Larger kit than yours, but here's my Red 1

An absolutely beautiful ''Papagei''! Red 1 is a very interesting airplane. Incidentally, how did you go about applying the inscription '' Verkaaft's mei Gwand 'I foahr in himmel!'' on the port side of the cockpit?

What is the size of this model, what is the manufacturer, and what engine are you using?

Thanks !

The slogan was painted on, using a stencil created on a computer.

My FWis a Don Lien design, now sold by Bob Holman. It's 80", glass fuselage and foam wings. Comes as a short kit. 50cc would be appropriate power.

Thanks for the info on the nice "Red 1". I did a little bit of balsa-block shaping yesterday at the rear top end of ther fuselage, great fun! Next I will start building the bottom of the fuselage.

I did a little bit of sheeting near the stabroot last night. This part is a little tricky so I am going slow.

Started building the bottom fuse last night. The interlocking plywood parts fit very nicely so this was easy going. Will start sheeting the bottom of the fuse today.

The fuse is nearing completion, a few details remain at the back. I am looking forward to starting building the wing!

If you're interested, I have a glass gun hood left over from my topflite build. It looks like the Pica/Platt version but is more scale the the TF version and will look better also. If you want it, just pay for shipping and its yours. I don't ever see myself using it. PM me your email and I'll get you a picture. I also think I have a pic on my forum.

Ramstein, thanks! Sent you a PM.

Started building the wing tonight. When the basic parts areput together without glue, the parts fit perfectly together and the whole assembly fits perfectly over the drawing even without a jig. It's nice when things work!

I will try removing a couple of extra millimeters from the ribs where the retracts are to be mounted, so that the gear doors will be flush with the wing when the wheels are up. Has anyone else trieda modification of this sort, and will itwork?

Made some progress on the wing, essentially finished the sheeting of the top and built the split flaps.

Excellent plane, the saito will be just right. I have a ys 1.20 in mine and she flies great. I bought all the accessories from wolfman for my project also. even the cd of his build. The guy is an outstanding builder. Anyway good luck and I'll follow your build.

Ron

Did you make any modifications to the way retracts are mounted in the wing compared to the TF original? The struts on the FW190D9 are pretty long, so the stress on the mountings duiring landings could be considerable.....

Yes I did, TF IMHO did not engineer the landing gear mounts to be strong enough to handle the not so perfect landing. The landing mount area needs to be beefed up considerable. I glassed both sides of the ribs and made a 1/4" ply rib that went past the spar then sandwich the glassed rib between the two ply ribs.

This photo is from my GS p-47, but I use the same method for all my retract plans.

Thanks for the info. I will use the same method. Here is a progress-report picture so far. Will start working on the retract-area now.

I just started following this thread, looking forward to seeing your progress!

I just picked up one of these TF kits on ebay, I wont say what I paid for it.... (My wife may be reading...)

Keep the pics and building techniques coming!

John

Thanks, I will. Flying season is getting underway, even up here, but I plan on starting glassing the model in not too long time.

Some update?[8D]

Sorry about the late reply. Well, I am getting back into building mode now, priority during summer has been on flying!

Anyway, I am considering the Saito 20FG engine (gas version of the Saito 125A) for this model, does anyone have any experience with it? I fly my TF 60 P47 with a Saito 125A and it provides plenty of power, but I prefer gas to fuel, much less model-cleaning involved.

Just be careful with the nose weight, She has a long nose.

These things are very tail heavy. Most are flying with nose weights, even with 120 four strokes.

P47, I'm considering switching to the saito 20FG from the 125A in my TF190D also. I look forward to hearing some feedback on it if any. Glad to see you back at this.

I wasn't aware that they came in tail heavy. Mine weighs 12#s with a ys-1.20 fourstroke. I builted it according to the plans with a few minor changes, but the tail area is stock other than a retracting tail wheel. I didn't need any nose weight.

Well, since this plane was designed for a 60-90 range and balance well with the "light" YS120 i think is tail heavy by design.

I just received a D9 I purchased from a really nice gentleman on Ebay. The kit was listed with Spring Air Retracts and a cockpit kit. He also threw in an old set of Century Jet retracts that he used on his old D9. I'm going to send those back to CJ because they really need to be overhauled. Anyway, as you can see from the pictures, the kit came in pretty banged up. Something caught the end of the box and ripped the top up and over onto itself. From what I can tell, before that happened, the box was punctured. Whatever went through the top of the box went straight into the canopy breaking it in half. I've looked everywhere for a replacement. Though TF carries parts for some discontinued kits, they don't carry this canopy. I looked into the canopy from Skyshark but it's much too small. Can anyone recommend a good source for a replacement?

Thanks,
Damon

Damon,

Fiberglass Specialties lists a canopy for the 65 inch span Pica FW-190D which may work for you.

Damon,

Also IMP scale at http://www.impscale.com/html/fw_190_d9_.html sells a 190D9 kit in the same Top Flite scale (1/6 i think). I bought the canopy, gun hood, blisters and cowl from them. Very well done and fits pretty well in the top flite 190.

Thanks guys! I think I'll do a little of both suggestions. I'll get the canopy from IMP, since this company is new to me and I'd like to try them out. It looks like their D9 is a touch larger, but that shouldn't be a big deal. Then, I'll make the routine order to Fiberglass Specialites for the cowl, gun hood etc.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it.
