I came across this build and have found it very interesting to say the least; I have a TF Gold Edition Corsair kit I'm going to start very soon. I have cut and paste the build instructions and can buy the majority of required building materials, but, PC Board were can I go to to purchase the material? Finally, I will also need a copy of the drawing to cut all the necessary parts for fabrication.

Question 1, I fly off of a grass field, will the tail retract assembly hold up on grass for take off and landing?

Question 2, What would be better to use a soddering iron or small butane welding torch during the build; I have both?

Question 3, What would the normal build time be for fab and construction, 10-20 Hr's?

To answer question #1: I have no idea! I have built one of these tail wheels and I'm still a long way from being done with the kit. My field has a dirt runway and it should handle it just fine.

Answer #2: Use a high quality soldering iron. At least 100 watts works well. I have had good luck using a 400 watt, you just have to be careful not to hold the iron on the material forever or it'll burn or delaminate. A torch isn't recommended.

Answer #3: I have found to really take your time and fit all the parts correctly you'll be looking at least 12 hours. With all the minor scale details added, it does take some time to complete everything. I'm sure there are guys who built it faster and that's fine for them. I prefer to take my time and have it look flawless.

As for where to buy the material, just do a google search for "two sided copper clad G-10" It will bring up many sites to find what you are looking for. I suggest you shop around since the price can vary a lot. I don't remember the site I ordered from, but I was able to get two sheets of 12"x12" board for about 9 bucks per sheet. You can build probably at least 4 or 5 tailwheels from that much material

Thanks for the answers to my questions, I have found the PC Board material, it's coming up from FL. The remaining items I should be able to find locally, wish I had a hobby shop which was local, its either order from the internet or drive one way 1 1/4 hour for hobby supplies.

RC guy, I just went to radio shack. They seemed to be 6x12 sheets and probably not far out on price (double laminated). I think the lack of hobby shops is due to us buying conveniently from large mail-order houses instead of going to the local hobby shop. I am lucky in Denver...I hope it holds out! I have found many of the prices on big ticket items to be similar or maybe 5% more expensive. I am willing to pay more for stocked items at the L.H.S just to support their well-being! When you need fuel, or fuel tubing, or field support equipment, or props, glow plugs, glue, wood stock, covering material, knife blades, miscelaneous hardware (that wheel collar that fell off somewhere)...or even a replacement kit for your favorite that just dug a hole (and you want to get back on the horse immiediately); you hope the L.H.S. is there! It is also what keeps our hobby accesible to the newcomer with questions..e.t.c.! If they have what you want in stock, don't undercut their price by a few dollars, buy it, and support them for when you need the immiediate stuff! I am not a hobby shop owner..I just appreciate them being around, and hopefully nearby.

I have built a few Tailwheels now and I only use a torche. Small crack type butane torche that many tool stores carry. But on the other hand I have had many years of welding and it just seems normal to me to use the torche. I guess it is what you are used to using.

Gents, I have started building my Corsair Tail retract. I have made two mods; one to the wheel bracket and the other to part B. I noticed a small amount of play after soldering so I added L bracket to provide better support; then I added some L bracket to part B to provide a abetter solder point. Please review my work and some feed back.

Hi Gents,

Well, after building my first prototype gear it turned out, well lets say bad. I took the entire gear apart and started all over again, this time I squared all parts and sanded to closer tolerances. Now I have completed my second 1/8th Corsair tail retract build here's a few pics of my retract. Next I will cleanup the retract and add some curves and then prime and paint.

Looks pretty good to me Brad...stick to it! Only you could really know how strong the soldering is (that's the important thing). You can sand and grind to your hearts content after that (wear a good mask). It'll look nice after you prime and paint it (having done all the filling). Stick with it.

Thanks for the compliments, one item I noticed was the aluminum shock piston and brass sleeve being soldered to part A there was no give during compression. As you all can see I used a 3/32nd brass tube; I drilled through the 7/32nd brass tube and the aluminum piston to insert the 3/32nd brass tube. For some reason when I drilled out part A for the 7/32nd brass tube it came out approximately 1/64th of an inch larger, giving the 7/32nd brass tube some play. That's when the idea came to mind to insert the 3/32nd brass tube and it worked and now I get approximately 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch travel on my shock strut. A plus on my side; I can take the shock strut apart for cleaning and spring replacement when needed. I have few more ideas to improve on the design, but that will come later.

Gents,

I'm finaly done with my 1/8 scale Corsair tail wheel retract, less tail hook. I have a few ideas to try and improve on the original design, this fall I'm going to be cutting and shapping a few new parts. The only thing I wish I had was a small lathe to work a few of the parts, but oh well maybe next year. Here are a few pictures, any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you join our 1/6th Corsair build? We are all in various stages, and some of us are slow or stalled out on building; others are pressing forward quickly. I have just concentrated on flying this summer for a change. I have had fun and cleaned oil off my sport model a few times. I am ready to build my TW, and you will be amongst Corsair fans. I think we are 1/6th Corsair blaa bitty blaa (search for 1 sixth corsair on RCU and you'll find us). -Eric

Here are the plans that I drew up. I have made some minor modifications to the original drawings that I created (such as a different way to make the shock absorber). You can use them as you wish. When you send them to print, be sure to select "no page scaling" so it will print correctly.

Thats a mighty nice tailwheel. I'm glad you enjoyed the building experience. I don't think I've ever worked so hard on a small part that largely won't be seen by most!

I have done some modifications to this design so it will fit in my EMS 75" ARF Corsair. I changed the method of retraction to make it more compact. Over the past 42 years I have built 3 Corsairs ( Royal, Brian Taylor 76", & Topflight 86") and sold them all. I do miss these Corsairs therefore I bought the ARF which I am improving by adding some detail and changing the flaps and tailwheel. I have added photos to show the tailwheel, my TopFlight Corsair, and some of the the modifications to my ARF.
