I have started building my Al Masters 335 80" plane again - has been set aside for about 4 years - I have Saito 125 in the front and I am not sure what I am going to put in the back - maybe electric or nothing at all - plane with the 125 and retracts weighs about 16 lbs. I am concerned about the CG - it looks to far forward on the plans? Need your on the CG - Thanks

I have the AlMasters 335. Great flying plane. if you can keep the weight reasonable, the single up front should be fine. On my 1st flight I blew the plug out the rear engine on takeoff....rotation. It struggled to get in the air but once up, it flew heavy and on edge but I got her down safely and flew it again. currently it is being refinished, added flaps and turning it into a night fighter version. The airplane is the same length as its width. I cant comment on the CG because I dont have the plans and didnt build her. I did contact the owner of Al Masters so he would be a good resource. I need to send him pics of mine when completed. Good luck and post some pics

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you have the 80" plane? what engine do you have on it? What does you plane weigh? could you check and see how far back from the leading edge at the fuselage is you CG?
You can see my 335 under construction at JR6596 gallery - it is now covered and I plan to have it in the air by our Warbirds event in June. It just need to have the hinges glued in some detail work done.
Thanks again - John

I am building the same 81" plane - I question the balance point on the plans? what are your thoughts on this? have you flown yours yet?

Plans call for CG to be 1-1/4" back from where the wing dowels fit into the fuselage at that joint - just does seem far enough back to me. Thanks John

These are videos of my 81" Al Masters DO-335. After the taxi and brake test I had to adjust the nose gear steering. The first flight video I spent trimming and testing low speed handling. It needed a lot of down trim for normal flight but less with flaps and gear down. The inverted flight needed a little down elevator so the balance is very close.

Nice looking 335 and excellent landing....well you stuck it. Is it maybe a lil nose heavy? and maybe consider lengthening the nose gear some . It would help with that rotation. Mine sits level and I haven't had a tail strike on takeoff

Very nicely done and sounds great!

Looks like some serious pilot skills were needed before you got some down trim dialed in and you intentionally set up and executed a pretty short steep landing approach

Did it "feel" tail-heavy??

Congratulations!

This is definitely a plane to avoid if you are not a dedicated builder flier ! I have two friends with the dreams of accomplishing it one day... But its a real feather in the cap to have done it ! Congrats !

Will give my take on my flight. Our field is at 5000 feet, the temperature was modest so density altitude not to high. When I started to climb out it felt tail heavy and under powered. I got some altitude and started to trim. It took nearly all the down trim and no aileron trim to finally start to fly well. The short inverted flight took some down elevator witch told me the balance was very close to right. I then slowed to trim with the flaps down and test the low speed flight. The landing approach was not quite as steep as it looked in the video because of camera angle and zoom. It touched down a little hard because I was a little late with the flair. This plane is a little sluggish in pitch at low speed because of the engines on either end of the fuselage.

With motor thrust on both ends, I imagine getting elevator response to feel like a more traditional plane could be "strange"
It seems like the plane would want to resist changes in course... there is some adventure to it !

My friend always says.. " If it didn't scare me once in awhile I would give it up !"

You might try lengthening your nose strut so it sits on more of an even keel. The rear thrust line is above the front's so it tends to compress the nose gear on takeoff. Thats why you have to give it so much elevator to rotate. Its definitely not for the faint at heart and every flight is an adventure. Version 3.0 is doing well with over 100 flghts now.
