Dons stuff is just an outline. The details is up to you. I am enjoying this thread. It's his plane and he is paying the fair. I don't think there is anything wrong with strip planking as long as its a tight seam. This plane is going to weight 65 lb and will be a floater at that weight. It's better to make is strong. But paying attention to the weight while building. John

I've followed and enjoyed numerous threads here and prefer to keep to myself. But I have to say, Rack you are by far the biggest #@#hole on RCU. I don't care what self proclaimed RC guru you think you are, your nothing but a JERK!! I cannot believe the moderators haven't shut you off. Your the same playground bully that never grew up. Your unsolicited and"helpful" info is more degrading than anything else and I for one have been sick of it for some time. I don't know Barry from Adam but I can tell exactly who/what you are. Stop being yourself and leave him alone. It's his thread and I think he might have mentioned he's all set with your advice. Moderator!!! Truly Yours, Nick

Chad,

I just had a chance to look at your pictures of the oil coolers. I will need to add the louvers that are in front of mine but that is about it. I am going to try to find a thin walled brass or aluminum tube to make the carb intakes and then use fish netting to make the grill for it. The cross piece on the intake will be a piece of aluminum about 1/8" wide. Thanks for the pictures. Those are the best ones I've seen of the coolers so far. They look a lot like mine except there are only six louvers on the real Corsair and mine has eight.[X(]

Barry
Barry, you're quite welcome for the pictures and I'm glad they are of some usefulness to you. If you have not already, please take some time to look around the rest of that web site as it has detailed pics of nearly every part of the Corsair.

Rack, you are nothing but a troll.

Thanks Guy's I apprciate the comments. I myself don't know why the moderators haven't pulled his plug. Anyway I need to make the oil coolers 1/2" longer to make it per plans. I have one drawing from the front showing 6 1/4" long and the louvers being longer. Then the plan that is used to build over is shorter. Now I guess I'll just have to find a way to extend the coolers 1/2" and keep it looking scale. This is such a small detail that I don't know why I'm so worried about it but I am a perfectionist by nature. I know I'll make the carb intakes oblong because the are hidden on the top and bottom anyway so maybe I can add about 3/8" on each side and make that as close to the plan as possible. It will still be 1/8" shy of the 6 1/4" on the plan but it will be better than the 5 3/4" I have now.

Hey,

I've been following NCIS's posts from the TF Corsair through this one. I have not missed a post. I've learned a lot and have enjoyed every minute. I am not very verbal, just lurk and learn. I follow a number of other threads too.

NCIS, you the man! Keep it up, I'm rooting for you and read every post.

I am still working on my oil coolers but they are looking much better. I'll try to add the balsa block under the coolers tomorrow. Here is mine and the real thing. It's not perfect but getting better every day.

I've gone as far as I can with my oil coolers until I sheet the top of the wing so I set it to the side on one of my staging table for completed parts. I need to see after it's sanded to it's final shape if I need to lower the coolers. They are where the plan says but I'm not sure. Anyway here it is at my stopping point. I also dug out my Dynamic Balsa custom interior kit from Brian and took some pictures. The first few are the seat frame. Then on to the next thing at hand. I am putting the last hinge blocks in the left outer wing tip panel and then I'll sheet both of the tops.

Now it's time for the boring part. Edge gluing balsa sheets for the wing sheeting. I glued in the wing tip panels wing tube sleeves yesterday and used Gorilla Glue. It is messy stuff and I hate it but I'm sure it will never come apart. That stuff is like expand-a-foam. I hope to start sheeting tomorrow.

you know guys, and i really hate to do this but bringing back the oil cooler thing, the design and lay out changed on each model of the f4u, they also changed it durning prodution of that said model as well. one f4u-1d might have 40* oil flaps while the next off the line was changed to 45* oil flaps. you guys bashing each others hard work is uncalled for. new builders, long time builders, i dont care what you are you will NEVER bring rc model to a full scale look. pictures are to help with the build not a judgeing tool for those that think they know everything. Im a real pilot, and i fly out of 82J pensacola FL., i do a lot of flying in a J-3 and a 182, i know both those aircraft inside an out but i would NEVER be able to bring a model of one to a true full scale look. second, a mod is a mod, if its not on the plans then it is a mod point blank. i have built a LOT of models, two weeks is a VERY short time to build a model in, not saying it cant or hasnt been done, im just saying its a short time to do so. so please keep it nice. NCIS dude you model is coming along very well. one tip, its easier to pic a BU num of an aircraft and build off of that aircraft then it is to build off a aircraft design. each pilot would have made some type of feild mod to his aircraft during WWII making each aircraft different. i have seen pics of my grandfathers F4u-1A with the oil flaps on the left side of his aircraft riped out becouse of damage to the wing that didnt allow good airflow through the oil coolers. i have seen pics of F4us with side view mirrors. so point being, keep building your heart out man and keep up the good work.

if you have ever gone to a scale masters top gun event you would change you mind, they are exact scale reproductions of a particular airplane right down to the last rivot thats why they sell for 15 to twenty thousand when they are flown out, any field modifications that are well documented can help to increase the score, idont build the entire airplane to this standard but i do pic a n number and try to give a representation that would alow my aircraft to compeat in a lesser class

braydand,

I have a Corsair that I'm reproducing as close as I can. I also am a full scale pilot and own a Piper PA-28-140 for airport hoppin and just flying around for fun. Once in a while I'll take a trip but not to often with the av gas fuel price being what it is. My N number is N15592. Here's the Corsair I'm trying to copy. The problem is that I don't have any frontal views. The last picture is my reproduction of Lt. Ike Kepford's Corsair. It was built starting with a TF 1/8 scale kit.

Here is a quartering front view from airliners.net. I was unable to find any other front views on the net but I may have some among my various full scale magazines. Let me know if you'd like me to have a look.

Rack,

What is his number, I don't know him? PM me and let me know. I need the pictures.

Chad,

Anything you can get your hands on I would appreciate. I ran my coragated tubing for running my servo, air lines, and light wires through. I also got the top of one wing tip panel glued and drying.

Thanks guy's,

Thanks Chad,

That is one I needed very badly and didn't have. I hope rack comes up with the phone number to that guy so I can call him and buy more shots of this baby. I love this plane.

Gibbs

PS: I got the top of the other wing tip panel glued and waiting to dry. Then I can start on the top of the center section.

I ran my pull wires in the center section so I can sheet the top of it. I also finished sheeting the top of the wing tip panels. I still need to run the coragated tubing in them but then I can run the wires. Where the tips and the center section wires need to be connected I'm going to build a box on the center section so the wires will have a nice place to be out of the way. I decided I didn't like my oil coolers so I'm cutting them out and starting over to make them more 3-D. Heres what they looked like.

Barry,
The oil cooler intake looks great. Wing tips too.
