ESM 89 in. Spitfire build!!
I will be doing a build or assembly of the ESM 89 in. Spitfire. I recently purchased this and then was going to sell it to help finance my other expensive hobby - classic cars. Cooler heads prevailed and I decided the car can wait. LOL Anyway , feel free to join in with comments and or suggestions. I will be working around the engine installation right now since I haven't received it yet. I will be installing the DLE 55 engine. I plan on pretty much building this in the stock configuration according to the manual, also utilizing the stock retracts designed for the kit. Here are some pics of my car that the Spit superceded.

Started installing and fitting the flaps and ailerons. First I wash all hinges in lacquer thinner. This removes oils and molding release on the parts. The hinges are similar in size and construction to the Robart hinge. I then apply vaseline to the hinge knuckle which lubricates the hinge and prevents epoxy from seeping in and locking the hinge.

I then dry fit the hinges to the control surfaces. Found out the holes drilled in the trailing edge of the wing were off about an 1/8 th of an inch. I filled the factory holes with balsa and drilled new ones. Ithen filled the holes with epoxy and wipe off the excess with denatured alcohol. Make sure the hinges are pushed in the same distance and are perpendicular to the leading edge of the aileron. I glue the hinges into the control surface first then into the wing.

The flaps get the same treatment as the aileron. There is a joiner wire that actuates the small inboard flap section. I prebend the wire to match the dihedral break then CA the drive wire into the large flap section. The two sections have to be mated before you finalize gluing in the flap sections. This wing panel is complete as far as the control surfaces are concerned. Flap servo and aileron servo needs to be installed as well as the retracts. Ailerons have a nice scale hinge cover built in and the hinging looks scale. Flaps are shown at full deflection which should be 85 to 90 degrees.

Very nice because I will have to admit the instructions are a wee bit confuseing for me. On step 21 it says to join the wings and it shows their symbol for epoxy so I almost did just that and then I read ahead and noticed in step 63 it said to serperate the wings so I just stopped. Thanks for the clearification. I can't help but think some guys fell into the trap and glued it up as one piece.

I have a few more concerns I would like to post and hopefully I will get some answers.It appears my main wing spar is too long and will have to be cut down a inch or so. Anybody else run into this or is it just me?
What is the story on the elevator cable? The book says nothing about how it connects at the elevator. I am guessing that it goes into the top hole on the controll horn and runs down to the bottom hole and back to the servo. That would make it one continous cable with two stress points on the cable where it is run through the control horn. Am I seeing this right? I perfer a servo for each elevator myself,has anybody set there's up this way?

Same problem here, I forget how much I took down on it.
Pull-pull on the elevators for me is never going to happen... IMO I just don't trust it, two elevator servos with separate control rods, this is a giant scale.

Can I assume from your post that you set yours up with two elevator servos, and if so where did you mount them in the back sunk into the outside of the fuse or up forward? Is yours already in the air,if so what engine and how much ballest was required if any? I want all the info I can get while in the assembly mode. BTW all my hatch covers were in the kit.

Thanks for that post kinverflyer. I went to the site and it is still in the early stages of construction but it looks like just the place for what I am looking for. I will keep a close eye on it. I can't wait to see some exhust stacks and cannons offered.
