Default Fly a warbird this Memorial Day Weekend!

As part of my Memorial Day celebration/observance, I plan to fly my P-47 (see gallery).

No matter how you celebrate, please remember those who have fallen in the line of duty. This last year, my grandfather passed. He served in WW 2 in the Pacific theater, then in the Berlin Airlift and most notably as pilot of Air Force One for JFK, retired in 1972 a Full Colonel. He is interred at Alrington.

I have visited the plane that carried JFK's coffin, and which evidently your grandfather piloted. It and many other presidential planes are at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Oh.
Sorry for your loss, and thank you for thanking veterans. The fallen ones paid the ultimate price, whereas others like myself don't consider ourselves heros, just doing our job. There are a lot of people who take freedom for granted and I suppose they just don't realize the cost.

God bless.

As a veteran of the USAF, I commend both your grandfather and your sentiment. I too plan on putting up my P-51 Mustang (see gallery too) with the family in attendance. My condolences for your loss, and my hat is off to your grandfather.

As a retired USAF MSgt, I too offer my commendations and condolences. My Corsair is still on the building table, but will be flown in rememberance of those who have served, and those who still serve, every time it sees the sky.

MY 87 year old Dad is still kicking. Flew F4Us for the Marines in WW-II and again in the Korean War. He's a tough old bird and the only time I saw tears in his eyes was when we buried his wife and when I maidened my F4U with his Korean War markings on it.

I was in the Navy 8 years. I went to Vietnam twice. I went to the Wall in Washington right after it was finished. Didn't know how I'd feel about it because I have a few friends on there. I walked away incredibly angry. Still am.

God Bless 'em all.

Mike

While on vacation this week, I had time to do some reading. I highly recommend [link=http://www.amazon.com/Old-Breed-At-Peleliu-Okinawa/dp/0195067142/ref=sr_1_4/105-2331687-5666020?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180257292&sr=8-4]With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa[/link]. It is a first hand account of these battles by a Marine PFC - a 60mm mortarman who was part of a handful of survivors of both landings. I also read "Flags of our Fathers" which paled by comparison, but was still very good. I found myself fighting back tears several times. I now have a better understanding of why my grandfather never wanted to talk about his experiences in New Guinea and the Phillipines.

Great Story link. Something about a broken hip that just turns things for the worse. My grandmother is 97. She was driving, organ for the church and well with the program until 3 years ago when she broke her hip. That was it. Went down hill fast and now she lives in a retirement home, dementia and the whole thing. I'm flying back for a visit next month but they say she doesn't know anyone anymore but she has lived a full life.

Couldn't fly a warbird but did attend the memorial service at Madingley Cemetary, Cambridgeshire Uk and layed a wreath on behalf of the the 361st FG.

3,811 Americans are buried at Madingley and many more are remembered on the wall of the missing - they will never be forgotten!

Unfortunately the weather on this side of the pond was so bad that even the birds were walking with high winds and heavy rain - so no F-15 or B-17 flypast this year.

However the service was fitting tribute to these incredibly courageous men.

Best regards

Jason

Great idea. I will, most definitely! Saturday my Harley Owners Group Chapter will be riding down to San Diego to visit the "USS Midway", Sunday I'll fly and Monday, I'll take part in the West Coast Thunder Memorial Day ride to the Riverside national Cemetery. I spent 6 years in the Army during the '70's and will always honor those who gave it all for this great country. God Bless the USA and all her allies!

I'll have the Corsair and A-10 out tomorrow. I'll also have my Dr.1 out - if anyone wants to shoot me down with their Spad or Neiuport, I won't take it personal

Planned on flying Saturday, but...eeek! calling for 20-30 mph winds. Plan a flight with the Corsair and Seafury Monday. Thank You and God bless ALL our veterans!!! Where would we be without them?

Hey Jeff are you coming down to Owatonna? Phil said there was a fly in and pot luck going on? I'll try to make it over with something.

Too bad about the winds the rest of the weekend

Great timing,
Flew my new Jemco P 47 a couple of weeks ago but had problems with landing gear lowering upon landing. Switched to a stronger servo for the retracts and made adjustments to feed some down elevator when retracts are retracted. Memorial weekend is perfect time to test fly this bird again.
