Ok, I have almost everything ordered fo the plane.

The break down.

Plane $1400
Gear $550
Servos Battery and Ext. $300
Receiver $200
Engines $900 (Saito 62)
Exhaust $200
Misc. $200
Quad sync $200
Whiskey/Scotch $100 LOL!
Bribes $2700 (already paid to the wife)

Your looking at about $6550.00 to finsh her out. You may do better depending on your marital status.

I'm not really going to do a build/assembly thread because it looks so simple. I will post the time invested and the Tech notes.

YOU MAY WANT TO ADD TWO onboard Glow Drivers. I would running the 4 stroke engines. I have two on my Wingspan B 17. I am running 4 Saito FA 100's. One for the inside engines the other for the outside engines.

Ive never needed the glow drivers on my twins. My engine guy is the best of the best. ( Thanks Larry ) One flame out in over 300 flights on my TF B-25 thanks to him and even then it was my fault the one time it happened. You really only need one set of motors to land this bird. One set out and you can land with confidence as long as the Quad sync takes out the contralateral motor. I fly either high or fast. Both make for a nice fail safe. I will look at glow grivers just for ease of starting AFTER Larry has a go at them.

As far as the WingSpan model, she shipped today. Id love to swap notes on that bird!

I use them on my twin's and inverted 4 strokes and I have never had one fail. I have not used the Twin Sync, I have heard alot of good things about it. The Wingspan is very heavy model, mine is going to be right at 45 lbs I hope. Most of the guys I know flying these are running the onboard Glow systems.

Yeah no problem let me know when you get started I can send you some of my pictures as the build was going on.

You can see it is off in the picture, not sure if you can fix that. You should be able to get new graphics or have some made and sand that out and repaint and put your graphics on.

No I am not a member of RCS. What are going to tell the wife when the other big box shows up with your bigger plane in it??

I hate to say it but its most likely like that on all of the models. The little guy putting the decals just squared them the the hinge line. Both of mine will be delivered this afternoon so i'll let you know if they are the same.

Your best bet is to paint and have them made locally. they won't replace a vertical unless damaged in transit

Here is a rough pic of the prototype.. you can see it is off on it too.. Being the decals are applied while the vertical is not on the plane you can see how this would be an easy mistake for a general laborer in china....

$1950.00 and your saying I need to repaint and redecal their mistake? I would be the last plane I would ever buy from them. Tower Hobby will ask if you can fix it, provide the materials and pay you labor to make the repair for them if a part is damaged in transit let alone their mistake. Horizon will always make things right "IF" your nice. Upset them and your done.

If they allowed a flaw that big to make it through there production test, which is the plane in your photo, they need to fix it.

The fin is basically glossy Mono/Ultra-coat that had the graphics applied and and then flat applied. I dont think you can get it off without damage or a lot of work. Ill see when I get back home on Saturday. First Ill see if I can pull it up. If I can the rest is easy. Im going to talk to the hobby shop first. They are pretty reasonable folks.

I talked with Mike at Hobby People. Nice Guy. He said that he would look at the planes they have in stock and work with the folks in China for a solution and call me back ASAP which could be a few weeks or tomorrow. I have some very nice OCD and as such a flaw like this has to be repaired. [sm=spinnyeyes.gif] I will continue to look for a solution this weekend on my side. Main thing is to keep them from producing more crooked planes!

Easiest seems to be to remove the decals with a solvent, replace them and re flatcoat over them. It would seem politically correct for Hobby People to supply the materials and a gift coupon from there store as Tower does with there high $$ ARFs if it is more than that. My B-25 was damaged in transit with a hole through the fusalage. They sent me a roll of matching Monocoat and a $25 gift certificate for doing the repair. Not worth it but a nice solution for both parties. And YES, I know that it was insured. 6-8 weeks for a replacement if your lucky going that route, so I happily took them up on their solution.

I do know the people at Tower well. When I bought my 14 Channel Futaba radio from them, they accidently sent me 2 of them. One from Arizona and another from Illinios. At $2400 each they were shocked when I called to see about shipping the other one back. (I wanted a prepaid shipping label) In return they gave me a $15 gift certificate. LOL! But now they are always there for me. If I have an issue, its taken care of.

Anyways, I'm just really looking forward to getting home this weekend and starting on this bird. Kind of different, but I think I'm going to start on the nacelles and motors first. It should be most of the work and I have a nifty plan to try.[sm=shades_smile.gif]

Ok,
I got my planes in this afternoon. They look really nice. My Decals look just like your do.
They are easily peeled off. It appears that the parts are dusted with flat clear. I have painted with a flat polyurethane
before to get the same look..I'll probably pull the Decals off anyway to change the scheme.

AAs I was handling the wing and rubbed it across the finish it smells like a polyurethane also... There Is no bomb bay for the B-17 but I think it could be easily fabricated without causing any structral changes....

It took about an hour for each side. Peeled off each sticker, ETOH to clean it up, sanded it with 600 grit, ETOH to clean it up again, replaced the stickers, ironed them flat and used flat Monocoat clear to seal it.

The color match was way off to begin with. A good reason to change the livery on the tail section. I'm going to feather the plastic to blend it in better.

Looks good,
I talked to Darrell this afternoon. He should have gear for this plane in about 2 weeks. I think Tomas At VQ Warbirds is going to carry them. I am figuring they are under the price of the ASM gear.
I am going to buy some PFM glue. I am going to try on a small area first but I plan on putting a bead on all the seams of the ABS. This will keep from any cracking over time. Its about the same as GOOP but it won't attack the ABS......

I picked up mine yesterday...all 4 nacelles are damaged. The packaging was poorly done where the individual parts weren't secured.
Ah well, back to the LHS...this will unfortunately cause me to buy more stuff since I'm there...

I wasnt feeling well today so not much was done. I'm getting older and the 48 hour straight on call days get to me now. I worked on the tail section again. Seems the crooked graphics was hiding the crooked tail ABS plastic. I staggered it in like panels. The built up parts of the plane really dont match the ABS parts even close, although it looks better in natural light. I always like Top Flite for this reason. It always matches in there birds.

I spent the day yesterday working on the tail section. A migraine kept me from the engines and nacelles. There are a few problems that need addressed when installing the tail wheel and rudder.

First off the rudder and tail wheel share a high torque servo. You have to install the tail wheel retract first and it must be done correctly or you will have to work around the rudder control shaft and arms to fix the tail retract. Not fun. I had to. Its not easy to explain so look at the photos.

The problems are as follows.

When the tail wheel retracts the steering arm hits the rudder steering cables and binds them usually on one side deflecting he rudder and straining the servo and battery. If this happens in flight you done for!! This is happening for a couple reasons. First the cables are not in tubes and second the tail wheel steering arms are too large. It is hitting on one side only because the bulkhead the retract is on was little crooked.

Here is my fix.

1. First cut down the steering arms on both sides by one hole. It still has plenty of throw when done.
2. Place washers under the bolts to the retract mech to make sure it goes straight back and centerline.
3. Drill holes about a 1/4" lateral or oblong the existing holes for the rudder cables.
4. Place plastic tubes over the rudder wires where they pass by the retract mech and through the bulkhead.
5. Cut 2"x3"x1/16" balsa sheet and glue it to the runner between the wires to isolate them from each other.

It works great..

The first three photos try to show the problems. (Red:bind site, White:Rudder wire.)
The last is the fix. (White:balsa, Green:cut down arms, Yellow:shimmed bolts, Red:Rudder wire tubes )

SR,
I don't want to hijack your thread so if you need me to i'll go to another one..

That being said.
I am working with a manufacture on getting some 10th scale pilots made. I was sent a 10th scale jet pilot to see if the size is right. I tried a 1/9 scale pilot and it was too big. Anyway I think the 1/10 scale is just about right. We are going to change the head to one with a flight cap and also some with the WWII standard crew hat. Here are some pic's . For those really ambitious tring to have some standing crew members made for the waiste gunners...

The tail section still bothers me. Im looking for a different livery with a yellow or red tail. I would then fill the seam with micro bubbles and sand it flat. Its really not that bad but I will keep looking for a change to a finer finish.
