P-38 gear
Well the gear is nearly done, had hoped to get them finished & to Vic before the meet this coming weekend, but didn't work out, i do expect to finish them this coming weekend, but in the mean time, i posted a few pictures of what i have so far, to give an idea what they will look like. I plan to cut the nosewheel fork down a bit more, and will of course put the BP finish on them, but you can see the basic setup....and there is NO slop in these units....

go to the P-38 page. If it doesn't have 6/18 date, then hit refresh.
Lmk if you are interested in a set..... in this or another size...
Thanks!
Lenny

Terry... the list is getting long.... but I will add you to my list
Lenny, the retracts looks great. I think they will be plenty strong for this p38 and even a YP38. Thanks for your help!
Here is the canopy frame.... the canopy is soo clear you can't even see it LOL.

P38- Prototype
I am almost finished with a Yellow P-38. Can you add me to your list. I can not commit 100% till you know price info for kit and retracts. Thank you, Mike Krizan.

P38- Prototype
I would like to hear from everyone,
There are several list of items that needs to be looked at.....
1- Having some lasercut parts made (I don't know how much that would cost)
2- Going to mold a hollow core outer panels, this will add a lot of time to build the kit, but I have other options... such as foam outer panels.
3- Don't know for sure if I will have the retracts mounts already installed or how much work will it take to produce a kit that everyone would like.
Shindin's retracts cost $380, the other name brands are in the $600+ and Spring Air retracts do not carry the correct retract angle.
So I don't know for sure exactly the cost, but I am giving a range of $600-900. Big range....
If your interested, what would you like in a P38 kit????
Basic Fiberglass shell with foam core wings?
Spars and retracts installed?
Unsheeted or sheeted wing cores?
Full composite kit with molded outer wing panels with all the wood support already installed?
I would like to hear from all! and thanks for the kind remarks!
Cheers!
Vic

Me!
Hi Vic!
I plan on using Shindin Machine retracts in mine! (big surprise, eh?) However you decide to do the rest (on mine, anyway) is a-ok with me, as you know, I have some of your past work, and from it i would imagine the stuff you throw out is probably nicer than some companys' top-shelf items!
Don't forget to send me the appropriate drawings on the future project we discussed, so i can make any needed mods as i go....
I will start work on that one in the next few weeks....
And the spitfire gear is nearly finished,
thanks!
Lenny

Did you know that if the outer panels where molded (hollow core) you wont need to sheet, sand, fiberglass, add wing tips and put in panel lines. Not to mention you still need to add spars and wing joiner tubes to a foam wing?
A hollow core wing will have all this and it will be lighter than building a foam core wing.
It took me a week to add in the spars in the fiberglass fuse... review my website for details....
Please keep your opinions coming as it is helpfull for me as well as others!!!! I will however add comments and options that might be of benefit.
Cheers!

OPTION
Hey Vic, you could make a foam core as "standard", then offer the composite panels as an upgrade/delux kit option? Just a thought, as i am sure that there would be a noticeable price difference between the two...
You did still want the set of spit gear, correct?
Thanks,
Lenny

How about several options? like full kit with all wood and retracts but not installed, arf with all wood and retracts installed, bare-bones with the fuz, other glass parts, and plans for cutting your own wood, etc? that would give a range of prices, and save you some time on the kits for the people that like to build.

The molded wing would be an ideal solution. The foam option could save you some time and effort. I guess what I am saying is I would like as many molded parts as possible but would still be interested if only offered with cores. For that matter would still be interested if the kit only came with rib templates or template drawings.

P38- Prototype
Vic, I prefer to put in my own wood parts, ie, retract mounts and whatnot. As for the outer wings, I guess I would prefer the lightest method. I may do laser cut, built up outer wing panels on mine for just that reason. Plus, I plan to put in the fowler flap mechanism which might be difficult in a foam core wing.

Vic,
how much for the all painted/complete/ready to fly version!
I'm tired of building, have 5 here to build/finish, so it would
be more beneficial to me, to have you, Ray and Scottdog
just to complete one for me all painted up nice and pretty
and I'll do all your flight testing for you up here in the HOT
valley!
Todd
p.s. I think the glass fuse with composite outer panels would be fine, let me/us put in the fomers? Too many diferent options makes it to complicated for you? Maybe do that and supply drawings for the formers like on your Spitty fuse? my .02 either
way, since I'm first in line, doesnt matter to me
