Is that the old Jemco P-39? The Olive Drab one looks pretty cool. Starting on my Red Box version in about three weeks or less.

RE: P-39 Airacobra anything thread!
The quote below is from the "New Planes from Meister Scale" series of posts.
Guys, it looks like there's a chance we could be getting our Airacobra after all. Drop Dino and PJ a note of encouragement and thanks for the consideration. Just remember, the line forms behind me for the first kit!

Hey everyone,
I can't even begin to tell you how many emails I've gotten from you all! Thank you so much for everything you are saying. I want to make sure and clear a few things up. The P-51B is going to be the very next plane. We have the plans complete and we are beginning to work on the build. I'll be building two prototypes for Dino and I. After that we are looking at the next plane. To be honest, it looks like the P-39 and P-40 are going to be the top runners. This doesn't mean they are the only ones. We have taken into account everyones ideas and have made a list by popularity. Keep the ideas coming!!!

That's good news! I hope they decide to offer the P39. I couldn't wait and purchased a Tucano (a modern P39). I hope to maiden it this weekend. It's a very nice plane and kit. Took some work to get the retracts in, but looks great. What size plane are we looking at if it's offered?

I would guess (and mind you just guess) that if Meister-Scale does a P-39/400, it would be in the same scale as the other birds they do... 90-100 inch wingspans.
The American Eagle P-39 has a WS of 96" which puts it just over 1/4 scale. I would imagine we would see it around this size...

Eh? Isn't the wingspan of the P-39Q 362"? 1/4 should be 90.5"
Whoops, thats the fuse length... the WS is 34' or 408".... 102" is 1/4 scale and thats what a few if the Meister-Scale stuff already has for a WS.
Sorry folks... thats what I get for looking at the books too quickly.

RE: P-39 Airacobra anything thread!
Seems this thread is dying slowly... so may I share my progress on my top flite p-39 (old red box),
didn't feel like going all the way on this one like chart tape panel lines and glue drop rivets I think the
general outline of the kit doesn't justify the time it would require. So using an ink pen I came up with
what I would call 'Comic book scale' ... it does give a nice effect IMO. The markings are not all there yet
I painted them by hand using a paint brush only. Hopefully my pictures will be good enough to show detail.
Ok now go dig those P39 pics and post'em!

I like the Comic book scale title as well, but it seems to loose credibility for all the work...perhaps ARF scale or eyeball scale is a better term. I'll start posting some images of mine as soon as it warms up here.
It's sooo cokld out that I can't bear to go into my garage except for short intervals.[8D]

I did the same thing on my Zero and it looks great on the ground and at 3 feet away you can't tell they are drawn on the plane. Here's the modern P39:

Yeah and it flies great too. It lands like a jet though, needs lots of runway. I wish there was a nice P39 like this one out there. The American Eagles kit is nice, but it's 24 lbs. so I would have to go gas.

Thanks, maybe I should copyright 'comic book scale' ... , it's the first thing that came to mind when
I started doing it this way, but I kind of like the 'stand next county scale' gives me more room for
errors .
And to answer the question yes it's French markings 1944, colorful and I've never seen one anywhere
else.

If you are a P-51 fan you have a great website: mustangsmustangs.com. Does anyone know of a similar site for P-39s? I've been looking around the web and haven't found any really good P-39 sites which list things like the number of survivors, wreck sites, pictures, lend-lease, rebuilding, etc.

Looks like Warbird prop drive isn't going to come through with their reduction drive for an 80 CC motor and the torquemaster just won't fit right so after a long search Air Hobbies has a 5 CI inline engine that will just, just, just fit. Back to the drawing board and hope to start in about a year after my A-26 is done.

Thanks for the info Terry,
I did notice that most of the problems seem to be four year ago and older. I did talk to the guy at Air Hobbies today and he can custom make the engine to fit the P-39 I hope to build. No ugly cylinder head will be sticking out. I could go electric but just can't do it on a war bird. It needs some noise!.
If anyone has any other engine ideas I'd sure like to hear them. I need an engine between 80 - 100 CC with the top of the cylinder being no higher then 4.25" above the centerline of the crankshaft and need the front cylinder to be about five inches from the prop.

Wingspar,
I don't know if he'd have the solution to your dilemma but it may not hurt to ask.............go to Toni Clark's website, www.toni-clark.com , and see what he has available under the "Accessories" tab. As Toni offers Desert Aircraft engines, he would probably be able to make a reduction gear unit for a DA 85 that would work for your application. Just a thought. Know in advance that he is in Germany and it wouldn't be cheap but the qualty and his reputation are spot on.
