Default Yellow Aircraft P-40 build

Ive taken the steps to start my 1st giant scale warbird build. Im ordering Yellow Aircraft P-40 and all accessories as a package deal and awaiting them to give me a price shipped.

Im very much excited about my 1st venture into building and scale detailing. Ive read 77Chickenhawk's build thread a few times as well as a few on 'groups and RCSCALEBUILDER. I have built and glassed a number of gas-powered wooden race boats so Im hoping my boat building skills will transfer over. What I dont know I banking on finding the answer in the forums.

Few questions off the bat...
I plan on using the Keleo exhaust which limits my engines to
3W 50
3W 75
DA 50
ZDZ 80

Which one is the middle of the road between weight and power? I want the lightest engine possible w/o being underpowered. Ive heard good things about the DA-50R, does it have the same exhaust location as the DA-50?
Are the YA retracts and tailwheel retract a good bet?

Wish me luck!
Matt

The DA- 50 will just fit if you rotate it slightly away from the muffler about 22 degrees. I had a Ziroli P-40 with a 3W-75 and it fit in the cowl completely. It weighed 36 pounds and flew very well. Use the Yellow retracts...They are designed for it. I would beef up the wing to tie it into plywood.

Based on your engine choices, I would go with the ZDZ 80. A TON of power and very light to boot. Don't forget about the scale size of your prop. Little motors like a DA-50 will not turn that size prop that you need.

I just ordered the plane and it shipped out today!
On second thought, I think I will steer away from the Zdz engine due to its price tag.
Ive heard a few times that the DA-50 will spin a 3 blade prop on the P-40...

It will, but not the right size. Your getting into the BIGGER warbirds now. A Yellow P-40 will cost you around 1800.00 to 2500.00 depending on your radio selection. A DA-50 will fly it nice, but it looks kind of strange to see a little bitty(20-10) three blade prop barely sticking out of a large spinner. I had a Beila 20-10(black) on my Yellow P-40 with a DA-50 also. If you are trying to keep the cost down, consider a DL-55 for $400. shipped to your door. Comes with a muffler too. Or maybe a Zenoa G-62 for $385.00 new.

Good luck with your build. I hope to see some pics as you build.

Rebel Flyer,
I agree, I do want to have a larger, more scale flying 3 blade. Will the 3W-75 turn a larger prop?
Since Im running the Keleo exhaust,
I have to stick to these engines
3W 50
3W 75
DA 50
ZDZ 80

so Im stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to saving a few hundred bucks on the motor and swinging a large diameter prop[:@]

Casino, thanks, I learned a bit from reading about your exhaust[8D]

That will work NICE! Keleo should have an exhaust for that combo...

Another question:
What about the DLE 55?
Rated at 5.5hp and the same exhaust placement and bolt pattern as the DA50R.

I had a nice surprise this afternoon. Brown Santa (the UPS man) paid me a visit early this year.
All I can say is wow, this bird is huge...

The DLE-55 is a fantastic engine. At least as much power as the DA-50 and much less expensive!
