Default VQ Hawker Hurricane .60 Build Thread

As it appears that there are currently no detailed build threads on the VQ Hawker Hurricane .60 I thought I would create one for those who are considering purchasing this airplane. I was able to find a good thread that focuses primarily on electric conversions of the model, but I thought I'd go into a little more detail here with the focus on a glow power setup. Here is a link to the above mentioned thread:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=784797

Here is a link to the Hurricane on the VQ webpage:

Well, here we go. I thought I'd take some detailed shots of the unbuilt, unmodified kit contents so prospective buyers have a good idea of what they are getting, and what they are getting into. The kit comes in one box, and everything is covered in plastic and well packed. I am pleased to report that none of the parts displayed any signs of visible damage. As you can see, mine is what VQ calls the Desert Camo version, not the Blue/Grey Royal Navy Sea Hurricane model. More on this in a moment.

Default RE: VQ Hawker Hurricane .60 Build Thread

If I had done a little research before I purchased the model (I spotted it in the LHS and picked it up on the spur of the moment) I would have waited and found the blue/grey Sea Hurricane model as I do not believe the black/tan Desert Camo scheme has an historical basis. It seems to have the same markings (including Royal Navy) as the Sea Hurricane, including the squadron and aircraft numbers, which doesn't seem like it could be accurate. I have read on other threads, and received a few responses to my posts, that the Desert Camo version is accurate and based on one at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. However, my searches have failed to find any pictures of the Duxford hurricanes painted in this scheme. I can only find these in the tan/tan desert scheme, the blue/grey sea hurricane, an unusual one that is black with a red spinner and nose (note: turns out this scheme belongs to the planes of RAF Night Squadron 87), and the Battle of Britain green/brown. If you want an historically accurate version, you might want to get the Sea Hurricane version.

By the way, I'd love to be corrected on this point! If anyone has any information on or photos of a black/tan desert camo Hurricane I'd love to hear about it. If not, perhaps a recovering or new paint job is in order. I really like the tan/tan Desert Rat Tank Buster Hurricane in photos below, and the squadron letters (JV) are my initials Anyway, act is haste, repent in leisure as they say. Now on to the kit contents.

Default RE: VQ Hawker Hurricane .60 Build Thread

First things first. There are three plastic bags in the box. The first contains the manual, extra patches for the covering, and a few detail stickers. The covering on the model is the expected type for a VQ, preprinted with graphics, panel lines, etc. Some have called it "shelf paper" and report that the adhesive used fails when fuel slips under the seams. As others have observed, it appears to be heavy and fairly durable. As with most coverings, some find it wrinkles like a prune, others say it stays tight as a drum. Well, if it remains on the model, we'll see. According to VQ it is "vinyl" with an adhesive backing. A peak at the back of the patches provided reveals it may have mysterious origins deep in the rain forest Could this be a candidate for recovering? They basically have the construction correct, with the metal portions of the aircraft sheeted and the fabric covered rear fuse with stringers, so something nice could probably be done. Perhaps not be me, however!

The second bag contains the various plastic parts, the canopy, and supplied pilot bust. The canopy is fairly basic and light weight. Debate rages as to it's historical accuracy, but it doesn't look that bad to me.

The final bag contains the fuel tank and misc. parts and hardware.

Default RE: VQ Hawker Hurricane .60 Build Thread

The cowl is fiberglass and painted to match the covering which it does pretty well. It seems to be well constructed. However, it is fairly small for a .60 sized model. For example, I was also looking at the H9 P-40 at the same time and the cowl on that model was significantly larger. I've added several pics of the cowl so you can contemplate how your engine selection might be accommodated. A two blade spinner is included. Research has revealed that there were some early Hurricanes that sported a two blade wooden, fixed pitch propeller, but of course the model cries out for a three blade prop. The spinner included with my kit was red however, not yellow like the one on the box.

Here's the fuse. I've taken some detail shots of the push rod exits and Royal Navy nomenclature. I've also included some shots of the engine box area so you can see what the options would be for mounting your power system.

Here are some shots of the underside/inside of the fuse. You can see the pre-installed pushrod tubes, tank area, and rear fuse stringer construction.

The wing is composed of three sections, with a large center section which contains the retracts and two outer panels. Here is the top side of the wing. As with the tail group, all surfaces appear to be pre-hinged. The wing has provision for the navigation lights found on the Sea Hurricane currently flying at Duxford.

Default RE: VQ Hawker Hurricane .60 Build Thread

Last but not least, fixed gear are included with the ARF. VQ does provide mechanical retracts and struts. DON'T PURCHASE THE VQ HURRICANE .60 STRUTS. They are not correct and will not fit. These struts have a u-bend which the Hurricane does not have. They are actually for the VQ P-51 I believe, and have been mislabeled and distributed in the US as Hurricane .60 struts. Apparently, if you peal back the Hurricane label you'll see the one for the P-51! The VQ website does list the correct straight leg struts, but they are listed as out of stock.

My research on other threads has not revealed any struts that fit from other companies. I'll have to do some additional checking on this. There is also a fellow in my area that makes custom retracts, so who knows. Of course, some say the VQ retracts hold up fine if you know how to land, others report they did not survive the ride to the field in the back of the car , so who knows. Some have replaced them with $300 air retract systems, but I don't think I'll be spending that kind of dough on a $219 ARF. Different strokes for different folks. I'm going to consult with an experienced friend (yes, that means you Carl) and see what he thinks before I make any decisions in this area.

Well, I guess that's the unveiling. I hope it helps if you are considering purchasing this bird. This is my first build thread, so I hope the level of detail is OK. Let me know what you think. This is also my first ARF warbird, and first ARF with retracts and flaps, so there should be lots of learning along the way. Fortunately, I've got a few experienced friends to help out when things get sticky. Now to make some decisions and begin assembly...stay tuned...same bat time, same bat channel...

Good Luck

Thanks for the interest in the build. I agree with you about the covering. The more I look at it, the more I kind of go back and forth on the preprinted graphics. Of course, the panel lines are overdone and a bit garish, but they don't look too bad from a distance, particularly on the lighter parts of the plane. I kind of wish they had just concentrated on replicating a scale desert scheme and left off most of the paneling, but you can't have everything! It does seem like it would make a nice project for someone with the right skills to glass the sheeted parts and cover the fabric parts with coverite or something like it, then paint the whole thing a nice, scale scheme. I know it would add weight (I guess, although the covering does seem quite heavy), but you'd probably end up with something much nicer looking that would weigh about what a TF warbird weighs. Unfortunately, I've never done such a covering job, so I'm probably not the man to do it.

Zeno

I'm glad the pics proved helpful. It really does seem like a pretty nice ARF and as I don't think there are any other Hurricane alternatives in this size range, someone who likes the Hurricane could build it stock or use it as the basis for a more scale project and either way end up with a nice, unique plane that stands out from the Mustangs, Spits, Jugs, Wildcats, and Zeros. Of course nothing against those planes. In fact, I'm thinking after the Hawker it might be nice if it had a Spitfire for a stablemate.

- Total length of the struts is 6.00" from top to center of axle.
- 1/2" Shock travel
