Sorry, all the guesses are incorrect so far.

What aircraft am I:

1. I was designed to meet the requirements of another nation.
2. However my final specifications were established in part by my own military.
3. My designer is rather famous.
4. I was used for ejection seat experiments.
5. I was designed before my country entered WWII.
6. The prototype had several changes made after review, one being the placement of the main guns.
7. One of my parts suppliers took on much of my design work when resources were diverted to another aircraft.
8. I am of all metal construction.
9. I have two engines.
10. I have eight guns, the smallest being .50 cal

The ejection set experiments and lots of big guns got me on the right track...

....................................

What aircraft:

1) it was designed to a requirement for a fighter that could intercept fast bombers at high altitudes
2) it also had to be able to operate from small runways, and be easy to maintain
3) about 600 were built. A slightly larger number is sometimes quoted but that seems to include used airframes that were rebuilt for export

SAAB 39 Gripen (JAS) would fit most of the clues but I am pretty sure more than 200 have been built.

OK, no blue and white roundels

What aircraft:

1) depending on source, it was an advanced design, far ahead of any other fighter design, or revolutionary
2) it was highly maneuverable but could also be temperamental to fly
3) by the time it was needed in WW2 it was already outdated

Nono, it is not a P-51 or P-39

1) depending on source, it was an advanced design, far ahead of any other fighter design, or revolutionary
2) it was highly maneuverable but could also be temperamental to fly
3) by the time it was needed in WW2 it was already outdated

4) early during its career, press reports mistankenly assumed it was derived from a Boeing design
5) in later models, engine power was doubled compared with the original. All engines were developments on a Wright design

Not a Mitsubishi either.

1) depending on source, it was an advanced design, far ahead of any other fighter design, or revolutionary
2) it was highly maneuverable but could also be temperamental to fly

4) early during its career, press reports mistankenly assumed it was derived from a Boeing design
5) in later models, engine power was doubled compared with the original. All engines were developments on a Wright design

6) it fought in two theaters in the latter half of the '30s, before WW2 ... and did better than most there.
