Sam, go to page 6 and look how I did it. You can go also to the
www.wyliewarbirds.com
website and look there for more pictures.
How I did it, I used a 0.375 inch rod and drilled a 0.102 hole in the center (lathe) I used this drill bit for the center location of the gun barrel.
You can use also a wood dowel – same principal. Next step was to create the walls. 0.5 inch PVC pipe was my choice. 0.5 inch is the inside diameter. You need to cut the pipe in the shape of the nose – at least pretty close. Then wrap some tape around your dowel until you have a tight fit for the 0.5 pipe. These two then you slide in to the corresponding holes in your nose. The fiberglass nose is clear enough to see the outlines of the pipe, mark the outline.
Now before you remove the nose cone you should drill two holes into the cone, one on the top and one on the bottom. The holes can be in the size of a toothpick – just use two of them to relocate the cone on the exact same place.
You can make 5 locators or make one locator and do it 5 times. Locator in, cone on, mark the outline, cone off – you get the picture.
For the 20mm gun you need more tape this will be you last chore on the marking.
Next step is cutting the cone, here I used the Dremel. After you got the holes cut you stick your walls into the holes with the cone in place. A little medium CA just hold the walls in place.
You need to tape the walls on the outside – you will have some gaps to fill with epoxy from the inside. Fill the gaps and this will secure the walls to the cone.
Now you are ready for sanding. Sand the PVC walls flush with your cone and fill little pin holes or imperfections with your favorite putty.
….and be happy.

Hey Greg, I’m ready for decals this weekend hehhehehehe (I wish)…
Serious – looks good, what decals are you using? I was talking to Jerry at Pro-Mark he will do my decals as rub-on, the insignias will be painted. I see him every year at the WBOR.
Post some pictures when it’s done…

Hey G-Pete thanks for the kind words and i will get some pics when it's done. I'm getting my dry transfers from cindy at WWW.aero-loft .com she'll have them done for me in about 2 1/2 weeks so it should be a little warmer here for me to spray the clear on the plane once i get the decals placed on it.

I looked into Aero-Loft before, but I was not so impressed with their website. For my taste the prices were a little steep. Anyhow, I like to see what I buy and a list of the single transfers need to be attached.
One example:
Picture N/A
A-4M Diamondbacks, 0024, Marines
Item No.40-2, Price $300.00
The customer has no idea what is this all about. I like to see the extra effort - THEN and only then I'm willing to spent the extra money. It is easier to turn away from a website like this...
BUT, this is just my opinion - Opinions vary...

G-Pete i've been dealing with Aero-loft for a few years now and find there prices are a little bit cheaper than jerrys prices are. But like you said everybody has there own opinion. cindy also did my p-47 and all that stuff was only $170.00. I'm doing this color scheme again and i think these are around the same price.

RE: G-Pete's Ziroli P-38J Lightning build
Last weekend I found a flaw in Nick’s drawing. When you build the horizontal stabilizer exactly to the plan the booms are (center) are 0.25 inch further apart in the rear then in the front.
The fiberglass booms have a little bulge going from a round shape to a flat shape. This let you attach the filler between the horizontal and the boom.
This bulge pushes the booms 0.125 inches on each side out. That’s a total of ¼ inch.
The correct measurement from center to center (front and rear) should be 35.25 inches. I build an assembly and measuring jig. There I noticed the difference; the horizontal would only fit without the fillers.
Pictures will follow shortly…

Yeah - everything is fine...I'm in building mode and work everyday on that bugger. All balsa is sheeted and primed with sanding sealer. Right now I work on the booms, the formers are in, the air tanks are in, the position lights are wired and the LED's are in. Tonight I start on the elevator and rudder servos the weekend is planned for the landing gear and firewalls.
...and if I have some time between, I will post some pictures.
I should put a live stream video camera in the garage and put that on a website. How about that?
