The P6E Hawk Returns

Glad to see the Great Planes P-6E coming back. It is such a beautiful plane (even for a monokote covered arf)
Don't know why they discontinued it in the first place.

You can be a airplane enthusiast, and hate the P6E paint scheme?

wow, just WOW !

If you dont like the cover scheme then change it

RE: The P6E Hawk Returns

I am still amazed someone could not like the scheme, every picture I have seen of a P6E painted any other way is a far second to the owl ..

I guess beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder...

Planeugly???

Wow, Wasn't expecting that. To each his own I guess.

I fly mine at airshows regularly. Never got anything but compliments.

It's also a very good flying plane. Whats not to like?

RE: The P6E Hawk Returns

I've had mine for a bit over a year now and it's a good, honest airplane. One thing I noticed though is the OS 1.20 does fly the plane in a scale-like manner but, in my mind, it was simply under-powered. I swapped out the four-stroker for an SV 26cc gasser and it proved to be a smart move. Being a "draggy" airframe, the SV doesn't pull my Hawk through the air any faster but the vertical manueuvers are much better. To be honest, if I had a 30cc engine, I'd pop that into it but I'll leave the 26cc where it is as it does a good enough job as it is.

finally, I can get some spare parts for it now :)

I am going to do a heart transplant as well, might be going DL-30 or the JC-28

RE: The P6E Hawk Returns

I bought one of these off scratch and dent one time, it was missing the turtle deck piece and the tail fairing..it showed up at my house crushed ! I was so disgusted.. I never could find a good deal on one on scratch and dent...

Bought it missing parts, got crushed in shipping....

Unfortunately they are discontinued again, and there's only a few new spare parts left at Horizon. As far as the color scheme goes, it's a scale model of the real deal, color scheme included. I think the Snow Owl scheme is awesome. Pretty fancy considering these planes were in service in the 1930's. I wouldn't dream of altering anything about the plane, except upgrading to a spring loaded tailwheel.

Hi Freeonthree, have you flown the Hawk yet? What size engine did you use? Are you happy with the engine choice and plane? Got one still in the box. Gathering information before starting. Thanks.

freeonthree 12-29-2013 11:03 AM

I flown it 3 or 4 times when the previous owner had it. It flys great. Im still waiting for my satallite receiver to get here. The engine is a Zenoah G20, and the prop is a 16x6. The prop looks slightly short for the plane at first glance, but it flys so good im not going to change anything. The Hawk is a very easy plane to fly and land, so you should never need any of those discontinued parts we can't get anymore. It flys and lands like a big ol cropduster. Dennis

ocrcdude 12-29-2013 06:14 PM

That sounds good I'm thinking about a G-26, or a DLE 30. With the G-20 did you have to add weight? And if you did about how much? I'm leaning more toward the G-26, but I've got while yet till I start. Thanks Dennis.

freeonthree 12-29-2013 06:42 PM

I didn't put this arf together. I bought it used. The guy who origionally put it together passed away several years ago. And honestly, I don't know if it's a G20 or a G26 converted to CDI. Here's a video of it flying about a year ago, same engine...you tell me cause I don't know for sure. lol

ocrcdude 12-29-2013 07:11 PM

Nice, they said that it had a G-26. That just might be the engine I'll use. Great video. Sure like the flying field, there own personal street. Thanks.

freeonthree 12-29-2013 07:20 PM

We only flew there until we got back into the mill. I think it's a G20 because of the 16x6 he put on it, and the fact that it's got CDI. It's still using the origional prop as far as we know. Greg never changed it, and the origional owner never crashed it so wouldn't of had to. The prop looked so old I repainted the tips and balanced it. The Hawk is also pretty light. I bet it's a G20.

freeonthree 12-29-2013 07:26 PM

My satallite receiver will be here tomorrow, so i'll be installing it. I'll have the cowl off to check fasteners also, so i'll look for that white crank sensor holder the G20's have.

ocrcdude 12-30-2013 06:57 AM

Sounds good, Have a good time flying it. And just for the fun of it let me know what engine it is for sure. 16X6 is a okay prop for the 20 and 26. I used a 18X6W by APC on a built PT-19 by Dynaflight, with an 89 in. wing span, it flew it just fine. Thanks, Danny

freeonthree 12-30-2013 07:33 AM

I thought about trying an 18x6. The 16x6 looks slightly short for the plane. An 18x6 would look better. This plane is supposed to have a 3 bladed prop, but thats not going to happen. I don't like the way they look. lol

freeonthree 07-25-2015 02:31 PM

I sold the plane a few months ago due to a bad back making it difficult to carry in and out of the house, but it is a G20. I tried a an 18x6 and it simply couldn't pull it. Dennis
