Silver F4-U Corsairs?
Hi All: I'm doing some research for a friend for a possible future plane. Does anyone know of any Corsairs flown at any time in history by any countries that had a NMF (natural metal finish) paint scheme? Any pics or info would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
DaveGee

RE: Silver FR-U Corsairs?
Thanks, Steve. Those are some great pics. That might be a possibility, but I think he is probably thinking about a military paint scheme. It doesn't matter which country. I have seen some WWII planes that eventually went to smaller countries, some were painted in NMF. Not sure if any Corsairs were, though.
Thanks for your input, Steve. It might still be a possibility.

Hi Dave, if you do a search here on RCU you will find that Metalmorpheous asked this same question a few months back. I've done a considerable amount of looking and so far I've not seen any NMF Corsairs in the service of any country. In fact, I've only come across a couple that were NMF in civil hands. That certainly does not mean that they never existed but, if they did, documentation of them is very scarce. Good luck with it.

thanks, Chad. I hadn't seen any Corsairs in military paint schemes anywhere, but I thought I'd check for my friend. I"ll check some books at the hobby store before giving up.
BTW, we finally got the chance to test your lightweight drop tank last weekend at WOR on Fire Ball. It dropped off beautifully! I got a pic of it dropping away that I'll send you later when I get home to my computer next week. Absolutely no damage on landing, although it landed in a soft, plowed field. We plan on testing it at OEAF in late October. Hopefully it won't be damaged when it hits the desert hardpan. Hope you can make it!

RE: Silver F4-U Corsairs?
I have always liked doing military aircraft in color schemes other than the standard ones. A few years ago I came across an article on the El Salvador Soccer War that took place in the late 1960's. It had corsairs fighting corsairs. I have liked the silver scheme ever since. I built a 1/48 scale corsair in these colors in preparation for a rebuild of my trusty H9 corsair. The pictures show two of the most poular corsairs but there are others. The next pictures are of the plastic model and the last picture is my H9 corsair as it flies now. It will be redone this winter in the silver scheme. JC

JC, I could be wrong but it was my understanding that the FAS Corsair in your pics was actually painted light grey and was not NMF. I know of a good source of information for Latin American aviation history, maybe he can confirm or deny. Stay tuned...

RE: Silver F4-U Corsairs?
NZ5531 of the Royal New Zealand Airforce was an F4U-1D used as a trainer in 1945 that had an all natural metal finish with the dark blue anti-glare on the top of the front fuse and canopy frame. The faibric was painted either silver or white. There is a rendition of it in the book Chance Vought F4U Corsair vol. II. This is the Monographs No. 26 published by Kagero. You should be able to locate this book at AJ Press, (US distributor of these Polish publications) or Roll Models. Outside of the XF4U and some racing planes, it's the only documentaion I've come across for a natural metal Corsair.

Chad: I have at least one person who would like to purchase a tank for 1/6 scale P-47s. Let's discuss possibly marketing it via private email. Drop me a line sometime when you get a chance.

Looking closer at the rendition, the canopy frame is dark blue, but the anti-glare is black. If I had to decide, I would guess that the fabric is painted white, as well as the outline around the forward fuel tank compartment. This raises a question I have. Was the white outline around the tank paint, or was it tape to seal the gap around the tank compartment?

RE: Silver F4-U Corsairs?
Chad, I have read several different accounts of the FAS corsairs and there seems to be very little consistency. Some say they were gray, some say they natural. I don't know for sure. I happen to like it better natural. I also like the version that I found that has the Light blue and white cowl and rudder with yellow wing tips, canopy frame, and vertical fin with a black anti glare panel like the one on my avitar. I have a better picture somewhere. I also ran across a natural corsair in one of my books that was built up from parts and flown in the South Pacific. It was all natural with Stars and Bars. It had black unit markings. It was later painted all black. I will look for the picture and scan tomorrow. JC

RE: Silver F4-U Corsairs?
It seems that they were painted either silver or gray which makes sense being exposed to salt air. The second picture is the one that I thought was natural but turns out it was painted silver. JC
