RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
I gave my P47 wing a lift the other day OMG!!! [X(] It is heavy! I'm hoping the fuz comes out light with all the systems in it. So far it looks like it will be so overall I'm hoping for AUW of 30 - 32lbs. Will have to be VERY careful with paint.

Pffft .......only 32 lbs .....a feather weight !
My Jug weighed it at 32/33 and flew perfectly and landed at walking pace so don't be to concerned
BTW just sold my Jug on ebay to a fella in FNQ .......freight to Gladstone will set him back $600 [X(]

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Ok some more progress
Fuz fitted out with electrics and first engine run done yesterday
The 3W80 is/was brand new (bought five years ago but too big to fit in the MD Spitfire) so it is very tight and will need a fews hours of running in ...........hmm that will impress the neighbours !!!
After some encouragement with a few squirts of "Start Yu *******" it fired and ran well ...........and wow is it loud!!!
The first half tank of fuel only saw 4000 rpm at full throttle swinging a 27/10 prop............I may have to down size to a 26/10 to get some more revs out of it.
Think I'll have to get the model down to the flying field for a day just to run the engine in due to the noise ............I don't want to irritate the neighbours to much.
BTW.............I put here on the scales again now fitted out and with a full tank of juice........tipped out at 48 lbs!!!........................and I still have to paint the beast [X(]
Stay tuned
cheers
Al.

Awesome there spitmad, really getting to the good part now.
Yes be light with the paint but dont be too concerned, my mates Seafury is just over 20kg (44lb or so?) and it flys very well. The first take off was like a trainer and it shocked us.[X(]
The landing was very stable and not too fast either.
Cheers,
Brad

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
yeah dont be worried about the weight, my Vailly Seafury is 42 lbs, has less wing then the Tempest too. Takes off easily on the G62, even though that is getting swapped for a GT80 twin.
It is very docile in the air and lands very nice
Mate where can I buy "Start Yu ****" from?

Thanks guys
Not too concerned with the weight as I was expecting 45+ pounds...........but still mindful of keeping it under 50!
Pete
"Start Ya B@ast@rd" is an ether based spray starter ........another brand is "Aerostart".........comes in an aerosol can and can be found at any auto store (Super Cheap, Bursons, Repco etc)
A must for starting gas engines that have been sitting for a while........no need for choke, a few squirts and you are away !

I find it works a treat, particularly for engines that have been sitting for a while, it sure beats pulling the choke and hand cranking the donk for ages trying to get fuel up.
Ran the engine up again yesterday and with some leaning out it is now pulling 5100 rpm with the 27/10 prop.

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
yeah I came to the same conclusion, a 27/10 was listed in the manual .............probably ok for a donk that is run in ........think I'll stick a 26/10- on it and see how that goes.
Any idea what sort of rev's an 80cc should pull ??

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
7k sounds too much for an 80???.[X(]...........I would have thought around 6k - 6200 max.
The 53cc in the Spitfire only pulls 5200 with a 22/10 three blade (over propped) and that flies with plenty of mumbo?...........the DL50 in the Byron pulls 6k with a 22/10 two blade and that goes like a scalded cat.
The manual recommends a 24/12, 26/12,26/10 or 27/10 .........so I'll try a 26/10 and see how that goes.

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Al,
I have a mate with a 3W75 in a CARF Mustang that spins a 26 x 10 at 5.5K. I am led to believe these (3W) develop most hp & tq at a lower RPM so anything from mid 5s to mid 6s should be about right,
cheers
Peter

Thanks guys
I will fit a 26/10 and am for mid 6k rpm..........the manual suggests 2- 3 hours for running in [X(].......no wonder it is so tight and struggling to pull over 5000 rpm.
Only one tank of fuel through it so far .........think I need to enoy the neighbours a bit more ...........man is this engine LOUD

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
G,day all, with my 3W85 i am getting 6200 with a 26X10 5400 with a 26X12 and 5700 with a 27X10,I am using the Chinese props from SDS and H/King and have had no problems with them.
I was using PT props.
The PT and the Chinese props all need balancing to some extent and the finish on the Chinese props are not as good as the PT props but so far so good no problems with the Chinese props.
The best torque range for my engine is around 6000 RPM i would not prop it to 7000.
I am also using a rexcell ignition as the replacement 3W ignition was a stupid price
Dave.

Hi Al i had my 3w in a 100inch 45 Pound TA152 and it flew it no problem that is until the regulator spat the dummy and killed the battery, so the engine now sits in a
T/F P47D 85 inch weighing 35 Pounds 6 flights so far so good but its early days yet and it go.s like a bat out of hell, needless to say i now do not use regulators i run 2 switches and 2 X 6.6v life batteries into a smart-fly, if i had that set up in the TA152 i think it would be still alive. This hobby takes no prisoner's some times you learn the hard way.

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
yep I agree..........I keep the electrics in my big aircraft simple, dual RX 3600 NiMh batteries into dual switches and straight into a Multiplex 12 channel RX, 2000 mah NiMh for the ignition with eith an RCat or smart fly ignition cut off.............No fancy power regs required as the Multiplex RX does all the power matching.
I think the more complexity is just adding more potential points of failure

Hi guys
Some more progress, I broke out the paint and started applying the invasion stripes to the wing, next will be the roundels ...........progress....Woohooo
I've had to fill a dent in the belly pan after forgeting to move a screwdriver that was on the work stand......20 kgs makes the balsa dent easily.........even with two layers of glass cloth......dohhhh[:'(]

ah crap you gotta hate that! [:'(]
agree about the electrics, I like simple. I use 2400 mA NiCd packs, into HD JR switches then straight to the Rx. Yup NiCd packs are dinosaurs but they love high current.
