Cool, the movie link gave it away.

Ok this one should take you a bit.

These two gentlemen are somewhere in my family tree, and both have the same last name as me.
One a Major who became a Colonel, the other was a General who retired as a Colonel, only to become a General.

Both are involved with a pair of WWII twins, both of the planes known for famous raid wins.
A pair of Medal of Honor recipients flew one of each, and both were used for more then their original design traits.

Who are the gentlemen and what are the two twins they are associated with?

Some tips?

Both planes in their various configurations were sometimes equipped with cannons and machine guns, sometimes 12 or more forward firing ones.

Pearl Harbor relates to both planes and Officers.

Wow, must be tougher then I thought.

Both planes in their various configurations were sometimes equipped with cannons and machine guns, sometimes 12 or more forward firing ones.

Pearl Harbor relates to both planes and Officers.

One left in disgrace only to be given an honor that no one else has been graced.

Both planes were used in multiple TOW's.

Story goes that one bird in axis hands became a hunter of of bombers and led to the use of a modified B-17 to end it's career.

Hi Guys,

I'm not trying to cut in line with all the great questions you're asking, but does anyone know why the F4U Corsair had the white tape markings on the nose, just ahead of the canopy? I see plenty of pictures of Corsairs with it. I don't know why it's there, but trying to find a reasonable answer! Once again, I'm not trying to cut in the game, just trying to find someone on this thread that might know the answer and help me out!

Thanks!

The fuel tanks leaked, so the mechanics would tape over the seams to try and stem the flow, which usually ran up over the canopy

Need some more help?

OK here's some more.

Both planes in their various configurations were sometimes equipped with cannons and machine guns, sometimes 12 or more forward firing ones.

Pearl Harbor relates to both planes and Officers.

One left in disgrace only to be given an honor that no one else has been graced. (Got that one BG Billy Mitchell)

Both planes were used in multiple TOW's.

Story goes that one bird in axis hands became a hunter of of bombers and led to the use of a modified B-17 to end it's career.

One had to leave early to make it's fame, the other got their right on time.

He showed the Navy they were wrong. (Ditto Billy, and a big clue to one of the birds)

And this one should give a lot of it away, Dick beat Tommy in the race in this one, and Jimmy showed em it could be done in the other one.

I can only guess one of the planes was a B-26 Martin Marauder and the other a P-38?
Jimmy doolittle showed them it was safe and could be flown on one engine.

Took you a bit, but you got it.!!!!!! You're up glasscock

Major then Colonel John Mitchell, General, then Colonel, the B General Billy Mitchell, The P38 that John used in the Yamamoto raid, and the B-25 "Mitchell"

Both planes in their various configurations were sometimes equipped with cannons and machine guns, sometimes 12 or more forward firing ones.

Both the 38 and 25 had strafer versions, the 38 carried up to 12 guns, 8 in the nose, and a pair each mounted on wing pods, the 25 carried up to 8 in the nose, 4 on the side pods, and a pair in the turrent. Also the 38 came with a 20mm cannon, and the 25 had quite a few variants equipped with cannone in the nose

Pearl Harbor relates to both planes and Officers.

Raid on Yamamoto(planned the attack on Pearl) by the 38's, led and planned by Major John Mitchell. The B-25 attack on Tokyo was a revenge raid for Pearl, and BG Billy foretold of an attack on Pearl

One left in disgrace only to be given an honor that no one else has been graced.

Billy again, court marshalled, and holds the honor of being the only person a plane (B-25) was named after.

Both planes were used in multiple TOW's.

Both saw action in every theater

Story goes that one bird in axis hands became a hunter of of bombers and led to the use of a modified B-17 to end it's career.

Italian captured P-38 was used to shoot down crippled bombers, and as the story goes a highly modified B-17 ended it's career. Still argued whether it happened or not.

One had to leave early to make it's fame, the other got their right on time.

Tokyo raiders had to leave early when spotted by a Japanese fishing boat, the 38's showed up right on time to catch Yamamoto's flight

He showed the Navy they were wrong.

Billy showed the future was in air power by showing up the Navy by sinking their battleships, which they thought were the future of war.

And this one should give a lot of it away, Dick beat Tommy in the race in this one, and Jimmy showed em it could be done in the other one.

Dick Bong beat out Tommy McGuire in the ace race in the Pacific, Jimmy Dolittle showed a B-25 could take off from a carrier and bomb Tokyo

Okay! Here's one...

The Navy wanted a fast flying boat to do many tasks. First flight of prototype took off from the Chesapeake Bay. One of the prototypes broke the sound barrier in a dive. Less than 30 were built. Contract cancelled due to over budget and competed with aircraft carrier dollars. What is the aircraft?

Not what I was looking for, but good guess...the SeaDart has been documented to break Mach 1 in a shallow dive.
The plane I'm looking for has:
-a crew of five
-T-tail configuration

Good job Tenacious! The Martin P6M SeaMaster was powered by four Allison turbojet engines and was pressurized.

Next question...

Next question...

One clue could have been: "It was about the ugliest airplane ever built."

Actually I thought it was a functionally beautiful airplane, the same description I use to describe an A-10. OK heres one for you guys. I am curently restoring the 4th one of these for static display. This one had been partially disassembled by a couple drunks who the put it in the back of a truck. Well somehow it fell out of the truck and rolled down the highway. Then it sat out in the rain for a bit. Since then it has been sandblasted to get it ready for static restoration. Its inverted sitting in my carport.
The engine is was built in its original country and was built under liscense in this country.
Good Luck!

Good job! This is one of the earlier ones built by Rolls Royce. This one is an early one used in the Hurricane, a bit lighter and different than was used in the Spitfire and Mustang. The Packard motor car company built the Merlins under liscense in the USA. Anyone guess what company cast the blocks for Packard Merlins?
