P-47 PYLON RACER???
I am progressing on my TF GS P-47. First what a great kit to build. I am at the point where I need to decided on what it is to look like. I have seen so many beautifully done P-47, BUT I want something different. I have been to the Reno Air Races and loved every second. My only wish is that a P-47 would race (IT's MY FAVORITE PLANE). My mind is going crazy about the paint job. I want something cool like the 2008 Rare Bear paint job. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK. How should a P-47 look to go race in the Unlimited Gold class??

Nevermind I give up. I do care if it would be streamlined or competive. Close your eyes and picture that huge JUG on its wing tip pulling G's around a pylon. I see it in a Ferrari Red with yellow flames coming from out from the cowls flaps going to the tail.

RE: P-47 PYLON RACER???
I just checked my Raceplane Tech book, (Bearcats and Corsairs) and it shows a photo of a P-47 back in 1947. Bill Odom entered it in the Bendix race and it sprung a fuel leak just before the event. So there went the chance to race it! Checkerboard cowling and wing tanks, it would have been cool.

Here's a link to a shot of Odom's P-47. There may be more if you poke around this website.

RE: P-47 PYLON RACER???
THANK YOU FOR THE PICTURE YOU ARE THE MAN!!!! Now I just have to find out the colors. Looking at all thoes pictures breaks my heart. How mant P-39 and P-38 are left now??? My friend who is giving me my flight training had a chance to but a Corsair in the 60's for a woping 5000.00 in airworthy condition. I don't think you could even buy a tire for one for that price. I wonder if 40 years from now planes like the F-14 and many others will end up in the private sector. I doubt it but its nice to dream. I think the P-47 would have done just fine at RENO. The P-51 is a great plane but the P-47 was their first proveing itself in combat!

Brian, thanks for the find, that's a great site. Man to have lived 60 years ago with a big bank roll, the toys I'd have..
iflyg450, it will look great as a model of Bill Odom's plane,, PLEASE keep posting!! I'd love to see the finished plane.

Is this what you have in mind? Dick is building this 1/4 scale P47F with a laminar wing and enough go power to melt the paint off. Should be done early next year.
