Jim, I do not have any answers to your questions. It looked good from a distance of 3 feet.

I agree wholeheartedly and I expressed that to them. It's refreshing to see a different airplane, let alone 4 of them. And all unique subjects.

i too have been looking at the mauler.i sent them an e-mail and asked what type covering was on it .the answer was china covering.i don't know much about that covering but the pic looks great.i plan on getting the mauler soon.anyone find out more info please post it here

Hi Guys. I bought a Flyboy Mauler at AMA convention in January and am just about done with it. Just need to install pilot and canopy and cowl. Cowl is cut and ready but not screwed on yet. Nice kit but I made a few changes. If you invert the engine the fuel tank is above the carburetor so I side mounted my Saito 180. I also moved the throttle servo to the back side of the former in front of the servo tray so I would have a straight shot to the carb. The kit comes with 8 rockets and a drop tank (missle?) that goes on the centerline. I found a source for the old Vortac bombs and bomb releases so in installed a release on the centerline and now I can alternat dropping the drop tank and bomb. The rockets are mounted on pylons on the wing but other than a picture there are no instructions for their installation. The plastic fairing that goes on the bottom of the wing and the canopy need trimming and there are mold lines showing where to cut but that is not mentioned in the instructions. The tail wheel assembly comes pre mounted and there is a wheel collar under the strut mount to keep the strut from moving up but nothing to keep the strut from dropping down. Suggest soldering a washer above the metal tail wheel bracket that screws to the bottom of the fuselage. The instructions show all movable surfaces moving 48mm in each direction but that is impossible. That would reguire a 90 degree throw in each direction. I think they mean a total throw of 48mm but that is still a lot ( too much) I have about 18 to 20 mm throw each direction and dualrates about half that. They say to balance 80 to 85mm from the le of the wing but that is almost in front of the main wheels. I will check that out and give you more later. All wood construction with iron on plastic covering. More later.

I forgot to add that the cowl is fiberglass and is really nice.

I agree that its nice to see diff things coming out for this price range. I wonder how easy it would be to drop in some nice retracts into these birds? Dont think with too much work you could have a fun scale warbird that wasnt a mustang lol

The Mauler is ready to fly now. I made a few changes since my Feb 11 post. First my typo error said I put a Saito 180 in the plane. WRONG Make that Saito .80!! Secondly I put a 3/32 piece of ply between the rear retract mount and the retract itself. Gave me about a half inch forward sweep on the wheel itself when extended but does not affect the retracted position in the wheel well. That should solve the nose over problem I ran into at our field (cracks in the runway). I used a Futaba FP S136G retract servo but only because I happened to have one on hand. I suspect any low profile retract servo would work just as well. All the rest of the servos are standard ones that I also had on hand. It has been windy and rainy the last few days but is supposed to be nice on Saturday (Feb 25) so I will give it another shot.

I see that Claude McCulloch built a larger Mauler back in the 60's that weighed around
12 pounds and he flew it on a Merco 60, so my Saito 80 may be more than I need but we'll see.

The Air Museum here in Oregon at Tillamook has a Mauler. The thing is HUGE. [sm=what_smile.gif]I believe it is the only one left.

If by SPAD you mean the Douglas Skyraider then there is a reason for that. The Martin was the AM-1 and the Douglas was the AD-1. Now in the beginning the Navy bought both. But concluded the Douglas was a better aircraft. So the Skyraider went on to fame and the Martin went to the Naval Air Reserve after only 2 years of service.

Do the retracts that come with the kit, do they rotate 90 degrees into the wing, like the corsair?

Here is a picture of a Mauler that I built in 1992 from Claude McCulloch plans. It had a 69 inch span and weighed 12 lbs. I powered it with a .90 Os FS. It flew very well. I donated it to the Martin Museum in Baltimore several years ago after competing with it in scale for about 8 years.

The CAF also has two Mauler airframes bringing the total number of Mauler survivors to four. One was flyable for a while but was wrecked. The other is not a complete airframe if I'm not mistaken.

Flew the mauler today (3-4) and it flew fine. I used a 13/6 prop on Saito 80. balanced at 95 mm or about 3 3/4 inches from LE. I have about 1/2 inch up and down on the ailerons. Does a 1 1/2 to 2 second roll. Could use a little more. On elevator I have 3/4 inch up and down on full rate and 1/2 inch dual rate, seems to be OK but may be a little sensitive on high rate. Not bad on low rate Tracked straight on take off but tended to want to nose over so be ready on elevator. Did not lose any rockets until I landed. I must have come in too fast as the plastic landing gears broke and it tipped up on its nose. The rear mounting ears broke off of one and the LG strut mount/retract piece cracked on the other. The front LG piece of plywood on the one where the ears broke delaminated. No other damage to the plane. Looks good in the air and tracks well. I will look for another type of metal manual retract. Something like Magatech has on their P-47 will fit well and may be a little stronger.

I purchased a p47 from this company , the quality overall is very good , the cowl was weak , I will add glass to it just for my own insurance .

If you are going to install different retracts, why not put on some struts as well? I left the field too soon. Thought you only broke the prop! It sure did fly well though.
