Here is a better picture of the drilling for guide dowls, the bottom sheeting was left out untell this was done, the wing is checked for aligment and pressed down as the holes are drilled.. Once the rear 3/8" dowls are glued into the wing the front two holes for the mounting screw is drilled..

Once the wing mounting is set up, the rear dowls inserted and the two front t-nuts installed for the 1/4" wingbolts the wing can be bolted up to the fuselage,, at that point the wing fillet can be built in, starting with about 3/4" balsa tri stock sectionsin the front and working up to 1" or 11/4" to mid section than useing gussets and sheeting to finish off the wide part in the rear... The attached picture ( on another plane) shows the sanding tube I use to shape the fillet curve quickly starting with 50 grit paper and working to about 100 grit paper.. The first picture shows the wing sheeting completed than the wing tips installed and shaped.

Great build so far.
Sorry to intrude but I have just come across a vergin jemco master scale mustang 71" kit. only trouble is no Manual. all eight sheets of the plan are there and eveything else seems compleate. Can anyone hewlp me with the Manual.
Your build has got me intertested in the mastang and I gfeel the need to put CA to Balsa!

The p-51 D under construction now has a solid mounted stabs, if any one is interested in how I did the removable stabs below pictures show the guide pin and the socket hole in the former, the stab isheld down with screws from the top of stab into blind nuts installed in the sadle area. Both stab assemblies are made first from 3/32" balsa cores and half ribs and sheeting on the bottom, than the vetical is glued on and the the top ribed and sheeted..

Jim. I guess it does look like a production run, one thing though these planes as you can see are built solid, no skimping on the balsa and glue and stuff,,, the nice thing is they are solid and can take some abuse as well as being repairable after a crash, just be sure to pick up all the peices to glue back latter, that is not to say they are not super excellent flyers, andeasy to land at a crawl with the flaps down... By the way I looked for your plane to see how it is comming along, it looks like you failed to make a $$$ deposit on it, take care thanks for following, George aka warbirdbuilder...

Ha ha .. George, you're a funny guy !
I guess I'll be over to collect the goods.
So - the build pics will now start coming from my house. Time for final sanding and glassing. Plan to use the usual 3/4 oz cloth. Need to get it glassed, sanded and in prime soon so the mees in the house will be a bit less as things roll along.

Hay Jim I know you have got to have been doing some work on that big P-51, if you have how about some pictures..

OK - some progress pics. Have actually had a few days off the job to get a little work done on the plane.
Wing is now mounted. The front area fillet is done.
the Sierra retract are "roughed" in .... This is just the initial fitting for the rails and depth. plan to set up gear doors of course, waiting on some cylinders and hinges.
Notice the second pic ... the front cowl is at the original design. read next post.

Cowl : Usually this is pinned on the angled portion of the lower cowl. this is a scale location of a parting line anyway.
BUT - as I rarely do things exactly to plans.. I was taking as look at the engine set up and decided I wanted to add some more cooling outlet area. As I looked the situation over, I decided to extend the cowl further back. Why? to add a better muffler situation and make an air passage.
Heres the cut cowl. Have to make formers to support the cut areas now. You can see the original dowl pin location holes.

Once the cowl was modified, I closed off the open areas and made a tunnel of sorts. Notice I added a former to the cut area referenced in previous post.
The first pic is looking back into the fuse. This is behind the cylinder head. See my fingers sticking down from the wing saddle area?
The next pic is looking down on the front wing saddle. Again, see my fingers coming from the engine bay. This is where the air will go.
Where will it go you ask ?? Into the wheel well openings. See my arm going from the engine bay into the wing openings? This proved to be very easy as the front wing to fuse area is basically almost sealed anyway with the saddle and fuse front. I will just add a 1/4" of foam across the back of the air tunnel I made out of balsa.

Wing fillets:
Had to get the wing mounted, then needed to build the fillets up. First got the flaps hinged and into position. Then, the thin ply base was glued into position. The rear area has to be set to the flaps in the up position. Once that is established, the ply bottom can be glued into position. I ued tri stock to hold it in place.
Then I cut small sections of tri stock and glued them on. This is the start of the fillet. Lots of cut pcs, but do 3 at a time - goes faster!
After all the tri stock is glued onto the fillet, get the 1/2 round file and rough file it in. Then take some filler, smooth it on, do final sanding [ which I have not done yet btw - just roughed in right now ] See my high tech tools? A popsicle stick and an old hotel card to put the putty on.
"Old school" building here. But makes a strong airframe in the end.
