over powered. I’ve said before the Hellcat flies better than the Corsair but I’m not sure if the FG60 would be a good match with the Corsair. They have similar dimensions and stats but my gut feeling is the Corsair would be underpowered with the FG60.

I have flown a large scale Lockheed Sirius with a UMS 7-77 on glow fuel. What I can say about that engine is its heavy and requires a long break in and lots of cam adjustments. Once it’s setup it’s very fuel efficient and has good power for a 100 inch scale kit build. The glow system kind of sucks and it would be way better on ignition or converted to gas. They tend to have issues with plugs stripping out requiring an insert to strengthen up the head. I’m not sure if that’s across the product line or select engines or just ham handed guys wrenching the plugs into the heads buts it’s been documented.
So the smaller 5-55 may be underpowered for the Corsair if it fits in the cowl. If you want a 5 cylinder for the Corsair then I say take a look at the Saito FG75 5 cylinder. From memory I believe it will fit, runs on gas and should be a good match to the Corsair.

Bottom line from my experience with the Corsair, 12 plus years and 4 going on 5 engines later, is to keep it light and balance it on the aluminum wing spar regardless of the engine. My favorite combo is with the 55RA. It tends to be kite like on approach to land but in most cases very manageable but sporty. The other extreme is heavy on approach and lands like a meteor but the sound of a radial is just so choice…

It certainly has been a long time since I posted to this thread. Just over 14 years, according to the calendar. Last post was about the maiden on May 4th of '07. I guess I stopped posting because there wasn't much to tell. Within the first 10, or so flights, I had two gear failures and belly landed it both times. Both times resulting in breaking the wing. First time wasn't that bad and quickly repaired. The second wheels up landing resulted in more significant damage including a broken spar and wing sheeting, top and bottom on both sides. To say I was bummed would be putting it mildly.

The Corsair followed me through 3 moves with very little work being done to repair the damage. It kept being moved around the shop until April of this year when I finally decided to get off my butt n fix it up. Sorta wondering why it took me so long 'cause it went back together fairly easily. It's far from perfect but, from 20 feet away, it looks good enough for me.

Last Saturday was the re-maiden and I'm happy to report that all went well. Put two flights on it and look forward to many more.

Specs, for those that may be interested...... G62 on the nose with Robart pneumatic retracts. A mix of servos, Futaba, JR and Hitec. Futaba Tx and Rx. Balanced as close to recommended CG as I could measure it. Weight is just shy of 27 pounds, dry.
