CJ gear works fine for rotators just make one simply mod , add J- B weld above the spring /scissors to the gear leg , this will keep them from turning under torque on landings and take offs .I have over 7 pairs of CJ , no problems at all and trust me I am not a "greese landing pilot ".
Howveer you absolutly have to make this mod or the gear will twist under load and bend and break the scissors .
As far as the 615 , its a continued reinforcemnet that robart should stick to giant scale , I gave them one more shot after years of swearing away the tiny set screws , drilling and hammering to assemble your gear and spending over $225 combined [:@].Thats why I went to CJ to start with , i do agree that sierra is the best , but be prepared to spend $295 for gear with scale scissors no air support so add another $39 for a robart air support kit

She's still doing great, although, it has rained here most of the week.
The last time I flew was this past Sunday.
I'm still having the same LG problems,[:@] but I was also experimenting with the stalls.
As it turns out, the reccommended throws are probably a lil' too high.
If the throws were set to 1/2 of the manufacturers suggestion (rudder and elevator only), the plane flies very well, with no bad tendencies...I ended up setting those as "LOW"
I then decreased the recommended throws on the rudder and elevator by 3-5 MM and have that as my "HIGH" rate.
That way I don't have such a bad stall even at high speeds.
Aileron throws are 2/3 of suggested on low rates, and the 2-3 MM less on high.
I like a fast roll rate though.[8D]
There's a warbird fly-inn at our club this Sunday (10-28-07), and she'll be flying in it.
if you live anywhere near, you should stop by...It should be great fun!

RE: .60 P-36 Black Horse
I believe i made mention of the stalling issue in my write up..I believe it's because this plane have a fairly sccurate to scale airfoil (it's just too bad they put the retracts in the wrong spot).
My recommendation to you is to apply full flaps at a higher altitude and practice making landings on an imaginary strip in the sky.
because this plane does stall at lower speeds, you'll need to fly her all the way onto the ground.
Once you feel comfortable with a minimum airspeed at a higher altitude, bring her in for the real thing.
As I prepare to land her, I lower flaps at mid-field on the downwind leg, (somewhere between 1/2-1/4 throttle ((G20ie engine w/ 3 blade 15" prop)), I turn base leg, then final and approach with a rather steep decent using throttle to manage this (mix elevator w/ your low thrttle setting if need-be), this keeps up the airspeed, then flair at about 10' past the end of the runway threashold...as I said, I'm still flying her with the throttle, and I don't bring her back to idle until the wheels atre on the ground.
this produces a safe and very scale-like landing.
Hope that helps. [8D]
FYI, I'd like to get the .90-1.20 size Spit as I assume it's built as well as the p-36...My only fear is that the landing gear is in the wrong spot again.
Let us know if you get one.

Creetings from Finland
Ordered month ago Hangar 9 P-40, and my intention is to fly with that next season (straight from the box). After that I start to change it to be P-36, because Finnish Air Forces had some of those.
Now my question is, has anybody else thought about merging BH P-36 fuselage with H9 P-40 wing? They both have almost same span (4cm difference) but P-40 wing is lot more scale with correct gears.
After conversion I should still have quite scale like Curtiss A 75 Hawk (naturally in Finnish camouflage) and one P-40 for sporting.

Sounds like a great idea to me...I had thought of doing that, but why not simply change the cowl on the H9 P-40 and viola, you now have a P-36.
When I 1st opened my P-36 and I saw the retract position, I almost made it an A75 Hawk with fixed gear & wheel fairings as thats how most of the foreign Hawks were.
A simple repaint job on the H9 P40 with the BH cowl would certaainly be an easy conversion...Only pronlem being is that the H9 bird doesn't have the split flaps does it ?
I know the H9 planes don't need them anyway, but it's a nice touch.

The airplane looks very nice. I have one question though, I have been looking at this airplane and the wing looks very flat. Is there any dihedral to the wing or is it truly flat?

f15iceman,
It has plenty of dihedral...I must not have shown any photos from that angle.
The airfoil is semisymetrical, and very scale-like.
As previously stated, the only thing wrong with it is the location of the landing gear.
I've since received the bubble covers from both VQ and H9, both will work and cover the area nicely ...the pic I've included is from before adding the LG blisters.
FYI, I had a deadstick, last october (my fuel line was rubbed by the read shaft bolt until a what was in it.
Anyway, 1 LG was ripped out form a landing in rough grass. but otgherwise, she held up niceley.
I wish BHM would make more .60-.90-1.20 size warbirds of this quality.

Okay, As the weather is still terrible here, so I'm going back to older projects and trying to get them plummed-up and ready for Spring.
I've finally put the correct Retract blisters on this plane.
I got them from a guy named tommy here on RCU who is a distribultor for VQ models.
He sent me the VQ P-40 Blisters...they worked out rather well, much better than the H9 ones.
Anyway, here they are installed~ [8D] They look kinda like Size 'D' cups on this plane, but they are way better than the mosquito bites that were there before.

the exterior is 3/8" of inch wide , the interior hole appears to be between 1/8 and 1/4 " but can easily be drilled , simply remove the set screws then drill . I tried them on my H9 corsiar after being drilled and they fit fine .
Trust me for the price you cany go wrong , I have seen the post that say "I am not impressed with the VQ struts "
Ok then ask yourself (because I own both ) the robarts and the VQ , ask yourself are they (Robarts ) worth $55 more --I dont think so .
For that kind of differance I want to see a major differance

LDM, you mentioned "CJ gear". As a newbie to this forum, not sure what brand your referring to. As my P-36 just came in, I'm VERY interested in this whole thread. Many thanks to all you folks for giving a newbie lots of ideas. Ken

LDM,
I USED THE VQ STRUTS ON MY SIG P-51b (see P-51B GAS BUILD THREAD)...DO THEY ONLY MAKE ONE SIZE (MINE LOOK A BIT SMALL FOR A .60 SIZE PLANE, HOWEVER THEY ARE A DIFFERENT STRUT THAN WHAT THIS PLANE WOULD USE) REGARDLESS, IT'S AS YOU SAID FOR THE $ YOU CAN'T HARDLY GO WRONG.

RE: .60 P-36 Black Horse
Does anybody have any ideas on maybe mechanical retracts for this bird? I really have a hard time paying as much, or more, for the retracts than I did for the plane. lol....Heck, if I could find a set of mechanicals that would be strong enough, I think I'd give 'em a try. I could always go back to $$Robart$$, or $$SerriaGiantScale$$. Ken

RE: .60 P-36 Black Horse
I take it you're referring to the correct type of 90 deg rotating retracts correct ?
If so, I'd recommend the H9 retracts for the p-40/ hellcat available through Horizon...the price is just right and most people have very few complaints with those.
VQ also makes an affordable set that can also come with oleo struts...
The only problem with mechanicals for this bird are that of course, you'll need to add a 90deg bellcrank, and that could be tricky.
on the onther-hand, since you'll already have to open the wing (like I did), I guess it wouldn't be that big of a deal.
God luck with that and please post pics for all to see when you're done.
P.S. I ordered the H9 wing blisters and wheel wells for this plane, but never used them.. i'll sell them to you at a super discount if you'd like to use them.

I think this plane flies beautifully and very scale like, i would recommend changing the LG, but otherwise it's a great flying plane.
Mine has a mean snap at stall, but it's also because i'm using and engine that weighs 3x as mucg as a .60 nitro engine.
I highly recommend it. [8D]

noflaps did you have to add tail wt.?
are your servo's in the tail?
mine is still in the box. bought it because it has always been a plane I wanted to do (because it could turn with a zero). just imagin how it could have changes history if it was on fair terms with the zero (instead of out numberes) and made a good showing against it in the first couple of encounters.

All the servos (except retract) are where instructions indicated...Even with a G20 up front the only weight I modified was the battery placement (just behind wingbolts) in fuse.
I haven't flown her in a while cince I've been getting radio interference.
My next big purchase will be spectrum, which should alleviate these problems.[8D]

RE: .60 P-36 Black Horse
There is a guy at my local flying field that flies his on electric power. I keep staring at it. The plane has good posibilities for a serious bash. I would use an OS .75AX.
Too many planes, not enough time!

Is this plane still being made, and who sells it?,I came across one site but they don't show it on their list of planes.
Thanks
