here some progress...
Hardwood blocks and brass inserts - this is better then blind nuts. They can not back out and they last longer. This is a different approach to attach the wings. Here are no dowels needed and the wing sits every time on the same location.

Horizontal stabilizer and elevator. Same like the wing, just smaller brass inserts. No small blind nuts in a 45pound airplane (at least not on the elevator stab).
I added also a shear web to the stab to beef that area a little up. This is the location where you hold the airplane during motor run-ups.

More shear-web on the outboard wing. First test fit for the booms and locate the connecting points. The booms will be not bolted from the top like the plans ask for. From the bottom so this model has no holes on the top.
Again used the brass inserts and the hardwood blocks shaped to the booms. Reinforcement of the leading edge in the location of the landing light. I plan to put lights in it.
bottom and front construction.

Balsa blocks for the canopy plug. Lots of carving and sanding. After the final fit, i added 1/2 inch balsa in front, back and bottom.

Front landing gear door. Slowly the nose gets shape. Gun openings finished - I had to check twice, they looked a little large. But is is scale...
The Radar Operator canopy plug is ready for forming.
My first test runs with scale ammo - yes, it is full scale .50 cal next to the scaled down version
Happy landing

Pete,
How would .22 shells compare to the brass tube you used. Just curious. Great idea.
Would you like to show what you have done at the April Austin warbird? Would love to get a close look at it. (FYI- Warbird is April 24 - 26)

Edwin
Edwin, the .22 are a little too large - they would not fit to the 4 1/5 scale machine guns displayed in the gun bay.
I doubt the April for an finishing month more like June/July. I will take my Beetle to Austin this year - this is an Eyecandy too...
......and the fast FW190 (I mean real fast!!)

I got some PM's about the red paint on the Canopy plug...why red? Well, this is high temp paint so the hot plastic do not stick on it.
Terry, I know better not to use her knives - even in Texas it is a tat to cold to sleep in the doghouse (If I had one..)
hahaha
Happy landings

BTW:
The gun barrels make progress too...

Pete it look great!!! I too thought that when I finished the gun ports that they looked over size but once you get the gun in the port it looks dead on. Very nice work.

The .50 cal. barrels are 3/8 aluminum bar stock, the 20mm cannon is 7/16 bar stock - machined in a lathe. Second picture is the beginning of the mold for the .50cal gun case
