How do you detemine scale of aircraft?
How do you determin the scale of your aircraft if it is not labled on plans or other material? My spit is 71", wingspan fuse is 56" long. CMP/Nitro 120 size.

It roughly 1/6 scale, the real airplane has about a 36' wingspan. Having said that, models are altered from the real thing to fly better, so thatsjust a rough estimate. hope that helps.

Dear Groundhugger
You can search for the full size wingspan using google then turn the fullsize aircraft span into inches.
A Spitfire has a span of 36 feet 10 inches.
So convert that to inches which gives 442 divide that by your 71 which gives you the scale
which is 442/71= 6.25
Say for instance you want all your warbirds to be 1/6 scale.
Divide the fullsize wingspan (in inches) by 6 or what ever scale you like.
Example Spitfire 1/6 scale and Hurricane 1/6 scale. The Hurricane by the way has a wingspan of 40 feet
Spitfire 442/6 = 73.6 inches
Hurricane 480/6 = 80 inches
Hope this helps.

Most of the time the wingspan is used as a datum, some people use the fusalage. If it's 100% scale, then it doesn't matter!
Find out the full-size wingspan, then convert it feet and inches to just inches, then divide the answer by the wingspan on you model. P-51 Mustang=444 inches/62 inches = 7.16 or 1/7th scale.
