Yet a fresh poll...

RE: Yet a fresh poll...
I would like to see more 1/5th scale for the simple reason that I don't want to pay for nitro fuel anymore. The bigger the plane the larger the cowling, and then a gas engine becomes a better option. My example is the cost of a DL versus Saito 1.25 and bigger. I know the plane would cost a little more to equip appropriately, but figure in $25 for nitro vs. $3.50 fuel/oil mix.
1/5th scale corsair arf would be nice, along with some luftwaffe birds. Thanks Pete, a nice poll!

1/6th for me, mainly 'cos, as a Brit, I am a little short on space. 1/5 is a possibility but larger than tha just gets too big and I must say, over here, too damned expensive to justify on what after all is just a hobby. Smaller than 1/6 and they are too small to stand any chance of being realistic either in the air or on the ground.
cheers

RE: Yet a fresh poll...
Yes the fuel cost is far less for gas then glow , but that is where the cost benefit stops, once you start to equip the airframe with electronics, retracts, etc the cost surpass a 1/6 bird easily, not to mention there are very reasonably priced gas engines in the 26cc to 30cc range that fit perfectly in a 1/6 plane with minimal if any cutting to the cowl . Sure can you build a 1/5 scale bird on a budget and keep cost down ? of course you could but its the exception if you ask me

RE: Yet a fresh poll...
I am not so concerned with the scale as I am with the size. I find a 30% Jungmeister is good as are lots of 1/5 monoplanes like a Macchi C200, Wildcat, Buffalo, Zero, FW-190 etc. ARF's past 1/6 scale don't do much for me, the lack of good fit and fine detail is enough that I am willing to spend a year or more building something like I want it, or at least give it a good try. The SisT FW-190 is the only composit kit I would consider but I don't call that an ARF. I do like the way the KMP Bf-110 flys but it is not a scale looking bird. With effort and time it can look nicer but then it might as well be a build.

I decided a few years back that 1/5 th is as big as I am going to go.For what I have to haul them around with and the room in my house[garage] thats big enough.I will stay with glow[Moki's] and the cost is as high as I will go.
Multi's are realy cool but again the cost is too much. Pete you do a nice job here on RCU. Tom

RE: Yet a fresh poll...
I picked 1/5 scale. I'm building a 1/4 scale bird for a friend and I can't transport it in my car. I have a 1/6 and 1/5 WWI bird and they are big enough for me. The only problem is it seems to be hard to find any 1/5 scale accessories. All I can find is 1/4 and 1/6 scale.

I hear ya, the 1/5 scale are very hard to find - most cases impossible. Some companies offered a few years back complete scale packages for their kits. Like aileron booster fairings antenna bases and so forth. It would be not too hard for the ARF MFG to pick this idea up and have a second line for accessories to trick the airplane out...
