It's been a long time coming, but Strega is finally in the works. I'm trying to build her stand off, but not too far off, scale. There's work being done mostly to prepare her for paint and to get the proper lines right now. I've got decals from Callie Graphics which are outstanding, Keleo exhaust which is also outstanding, Evolution 40GX, and Century Jet Mustang retracts so far. Getting a coat of glass on her and prepped for paint right now. Plan on a Dave Brown 5" Mustang spinner that will be chromed, and a 4 blade Solo prop.

Norm a.k.a. cpt nj has been a great help in making the dream a reality. Check out his build here of a PBM Mariner, you will be impressed, I guarantee it. It starts toward the bottom of page 2 with the post I made for him post 43.

Strega won't be nearly that nice, but pretty close. Here's some pictures to get started with. The Evo 40 should haul the mail with the clipped wings.

Thanks for pointing out your Stangs link. Your early stage photos r cool but you might want to get a better camera when you hit the lotto.till the next keep the shinny side up and the wheels down.

Some more pics of the build. The first picture is where the Keleo exhaust will exit the fuselage. Then blending the horizontal stab into the fuse, and then where the Slimline Excel Fueler will go.

Hangar 9 1.50 size Hoping to get the fuse done so it can be painted by cublover. I have to give cpt nj most of the credit here with the glassing.

Here's some more cpt nj work. This is a Sikorsky float plane don't remember which one, and a hand carved Indian. He makes hand carved pilots you wouldn't believe, as you can tell from the Indian.

I did a very sport scale of Straga 6or 7 years ago. Never could get any good documentation back then. So I just did it up with RC stickers.
There was many firsts on this plane for me
1st warbird/ P-51
1st glass job
1st paint job and
1st retracts


This pic had the FPE 52 in it. It later got a G-62 with a APC T-6 racing prop and man would that thing move.

Sadly this one was lost in a mid air with a T/F P-47 while we where racing 3 planes together(with another P-51). We got tangled up with each other on the front staight-a-way at 135mph. Then mayham insued. My prop cut the P-47 in half and it was destroyed in seconds. Mine was badly damaged but still flying. It didn't have enough speed left to make the runway. It went in the woods and caught fire. Both plane where destroyed but we still laugh and joke about our best race ever.

We still race every chance we get.

Have fun with your Strega! I would love to do another one with the skills I have learned over those years.

OUCH!! I don't intend to race mine, I'm going way too far for that. Already have 750 in the nose and don't even have a prop or spinner yet. I'm working on getting real close to scale. I have a set of Strega decals that would fit a 1/5 Top Flite Mustang just right on this one.

Hey Cowboy we just race for fun. We go to fly-ins together a get up there and mix it up for the crowd. They love it when 3 planes come barreling threw in tight formation. Gets the blood flowing. We have found that three is the limit. Anymore than that and we have to break them up and fly in packs. No sence in being dangerous.


What would a set of decals run for the T/F?
I do have another RTC mustang just sitting under my work bench.

Interesting project CowboyLifesaver, I'll be watching your progress. A couple of years ago I was building a Dave Platt 'stang for a customer and ended up buying the project from him. Problem is, I just can't get too excited about D model Mustangs! I drew up the mods and cut the parts to convert the Platt P-51D into the "Red Baron" racer (Griffon powered). I have never moved forward with the project but a good friend of mine has a H9 P-51 brand new in the box and, since it is essentially the same size as the Platt, he has decided to use the plans/parts to convert his H9 bird into the RB-51 just as you are doing with Strega. I will be looking forwared to seeing your finished product, best of luck with it.

Thanks guys, but I really have to give cpt nj most of the credit. I may be able to make her look like Strega, but cpt nj will make it look good. Hey all check out that link in post 1 to see cpt nj's PBM Mariner. The guy is an artist, not just a builder.

I may do some flying with another Hangar 9 done up as Voodoo if cublover gets her done one day.

The Hangar 9 is not quite 1/5th, but a little smaller, so I have to get a custom set done from Callie Graphics. They have a few different Mustang racers and military types on their page, and Callie is great to work with. Wonderful lady.

Team Strega wants to see her when she's done. Can't wait for that day. I hope she's complete by September for the air races

Capt, I didn't cut anything off the vertical, But I did cut the horizontal stab. I removed the rounded edges on the stab and the main wing. Just squared them up. I didn't notice anything different from stock as far as flying goes..

Thanks for the info. It seens that hanger 9 over sizes there tail feathers on most of there warbirds,I'll be doing some cuttin.I like your qoute.I am serious and don't call me Shirly.

Some new pics of the build. Not much new so far since last post. Check out that Mariner in the background. The first post has a link to some good pics of it. It's a work of art. Going to clip the vertical and rudder on the Mustang about 2 inches too.

Are you sure that Strega has a cut down vertical? I am pretty sure that they kept it stock. I know a couple of the mustangs at reno have borrowed rudders from others when they had problems. I am pretty sure that Strega borrowed Dago Red's or vice versa. Cutting the vertical on a mustang may not be a great idea.

Can't find the technical's I saw before, but the tail is clipped along with the wing, radiator scoop, and horizontal stab. Where the cut line is should make it the same scale size and shape. Hangar 9 also over sizes its tail feathers on their models. I'm going to leave the horizontal alone. the scoop will be stock size, and I won't have the trailing edge extensions.
