Default Building the Sea Fury 1/4 from Jerry Bates

Hello guys,

here I want to start a building report of the Hawker Sea Fury 1/4 from Jerry Bates. It will be my first warbird, and I hope, to find here some support.
The first fitting of the ribs and spars brought a bit disillusion! The cutout of the front wing joiner tube wasn't in the right position, 3mm too much in the front.
You can see it on pic #1. But it wasn't so bad, I had to enlarge them for a 37mm tube. Here in Europe I can only buy tubes in metric system.
Pic #2 shows the horizontal stab with the slits for the hinges of the elevator.
Pic #3 shows the hinge plate, made of 2mm epoxy, with ball bearings glued in, axle will be a 4mm tube of carbone.

Bernie

PS: Please apologize my simple english ;-)

Hello BigBoy99, you will have quite a few small problems to sort out with this plan, there are inaccuracies all through.

The main thing to check at this stage is ALL the control surface hinges are in the wrong position so beware. The aileron hinge on the full size is on the top, on the plan they are on the bottom!

I am working on a hydraulic wing folding mechanism on mine at the moment; I can post some pics if you wish.

Hi Mick,

I have read your building report, wow, what a great work! I'm very impressed about your folding mechanism [sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]
To built somthing in my Sea Fury is an impossible thing, because of the weight limit of 25 kg here in Germany.
What I'm very interested is, how heavy is yours in the actual phase? I'm planing too, to install the Moki 250, and the Motor and the gears from sierra makes alone 10 kg's.

Regards
Bernie

The Sea Fury ailerons are definately top hinged...................e-mail me at [email protected] and I will send you some close up photos.

Here is my build thread on the Bates 1/4 scale model....also Moki 250 powered with Sierra gear.

These days I made the first elevaror, i would have it hinged by ball bearings, with a demountable axle.
The connection to the servo will be inside of the fuse, I hate these outlooking servoarms.
The axle is a 4mm carbone tube, at the one end is bonded with loctite a M3 thread, at the other end is a head of an allen screw bonded in.
By this way I have a 40cm long and very light screw.
The LE will be covered with balsa, to get the half-round form. Before this I have to epoxy in a guide tube. Without it it's a big fiddling, to mount the axle.
See self:

PS; If you find any Noetzelmans in Germany, tell them they have a long lost cousin here in America.

Hi Dave,

here in the german warbirdforum we have now a discussion about the strenght of the connectors of the elevator.
They are almost expirienced modelers, and say, these 5/32" piano wire is too soft and elastic, the elevator can flutter.
I think, I will replace it by this construction:

Hi Bernie, that's one of the reasons I cut my tailplane in half. The servos are fitted into the tail and short pushrods are fitted close to the fuselage where they can hardly be seen. The whole assembly is much more rigid. (I'll post some pics of my work soon).

m

by the way, if you need any pics of parts of the full size let me know.

On my build is used 3/16"wire with a brass control horn silver soldered to the wire and a wheel collar

Hi Mick,

I get up every morning at 5h o'clock, have to go to the work at 6h .....it's a hard life!
I'm very anxious to your pics of the cut of the fuse, may be I can realize it too at my Sea Fury.

Hi,

had a lttle progress, the connectors of the elevators are now a 10mm tube with hard solded horn,
with an additional hinge pont direct at the horn, here is the greatest force to the elevator.

Hi all,

here a little report of the works of the past few weeks. The stab is nearly ready, pre sanded and waits for
sheeting with fiber glas, but this later. The rudder is hinged like the elevators in small 4mm ball bearings.
It works very easily and play free. The last frame in the stab is built in composite from 5mm balsa end grain wood
sheeted by two layers of carbone. In the plan there is drawed only a balsa construction, and this is in my opinion too soft.
Here the pics :

Today I started with the fuse, front former F! is built in one part and also a composite construction, save 150 grams.
The box for mounting the Moki I dropped out, will make another construction, but later.

Hi,

today I made the two vertical longitudinal girders, made too from 5mm balsa-endgrain wood and two layers carbone 200g's
The origin plywood has 449g, the replacement is at 136g's!!! That saves 600g's weight!

Nice work Bernie ! Your build is supplying me a lot of great ideas for my Ziroli P-47 build that is just about to start.
Good luck

I sure hope you don't end up needing nose weight having gone to all this effort of saving wight in the front end.

Yes Phil,

me too, but consider, the Moki and the gear from Sierra together weights more than 10 kg's and is placed in the front third.
Saving weight in this area allow's me, to place weight thats anyhow necessary(RC, batterys etc.) in this area.

I've yet to see a 'giant' warbird of this size that doesn't need nose weight........the Fury has a comparativey short nose, but a VERY long & quite bulky rear fuselage.
