Default SHOW YOUR DETAILED ARF WARBIRDS

I wanted to see pics. of your detailed ARF warbirds, show the photos of any warbird that has been modified or refinished to make it look more realistic. If you can also let everyone know what kit or manufacturer it was.
This is what I did to a CMP P-26 unfortunatelly it was partially destroyed in a house fire.

sorry for the quality of this pictures but I just scaned them.

The is the first RC plane we aluminum plated with our seamless plating process and added all the details like rivets and custom paint. It has a good home in the mid west.

Default RE: SHOW YOUR DETAILED ARF WARBIRDS

Hangar 9 Corsair ARF:

1) removed all of original covering, recovered outer wings and tail surfaces with CoveRite flat gray covering, 'glassed fuselage and wing center section with 1/2 oz/ sq yd 'glass cloth/ MiniWax water based varnish (multiple layers on forward fuselage and wing center section), then painted with custom Behr (from Lowes) exterior semi-gloss house paints, used Top Flite 'red box' Corsair decals and some custom decals. I created the Jolly Rogers emblems with Testors decal paper and my printer.

2) Installed Top Flite Corsair cowl, after adding (notching) cowl flap lines and mounting straps. Hangar 9 cowl is oversize/ not scale. Top Flite one looks MUCH better.

3) rounded the forward most part of the fuselage, so that the scale look AND good motor cooling can be achieved. See where the cowl flaps end and the fuselage begins.

4) Installed Top Flite Corsair canopy (more scale authentic than the H-9 version for an F4U-1A)

5) Installed fake exhaust stacks made from painted plastic tubing.

6) Installed fake machine gun openings in wings (fabricated by me from Mattle Vaccu-Form)

7) cut out notch in tail underside to simulate where the arrester hook shows (on carrier based Corsair). Since this is a land based one, the 'tailhook' has been removed.

8) painted the AXI 4130/16 (electric motor) same color as dummy radial, so that the motor blends in and actually appears to be the engine case of the dummy radial.

9) Installed flexible plastic antenna mast, AND routed receiver antenna wire in scale location (exits just aft of cockpit, goes to top of rudder).

10) almost forgot: I modified wing center section so that is (A) shorter/ closer to true 1/8 scale, AND (B) it does not have the 'step' where it exits the fuselage. Gives it a MUCH more natural Corsair look.

I COULD have done something with the wing root oil coolers, but I wanted to leave a subtle clue or 2 that this is actually a Hangar 9 Corsair.

The scheme is that of U.S. Navy ace Lt Streig, from VF-17/ Jolly Rogers Squadron.

This plane is now ready to enter it's 4th flying season, but it has sustained a few bruises and rashes. I am considering re-finishing it as an F4U-1 ('birdcage canopy'): what do you think? Leave as is and do the birdcage on a later Corsair, or re-do this one?

I think it looks great like that but I have always liked the birdcage canopy better, wouldn't you have to reshape the fuselage aft of the canopy if you do the birdcage version?

Here is some pics of my h-9 corsair kit bash all done with superior tips per Luke of Zollner Models and his old Royal corsair thread. I made a working bird cage canopy, installed flaps, airfoiled the tail group, and glassed it. The plane was stolen from my garage a few years ago but retrieved 8 months after the theft with the help of Corsair Jock who noticed it was on an auction site soon after I finished building it. This plane has been on hold after the theft because of other projects but will be back in the air this spring with new Sierra gear and that flawless Zollner interior cockpit.

not as nice as some of the other mods but here is my H-9 Mustang added Tony Howard scale exhausts(I will be using them on my Top Flight P-51C build as well)and placed the tail wheel in its proper location,as well as some sticker rearangement,I also did some cockpit work,a little painting,I will probably do more when its time to recover it.

Here is a couple of mine. First CMP Hellcat glassed, sliding canopy, panel lines, raised rivots, cut 6" out of the center to make the wingspan scale to the fuse. Luke Zollner canopy, drop tank, gear doors, dummy radial. @nd is my TF giant ARF that is glassed, panel lines, Aerotech canopy, working doors. Both are everyday fliers and both were fun projects that didn't take a lot of time but I think came out nice. Shows you what can happen with a bit of imagination.

KMP ME 109 was fun to bash. Had to do a cockpit, stick some retracts from Lenny Shindin in the wing, Dash was a product of too many cups of coffee one afternoon and some gages I had lying around. Figured you could not really see the dash if the canopy was not able to open, then you gotta have a pilot, some brass tube for machine guns, thin sheet metal for strut covers, flatten one side of the wheel well openings, they come round but they are actual flat on one side, at least by the pictures I had. Exhaust had weld beads added, The wheels that came with it were not so cool, painted the hubs black and rounded off the tires on a belt sander and cut grooves in the tires like the german rubber had on them, again just looking at some photos I had from a book.

Default RE: SHOW YOUR DETAILED ARF WARBIRDS

The ME 109 above this post and this Top flight P-51 are electric conversions. On this P-51 I let a guy put the markings on and now I am removing them and putting them on correctly. Sierra Giant scale retracts and a cockpit is about all this one got. Here is a clip of it flying too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWs8ZfS7xbg
