RE: YELLOW AT-6 TEXAN BUILD THREAD
Well after about two years of on and off building on this project, and with much appreciation for this build thread, I finally finished (minus a few minor finishing touches) my Yellow AT-6. It weighs in at a portly 33 pounds with a 3W-75 up front and set up for smoke. I have not checked the CG as of yet and am hoping that I will not have to add too much weight to the nose. I have five batteries in the nose and built it with all of the electronics as far forward as I could. I am very happy with the way it turned out and hope if flies as well as many have you have indicated. Thanks again for the great information on this thread! It will probably be another few months before it gets a maiden flight.

Very pretty scheme - nice job ! If you are holding any up elevator when the wheels touch, it will bounce back into the air. The trick is to release all up elevator the instant the wheels touch and it will stick like glue. The plane is a fantastic flyer and you will be very happy with this kit. The plane displays no tendency to nose over on take off or landing. Good luck on your maiden

Thanks compliment and advice. I copied a similar full size paint scheme that I found on the web and changed the original Marines markings to Navy. I have nothing against Marines, but I work for the Dept. of the Navy and am not looking to win any master scale events. r/Mark

No doubt! A 77 would pull that airplane with authority. And you will be able to throw the scale diameter prop as well. If I could afford to do it, in addition to the 77 I would put a solo to blade prop on

Some planes are just fun to fly. This is one of them . . . .

TreetoTree - I assume you have a Yellow T-6. I just received one (used) from my family ready to fly minus the receiver. Can you supply the balance point and the control throws you use.
Thanks for your help.
Sid
P.S. I just watched your video and now I would really like to know the details of your smoke system too.

RE: YELLOW AT-6 TEXAN BUILD THREAD
Hi Sid,
Had to go and take some measurements. It had been a while since I set it up.
CG = 6" from L.E. at the wing break (where the outer wing panels join the center section)
Using a digimatic CG gage - two index fingers! lol
Elevator = 2" up & down
Ailerons = 1.5" up & 1.0" down
Rudder = 2" left & right
All measurements at the control surface's widest point.
I run about -35 to -40% expo (Futaba) and seldom use full stick deflection I like the maneuvers slow and scale-like.
The smoke system is a Sullivan pump, 20 oz tank, and Robart oil. I have the pump flow on a switch and a proportional dial. Switch turns smoke on & off. Dial regulates flow when on. It is set to the lowest flow which is just above the pump quitting.
Like I said, this plane is just fun to fly. Had it out for a couple of flights this morning.
Hope you enjoy yours too. Thanks for the comment on the video.

tree2tree,
Thanks so much for taking the time to get me the measurements. I have wanted to build a large T-6 for a long time but other projects have taken all my time. I have 120 hours in full scale T-6 when I was in USAF pilot training in 1955. My last flight in the T-6 is in this video at time of 1:40. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rpfnBxKZTs

Rats! - your video is blocked! All I could see was:
"This video contains content from SME, BMG_Rights_Management, rumblefish, The Harry Fox Agency, Inc. (HFA), Warner Chappell, Sony ATV Publishing, INgrooves and AdShare MG for a Third Party, one or more of whom have blocked it in your country on copyright grounds."
Funny how this design lingers with you. There are sleeker and sexier warbirds, but I really enjoy the AT-6. It has such character. Of course it helps that it brings back memories. USAF training for you and for me, they were an active trainer in the South African Air Force well into the 70's. Not bad for a '30's design! As a youngster, I would watch (and hear!) those Harvards over Port Elizabeth. The WROOWW! of the props changing pitch is as clear to me now as it was then. I spent a long time walking the rows of them at Oshkosh last year!

I just tried my link above and it worked for me. I think I enjoyed the T-6 because every day flying it was a challange. We were the last class (56-N) to fly the T-6 in Air Force training, two weeks later they started in the T-34.
The model is more of a challange than a trike gear also.

RE: YELLOW AT-6 TEXAN BUILD THREAD
All - I'm in the middle of my YA AT-6 build. I'm pretty much done with the wings/center section (to the point of glassing start) so I'm starting to think ahead. Was wondering if anyone has seen or bought the YA wheel well (AT6121 = $32) and/or cockpit detail kit (AT6152 = $135) accessories? Was considering these upgrades but can't find a pic or details of what these exactly are. Are they worth the money? Thanks in advance for your help, John

I'm partial to dynamic balsa kits.
Brian has a sportsman kit for the AT-6.
I'm surprised that he doesn't show a full master series kit.
You may email him to check.

For wheel wells, I usually just use 1/32" thick ply and make my own.

RE: YELLOW AT-6 TEXAN BUILD THREAD
I have both in my Texan. Wheel wells are worth the money as they provide a nice clean well area with very little work. The cockpit kit is nice as well. Just the right amount of scale to it and very easy/fast to install. If you are looking for a more detailed scale kit (with a lot more work) then the DBalsa kits are the way to go.

Thanks for the info that you guys posted here regarding the CG and control throws. I had my maiden flight today. The plane weighs 34 lbs. and 2 oz. with a G-62 up front. Almost 4lbs. of lead was needed to balance it. It flew scale like and handled pretty well. I am trying to copy the TF 60 size scheme so I still have to do the stars and tail #. Just wanted to see how it handled today.
The 60 size (69" wingspan) looks much smaller to me now compared to the 101" Y/A.
I also want to share a short video of the take off and landing of the 4th flight (taken by my friend at FSA in Laurel,MD). It took me about 4-5 flights to figure out to avoid the unpleasant bounce(s) ontouchdown.

hi,
I'm in the process of bying a Traplet kit of the AT-6 94.25", in Swedish air force called SK16. I have a question to you all AT-6 builders. The wing looks like a one piece wing to me - is it possible to have it like a 3 piece wing? It's hard from the pictures to determine if it is a 3 piece or not! I have the Ziroli plan, on that one it looks like a one piece wing to me.......

OK, thanks!
have a look at www.traplet.co.uk and click on the models/plans, they have a lot of interesting wood packs.
