Default 26% Scale Fairchild PT-19 Trainer Wendel Hostetler Plans Build

OK, Here we go, this will be my first build, other than the ARF that i put together, my kit has arrived from PKC, it looks like everything is there, i know im supposed to inventory but without someing in writing, im not sure whats supposed to be there or not, guess ill find out as the days pass by. The Cowl is here also, as well as the G62. To be honest I'm a bit overwelmed but a friend said thats normal for a first timer, I will actually be starting the build Sunday night, i will be taking many many pictures of each and every step that i do, i havnt gotten any hardware as of yet, only because im not sure what hardware that im gonna need, thats where all you pros come into play, i will be asking many questions and asking for complete honsety in your opinion of how you would put this baby together. So on with the questons, after looking at my photos what would you start to build first?
Here are the first of many pics

Looking forward to the build.

Don't forget to post this over at RC Scale Builder (if you haven't already) as I know this will be a big hit over there.

ok, i went to RC Scale Builder but i cant seem to find where you reg,
On to the questions:
in my plans the engine calls for a Q-50 Quadra, however I'm using the G-62, how do i figure out what distance i need to move the firewall, in the plans there's a dotted line showing the q-50 to scale,
see fig.1 i removed the dotted line for that engine, see fig.2
would anyone have a dotted line rep. of the G-62 to scale so i can super-impose it to my plans so might might be able to get a correct measurement?
Is there an eaiser way to do this?
I know its kinda in the future at this point but its a question i see looking at the plans.
thanks

ok, a friend suggested that i go ahead and start building the center section of the wing first, so thast what im going to try to do, the hostetler plans do not come with build instructions. the plans have only the right wing, in the picture below i think i have the center section highlited
Question: Is this part highlited the center section and on the left side of the center section there is a double dotted line, is that to let me know that theres two pieces? center and right?

as of 30 minutes ago, i put the clock on this build, it took me running to my local hobby shop with plans and parts in question in hand, I have half of the front spar box and rear spar box glued, after the glue is set i will do a very light sanding and fit the spar wedges into place and use the bass wood spar piece as a template to position the wedges, if anyone knows an easier way please let me know, im all about working smarter not harder.
The first photo is the front spar box:

the second photo is the rear spar box

What is a good drying time for elmers wood glue to dry when placed in 90+ degree sunlight? dont wanna work too fast but dont wanna be moving too too slow either, again, thanks in advanced for any and all help.

Hi Dino,
You're absolutely spot on so far. Well done as I know your first plan build does seem a bit daunting, I know mine did.

I can't remember if Hostetler suggests it on the plan , but after I got the ribs and the leading and trailing edges built up on the spar boxes I wrapped the spar boxes, between each rib, with glass cloth and fibreglass resin. This is obviously before you sheet it in.

I also did the same for the spar boxes in the outer wing panels.

I've put my PT19 through some fairly serious aerobatics and so far no probs and it does make for a very strong wing ,when complete.

As I said before, if you need any help just ask

Good luck

Colin

hey Colin, one thing I'm kinda leary about is the spar plugs, did you glue the one half of the front spar box to the ribs before you closed it? I think thast what im going to have to do so when i build the wings and glue the spar plug to W8 i can fit it to the box with the wedges, can you tell me exactly how you did it? thanks

ok, until i here back from Colin, this is what i have so far for the middle portion of the wing, because i dont trust my building skills and im gonna use a G62 im gonna add small strips of glass at the joint from the ribs to the front spar box, the plans call the glass the spar box anyways so i dont think the weight is gonna be a problem:
and a bit of an overhead shot
the tail spar box hasnt called for any gluing yet so the ribs are just hanging on it. guess that brindge isnt far away

Dino,
If I remember correctly, I made sure that the wing joiners fitted the spar boxes ok by adjusting the wedges to fit the wing joiners. I then glued on the front half of the main spar box. Try and make sure that no surplus glue oozes out into the spar box. Before the glue dries, try pushing the wing joiners into the boxes ( While they are clamped together) This should clear out any glue before it hardens.
I then added the front sections of the main wing ribs to the front spar box. I then wrapped the spar boxes with cloth and resin. Now you mention it I cut the glass cloth slightly too big in width. When this was applied with the resin, the cloth formed a fillet between the spar box and the rib.

It didn't look pretty, but when it's all sheeted over you don't see it and it makes the wing very strong.

I also added extra cloth and resin to the ribs that support the undercarriage blocks.

Don't worry too much about a little bit of extra weight here, as this is the part that takes all the landing and flying stresses.

Dino,

It's looking real good and seems as if you have some builders with previous knowledge building this plane. Listen to them and you can't go wrong. But I'll always just be a phone call away if you need to know something.

Great work,

Barry

Thanks Barry, i appriciate it. went flying today had a great time, but on my last landing, it went smooth but as it slowed down it slowly drifted left and the left wing smashed into a car muffler, after replacing 3 leading edge ribs and re-gluing the leading edge and recovering, im going back out this afternoon. cant get enough of this stuff! will work on the wing some more tonight. that wing tip has me scratching my head i tell ya.

Default RE: 26% Scale Fairchild PT-19 Trainer Wendel Hostetler Plans Build

below is a picture of the center section of the PT-19 that i am trying to build, the operative word is TRYING, anyways take a peek and then read my question:

right in front of the forward spar box to the left and to the right you will see (hopefully) that i am to install a block of wood for the landing gear after i build up a box with some glass, however that plan is for the robart struts, i myself am going with the Siierra Giants that i purchased, i must say; THEY LOOK SO REAL! they are beautiful, now these struts already come with a shapped block of wood attached. and the size of it is actually the same size as the 6 rib, the space between, and the 5 rib. now for the question:

do i remove these two leading edge ribs and just use the blocks? and if so how in the world do i make that area strong enough to support these babies, my landings arnt the smoothest. LOL.

Dino,
I made my own blocks and struts so I can't help here exactly. If it were me I would trim the blocks to fit perfectly between ribs 5 & 6. Just take an 1/8" of each end.

Just make sure that the glue joint between the blocks and the main spar box and the ribs is a good one.

As I said I glassed these two pieces together after glueing. You'll find that the centre becomes very strong after it is all sheeted in.

Carry on the good work.

how did you glass it? didnt the glass over the spar box raise the sheeting up? also what im afarid of doing is not shaving the blocks equally the same causeing the landing gear to become a bit unbalanced, do you think that lilk difference will matter?
help me out with your glassing teq. if you dont mind, thanks

I think what I probably did was to remove about a 1/32" from the spar box top and bottom, between ribs 5 & 6 , to allow for the thickness of glass cloth.

I know I wrapped glass cloth around the spar box and onto the undercarriage blocks. You'll find that you can line up each block easily with the other if you temporarily fit the oleo to it and then just eye it through.
