Default Large Warbird

Hey Guys,
I wanted to start looking for a good quality large ARF warbird. I want something about 80+ inches with a gas engine. I would like a P47 Thunderbolt, A Zero or a Spitfire. Can you recommend something?

Thanks
Mike

I don't own one but have inspected and flown a Hangar 9 big P-47 gasser. If you like jugs, this would be a good choice.

Large Zero ARF, try Ultra-rc. They have a 92" Zero ARF. Hangar 9 has an 80" P-47 ARF. Contact Shaun Evans at Yellow Aircraft, I beleive he is importing a run of their Spitfire as an ARF, perhaps not all are spoken for.

From what I understand Charles, the owner of Y/A, has one left. Cost I beleive is $1,600.

LOOOOOONG thread on the Hangar 9 P-47 here:

[link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3205356/tm.htm]http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3205356/tm.htm[/link]

I'm currently modifying one and have found it to be an excellent kit. Built lightly, it doesn't take a lot of power to fly well. I'm using an FPE 2.4 (40cc) on mine. The link above has reports on everything from a G26 to 50cc engines, including some fairly heated exchanges on the merits of one over the other.

This thread will take you a couple of hours to work all the way through.

The Hangar 9 P-47 1.50 is 81.5" wingspan complete with flaps and retracts. I have one and it's a great ARF, and a super flyer.

Mike,

Some have had problems with the struts breaking but I've not had any problems. They are mechanical, and properly setting up the control linkage between the servo and the gear so that it won't bind requires patience. Air retracts wouldn't be too difficult to install because there is so much room to work. I had decided that I would do that if I had a lot of problems but, after somewhere in the neighborhood 30 flights, they're still going strong. And I had some pretty rough landings until I figured out the best technique.

This ARF is a real pleasure to fly, Mike. I've idled down the engine at about 200' to see how it would react in a deadstick and it glided in like a dream. I put a Zenoah G-26 in mine and it flies okay but there's no extra power if my thumbs get me in trouble. If I did it over, I would have gone for a slightly larger engine, perhaps a G-38. Personally, I wouldn't trust the light airframe, particularly at the business end, to anything larger though.

The RC Universe thread on this plane is extensive, and full of excellent advice. I highly recommend it to you.

Mike

World models has recently reduced the price on their Zero. Not quite enough to offset the cost of real retracts, but the stockers work well enough and it's a great flying plane.
