Bare Aluminum Corsair-- Anyone ever seen one?
I'm was thinking that my next project might be a Corsair and was wondering is anyone has a picture or some information on a Corsiar that was not painted, just bare aluminum . Maybe a factory fresh one that was being tested. Any information would be very helpful
Thanks

Sorry, XF4U1 was painted in silver, the top of the wings were painted in Chromium Yellow. I don't know about any of the racing planes after the war but you can always try.
Good Luck

Here's a pic of a Cosair at the Lowery AFB Museum in Denver, CO. Seems like it was a post-war racer. I don't know if it is bare aluminum or some gray paint. Also it could be in some stage of refurbishing. This might be a place to look for more info. I took another head-on picture but it is out of focus.

Ron, the airplane above is the same Corsair that I posted information on for you over at RC Groups. It's called "Big Hummer" and more pics can be found at www.aafo.com or www.warbirdaeropress.com.

Actually as I posted, it was painted and not bare metal. The wings of course were also partly fabric covered, esp the upper outer wing panels.
good luck

Look on this page:
http://www.air-and-space.com/Goodyear%20F2G.htm
Scroll down until you see the Bud Light Super Corsair racer. This may suit your needs, but you would have to heavily modify a Corsair kit to make it look right. Also, the USNR had several Corsairs in natural metal wtih blue wingtips and tails after the Korean War era. With a little digging or input from our Corsair pros you might be able to find one. They also flew several grey/natural corsairs with white control surfaces.

The F4U-7 currently on display at the Tillamook Air Museum operated in bare aluminum for a very brief period of time right after restoration. I've only been able to find one pic but I may be able to come up with others. Of course, any Corsair kit or plans you start with will need a bit of modifying to represent the limited production -7 but here it is anyway.

RE: Bare Aluminum Corsair-- Anyone ever seen one?
Don if you give me a heads up before you go to the museum I will try and meet you there, I havn't been there in years and I wouldn't mind seeing the new desplays.
Chad any pictures of the corsair with no paint would be great, I would like to have specific plane to model and I like some of the pictures I have seen but still need a few more.
Oosiksmith-- Boy is it me or does this bird look good in any color, I was sent to this site before and thought I had found the plane to model but was told that the silver racer is painted[] but it sure looks good[8D]
I think with all the modelers that have research the corsair, someone somewhere has just the picture I'm looking for so keep searching
Thanks for the help guys

Hi,
Just finishing a 100" Corsair in all aluminum for a display model..hardest part without a full scale to look at is the rivet pattern..still a great project.

Ron,
I've going to have a busy weekend but I will try to get some pics soon. I bought the mods from Conachen and before I resold it I pulled a model..trying to follow the full scale as close as possible.

Okay, try this one; a racing corsair in natural and red:
http://www.f4ucorsair.com/legends/race94.jpg
This site hase several pictures of it:
http://www.wingsmuseum.org/aircraft_detail.php?id=6
It would probably be easy to mod any kit to properly reflect this particular plane; it has clipped wings and several external mods to accomadate a bigger engine (mostly cowling and air inlets on wing root). If you need more pictures I'm sure someone who lives in Denver would be able to get you more pictures or you could contact the museum directly.
a_ghost previously posted a picture of this plane but thought it was in a state of refurbishment; not true, natural and red are its long term colors. Good luck.

N194G
Goodyear FG-1D Corsair, Bu#92050, carrying the N# of N194G, has been a Colorado resident most of its life. After military acceptance on may22 1945, and a hopscotch career with the Navy, the plane was struck from the Navy's inventory on 31 May of 1948, while in Minneapolis, the plane was then purchased by Jim Colbern who then passed it on to Bob Mitchem of Broomfield, CO. After being modified as a racer with clipped wings and a Wright R-3350 engine on the front, the plane was purchased by James Axtell in 1977 and has been in storage in a T-hangar at Jefferson County airport until recently being transferred to the Wings over the Rockies museum at Lowry AFB in Denver, where it is on a 5 year loan.
