Hi,
started collecting plans and documents for Brewster. Havent desided the scale, it will be 1/4 or 1/3. My fingers are like group of sausages so there is plenty of room for radio installion.
If anyone is builded or flown Brewster in any scale are most welcome to jointo discussion here!Going to visitso many times as possibleat Tikkakoski museum and shoot pictures from last Brewster.

Cheers

There is a current but slow build on rcscalebuilder. I will be starting a 1/5 build using a Saito 450 and Sierra Precision build next year. I need to finish a repair/make over of my 1/5 Wildcat first.

I admire what the Finns were able to do with what was considered an obsolete design at the time.  Then again, I admire EVERYTHING about "The Winter War" and what was accomplished.  Roosevelt's biggest mistake was in yielding to Stalin and not backing Finland in 1939.

Note the 3-view was while it was still experimental and the vertical stabilizer was changed in production.

From what I read the Brewester was a real brawler.  Slow, but it could turn inside almost anything.  In Finnish colors it achieved 29:1 against Soviet aircraft!  Those were older aircraft as well, but the Dutch proved it wasn't just that in the East Indies.  A flight of eight Dutch Brewesters jumped 20 Zeroes escorting 35 bombers and drove them off, splashing 11 of them and losing four of their own; and two of those pilots were rescued.  The pilots loved them because they absorbed a lot of damage and kept fighting.

And true winter war was hard and cold. My grandfather is veteranand worked on Utti airfield at war time. And i served my time in army on very same place. There is still some war time barracks left. Very historic field in Finland.

And true finnish pilots loved the plane. On cold winter they kept fire under the engine so they could start the plane in -40celsius. Indeed aircooled engine, no frozen water in radiator. Im sure the pilots needed something stronger also keeping blood running...

Sleek it is not. But it will stand out from all the Mustangs and Jugs in the pits.

The British had an uninspiring nickname for them: "Suicide Barrel" Surprisingly they did no better or worse than the Hawker Hurricanes in the Pacific Theater.

I have a 105 inch Bates Buffalo 1/2 built. the only thing left to build is the wing panels and then mount the stab/rudder and close up the aft fuselage.

Mike Selby built one for Top Gun a few years back. The Brewster can grow on you. I have let to many other projects get in the way![:@] There is a good Polish book on this also. If you are going to compete ask Jerry Bates about a 3 view. It should match the plans.

Here you can see it differs from the GeeBee Model R - the GBR always completes the headstand into a full flip.

I sold Carl Becker my Sierra Giant Scale gear for the Brewster not thinking they would not be available again. Big mistake. Carl, I want them back!

I made a 1/5th scale cowl mold for this machine. Not sure what designation it is, but I am certain it is not the version used on the Brewsters used in Finland. Let me know if anyone needs this one. I would estimate in the last 10 years that I have only sold 4 or 5. Not a very popular cowling. Not worth doing.

I'd love to see a Buffalo fly some day.

Good morning,
Leo, indeed there is many variations in cowl. going to make plug and mold for Finnish version. Its a shame there is not so many flying models from this one. I have heard all the flying reports are telling same story in any scale, its an excellent flyer.
Here pic from slightly crashed cowl..

Greetings from Finland

Sorry Jörö I think that BW-393 was not most well performed single plane during WW II. Record leader migth be German Me 110 night fighter. I can not find just now pilot of that plane but he scored over 50 with that.

Anyway nice that you start that project and as you know best three views you can find in Finland either Matti Patteri or Pentti Manninen. Manninens drawings are well published, twice in Pienoismalli (Finnish model magazine) and also in some other publications. And Matti has build one 1:4 BW. Which might be in Finnish Aviation museum in Vantaa.

Are you going to start that metal banging again?

You got me Erkki,
Metal will be banged again. I already sent message to Matti and will see is there plans for sale. And Pentti manninen told me his plans are too small for enlarging.
Yep there is only few good sources. Have seen Mattis Brewster and its truly a beauty. I just need something to do for my hands. so slowly progress in ahead.
