After the long but enjoyable build I have some video.. I hope you like it.. I had to build it after flying a GP electric one all last summer. Also two friends of mine fly the Balsa USA Nieuport 17 1/4 and the DR1 1/4. Last night we even had all three up at the same time...for the first time... Unfortunately no video...The nieuport 17 had his first deadstick..so It looks like two fokkers was more than he could handle

The DVII looks good. I like the engine detail.

You should come down to Joe Nall in 09. We have a large gathering of WW1 flyers attending.

Here is a pic of us last year. I have the Pup and the DVI.

That is a great lineup of planes in your picture. I talked to the guys from Balsa USA at the Owatonna warbird fly this year..They mentioned having 20, 1/4 and larger WW1 birds up at the same time..was that at the Joe Nall event ? Or the Ohio dawn patrol this year?

Thanks for the comments on my motor on the D7, it was alot of work..and by no means (100 % correct) but it sure does add to the character of the plane. It never quite looks the same in photographs, I do alot of detailing with light and dark colors, and the white always seems to be exagerated in pics..

Very nice Foodstick. I'll be putting together my Hanger 9 Fokker D-7 next week. I believe it's going to be my last ARF. I got some covering instruction and practice in and I think I'm ready for a kit. I'm thinking about the Balsa USA Eindecker or the Fokker Dr-1 for my winter project. My hobby shop has both of the kits sitting on the shelf, been there for about a year. I hope my first kit looks as good as yours. [8D]

I don't know why I always picture you as a kit builder from way back , ha ha Seriously the key to building is having the room to set it aside.. When you are in the mood nothing can stop you from building though, it can be an addiction.. I am pretty lucky in that when I want to build it is more fun than flying...I flew my new D7 several hours a day in my head while building it ...It definately is a much more intense nervousness test flying a kit built plane.. and so satisfying once you realized you did everything right..

He was possibly talking about our Ohio Dawn Patrol. We had 14 1/3 scale WW1 and about 25 1/4 scale or smaller aircraft. The picture was at Joe Nall and I counted a little less than 20 in total at Nall. The ODP had 30 something pilots for the first year, not bad. I have already got many emails and PM from people saying they are sorry they missed it and will be there next year. The new expectation for 09 is about 50 pilots and about 70 aircraft. We want to make ODP something WWI guys just can't miss.

Here are some pics of this year

WOW! Besides the great pictures, that field looks VERY WW1 friendly lots of smooth easy rolling grass to land on..After a couple learning incidents with SLIGHTLY taller grass then the runway, I can appreciate a nice trimmed field...

I'm getting VERY close to finishing the D.VII (also a 1/4 scale from BUSA). I should be covering it this upcoming long weekend.

THen I need to decide if I am going to build my 1/4 Pup or the 1/3rd scale M.S A-1.

I do remember you were following some of the same build threads that I was, can't wait to see yours painted up and in the air, I don't recall if you had decided on a certain paint scheme or not ?

Me too!!!!

About a month ago I was flying at a Airshow (Full Size Aircraft) up here near Fulton, NY. When I finally got the OK to fly that late noon... I felt that I needed Monster Truck Tires! [:@]

It took everything I had to keep the plane from nosing over when I taxied out. So I slamed the throttle forward with full flaps and got off the grass! About 200 people wanted to see my ( TOY ) [:@] airplane fly, and I didn't want to bumb out anyone by not flying.

When I landed, I swore I was about to vibrate my landing gear right off! I did make it all look good, but man... I don't want to fly there again. I definatly tightened some screws that evening when I got home.

Thats a sharp color scheme, It will look quite a bit different in the air at different angles. I'll be watching for some additional pics and video as you move through the process of finishing it..

Hello,
Wondering what covering you used on your D7? I love that color scheme, if you can let me know how many rolls etc. My kit is on its way from BUSA and would like to have some odds and ends worked out. I'm a WW1 junky have flown at Reinbeck a few times now w/ my Nieuport 17. Just finished my Spad XIII which will have its maiden flight once the weather breaks.

Thanks,
Ray.

Wonderful job on this. I love the service time you simulated on the heads and exhaust.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys ! Its been so long since I have seen this thread bumped up ..it caught me off guard !

Rc Ray I used super coverite, but any good fabric covering should work..I used some natural color on the D7, and then painted it by hand with acrylic hobby paints. Then I put a couple light coats of clear over the top...

I really like doing the aging and weathering on the planes anymore..It might not all be correct, but I sure love the used look on warplanes of any type.

The WWI gaggle was at the Warbirds Over Delaware, 2009 I believe there were 33 1/4 and 1/3 scale planes flying at once. 2010 there were only like 22 planes flying at once, still it was pretty cool.

At the Delaware event in 09, I was the first one up after the 20ft Gotha bomber, and the next to last to land. It was alot of fun with no mid airs on that gaggle. It looked like a big thermal in the field. We kind of took off Le mans style across the runway. It was a total of 33 planes, and that was because Paul LeTourneau organized it.
I had quite an adrenalin rush after that.

I will be going down to Joe Nall this year, and will be bringing my little Tri-plane by BUSA.

Actually in 2009 there were 37 WWI planes in the air, (3) third scales, the large Gotha, and the rest were 1/4 scale. It was a blast and a record not to have been broken yet. Last year was short by 10-15 aircraft, maybe this year 2011, ofcourse if the price of fuel keeps going up, I might not be able to make the 8 1/2hr. drive, but I hope so. I luv WOD...

Foodstick,

Awesome looking Fokker. Very inspirational and truly scale. I love your takeoffs and landings.

I'm rebuilding my Fokker D-7 for the WOD 2011. I had a crash in September requiring repair. On my sixth spin of the weekend it never recovered this time.
I flew in that big gagle of 37 in 2009 with Stuka Berry. Nothing but adrenalin rush after the first lap of shear terror!! To me, it felt like flying in a bumble bee swarm. As we all spaced out and found that the speeds were about the same, it became a real rush!!!

r,
Mike P.

Just thought I'd drop a recent picture in...

We are having a last minute WW1 fly tomorrow Saturday August 17th at our Elkhart field. Its straight east of Elkhart Iowa, or straight north of Bondurant Iowa. Its only 10 minutes North of Des Moines.. Anyone in the Central Iowa area wanting to bring a WW1 plane you are welcome to show up ! its just a fun fly, no plans or organization involved , hahaha
