ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
I've been looking at these two aircraft for a 30cc engine. I know the Model Tech version is a little smaller but I'm wondering if anyone has seen both and could maybe comment on their impressions of quality, etc between the two. thanks.

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
In my honest opinion, a 30cc engine is way to big for either of these airframes.

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
I was pretty much of a mind the Model Tech was too small; but what do you base your comment on the ESM on, there site says rated for a 26cc gas, pretty much the same thing.

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
Of the two, the ESM would be the better of the two to use a gas engine. It's a much larger airframe and there are several out there where guys have used gas engines, without having to butcher cowling to bad. If you do a search for the ESM P51B or D model, you'll see some pictures showing a gas engine installations. I will be using a RCV 120 in a ESM P-51.

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
The model tech p51b is a 90-120 size plane and is only a few inches smaller wingspan than the ESM. As I recall the model tech is about 66 inch wingspan vs 71 inches for the ESM.
You can get spare cowls and canopies from ARFPROS for the ESM. Not sure about the model tech. One of the pilots in my club has the ESM spitfire 71 inch. He used the Syssa 180 gas engine in his. It looks great. The Syssa fits in the spitfire cowl without cutting it much at all - except on the bottom for the cylinder head/spark plug and the muffler tubes. i haven't seen the model tech. Model Tech also has/had a 40 size p51d as well. Ed |

This might be of interest to you I have just finished and test flown my YT (ESM) P51B powered by a JC Aero28.

I too am putting a Syssa 180 in the new plane

ORIGINAL: mimoore67 In my honest opinion, a 30cc engine is way to big for either of these airframes. Several people have put 30cc engines in many of the EMS warbirds in this class with excellent results. |
RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
Kinverflyer, I read your YT forum post. Very nice. I love the idea of putting the retract system just in the wing. Could you possibly post a couple of pics here and amplify how you did it. thanks.

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
the modtech one is a little fella, suitable for a 70 size fourstroke, the esm one will be great with any 30cc engine, the engine kinverflyer specs, is a great bit of kit, i favour the dle 30 rear induction, there are build threads of this model, and several others on our YT forum

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
kinverflyer, is your P-51B version out of production? I can't find it on either VQ or TBM.

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
martins will be the current version, chek your importers site

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
I would venture a guess and say that the DLE20 cc would be a much better choice in size and power for both airframes considering they would both cowl in perfectly and displace a good amount of power
|
RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
the 20 would be suitable for 10-15cc models,it would be at the smaller end of the engine range for our birds, the smaller stang would not be suitable for gas conversion

ORIGINAL: ZERO-322 I would venture a guess and say that the DLE20 cc would be a much better choice in size and power for both airframes considering they would both cowl in perfectly and displace a good amount of power The Model Tech P-51B flying weight is 8.75 lbs and is perfect for a 20cc engine. I fly a Great Planes RV-4 which weights 9+lbs w/ a Zenoah G20 and it is great. The ESM P-51B flying weight is 13.5lbs and a 30cc will fly it well. |
RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
Thanks buddy !
the DLE 20 has impressive stats it may seem like a small engine but I think it would fit the bill currently this engine is being flown on a 16 Lbs CMP zero with good results, you be the judge |
RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
1 Attachment(s)
The JC Aero 28 has balanced the plane very nicely, with out the addition of any ballast

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
seeingas YT have been supplying the mod tech stang, from ages ago, ireally dont think it will suitgas conversion, its an old design, but we still keep getting asked for it, so, it still gets built at the factory, mind you, its supplied with good mech retracts, and a polished ally spinner, it flys well, and even makes a good slope GLIDER!!!

The ESM version is quality film covered (sourced by us, and very good it is too) painted, decalled, then all sealed in with varnish, the mod tech version is film covered, with all decals applied, great, cheap little performer |

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
Folks, lets not start another thread fight. I got the info I needed and decided that the ESM was the way to go. I always thought it ( Model Tech) was too small for a 30cc plane. Probably fly great on one of the new 20cc engines.

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
splais - For ESM planes i would suggest you buy from VQ Warbirds. The guy who operates this is active here and seems to be very helpful to people. ARFPROS is now the sole US importer of ESM planes. I think TBM still sells them too.

RE: ESM P-51B vs Model Tech P-51B
OOPS!!!! ME BAD mod tech do indeed list a P51B at 66"span, this was part of a range being developed with our help many moons ago, there was quite a few in there, i dont know what happened to them, but we gave up on them, and we are the UK importer, rc34074, please accept my apologies, and thanks for persisting, its been that long since i got the pictures of this new range of aircraft, i had simply erased them from memory, still wont take a 30cc though:D do me a favour you guys, send them a polite email, asking what happened to this range, they would have been very popular if they have already made it to the stores, we havnt seen them, and we where in at the birth!!!</p> |
