Thank you Scott. That was a nice compliment.

I have met Bob Banka (Bob's Aircraft Documentation) and have some of his articles on scale building. One thing he always suggests is to let other skilled fellow modelers see your work and get objective feedback on it prior to paint. I feel these forums are a good way to do this. Many skilled builders are in our virtual work shop to see our work. I welcome all constructive criticism as well as the unsolicited encouraging compliments when we get it right. Please keep it coming guys.:D

I've said many times, my ability as a modeler has been so profoundly advanced by the wealth of knowlege that is shared here on RCU and other sites online. The internet is one of the biggest advancements in tools for model building.

<span style="font-size: larger">Watching what you do gives me a better appreciation of the work and effort that it takes to really do a quality job making a scale RC plane.

I have been able to see finished, numerous planes, that have competed inTop Gun and other events. However, this thread makes it come to life. It's a step by step progression of what it takes to make one great plane.

I can also take with me some tips and methodologies for doing my sport scale planes. Personally I do not have the skills, time or inclination to do what you do. However,I can much better appreciate what it takes to compete at the highest levels.

I can remember years ago when some builders wouldn't be bothered orhide theirmethods, even though they may have had some help. It's not like you are giving up a"Magicians Secrets". You guys are showing people who enjoy our activity how to get better if they want to pursue a higher level of accomplishment.A great musician appreciates another great Magician performance. So do the people who just come out to watch. You are an artist/engineer showing others how to get better. You are also showing some of us how to have fun with the building process.

"You got the right stuff!" I can't wait till top gun. It's a real art and engineering show.</span>

Thank you Buckmeister. You pretty much nailed how we feel about what we do and our fellow modelers. I have learned so much via these sites, it is gratifying to be able to give some back for others.

One thing I like to highlight for others is the fact that most of what my brother and I do, we do in our own shops, without CNC machinery, CAD, etc. Many times I have wished I had those things, but as it is, we are compelled to use resourcefulness and creativity to use things that most guys probably have laying around the shop, to do what we do. I encourage guys that have a passion for scale planes, and that like to build, to give it a try. An understanding wife helps a little bit too.:D

I do very much enjoy what I do, but it isn't all fun. I glued my fingers to the inside of the plane again tonight.:D

We like the fact that the Toledo show is always a couple weeks before Top Gun. It gives us a chance to run the plane and the documentation through some pretty good judges, and get some feedback on the model. Also attending are some of the top builders in the country that one can visit with. A very good cross section of modelers are in attendance and a pleasure to talk with. Hope to see many of you there.

As for Top Gun, it will be a pleasure to have a modeler like yourself, with a passion for Corsairs, check our bird out.

Hi ram 3500 im scratch building a 110'' winspan corsair and I need your help can you tell me the zise of the cokpit opening side to side and front to back. thanks.

Sure can.

width at the back = 6 3/16"
width at the front = 7"
length of the side openings = 6 1/8"
The the overall length front to back is 7 7/17" measured strait across the top of the fuselage
The heigth of the back in the opening is 4 5/16"

Here are a couple more dimensions that may help.

Distance from the nose back to the cockpit opening = 24"

Distance from the front of the vertical stab forward to to the rear of the cockpit = 22 1/8"

Hi Gary,

I was going through some of my photos and I came across these access doors that have the 3 screw configuration. There are 3 on the underside of both outer wing panels. Also, there are the 3 screw style access doors on the right side only of the rudder, on the underside of the left elevator, and the top of the right elevator.

Yes, those are the ones I typically see, the reason why the ones with only one hole threw me. But I think the three screw ones are what they eventually went to, one screw being the original, and the ones on our F4U-1A.

The one on the right side of the rudder really puzzles me though. I don't see one there on any of the drawings or pictures I have. Could this have been added in the field, or during restoration?

I just checked the VS factory drawings for the covering of the rudder and elevator, and they do show the access doors in the positions in the photos. Note, they are only on one side of the surfaces. Interestingly, the drawings give the same VS number for these access doors as the ones for the fin and horizontal stabilizer.

I think we have nailed the ones on the elevators (still need to change the screws), but the one on the rudder is driving me crazy. I have numerous pictures and drawings showing it on the port side, and only that side. Any idea why the discrepancy?

Ultimately, I will go back over the pictures of BIG HOG to see if I can pick up this detail so we have it right.

Darn problems with RCU [:@]

Let me try this post again.

I was looking at some period photos of VF17 Corsairs. They clearly show the access door on the port side of the rudder as you have seen. I suspect the door being on the starboard side on 799 (PoF Corsiar) is the result of restoration work. I did come across one drawing of the XF4U which shows the access door on the starboard side. it is along with drawings of the 1 and 1-A with the door on the port, and by the same artist. Clearly 799 is not an XF4U, and I seriously doubt the rudder is from the XF4U either. If it were me, I would go with the door being on the port side. My curiosity is up, and I'll continue to look for period photos to see if there are any that show it on the starboard.

I just looked at a photo of the XF4U, and it has the door on the port side in contradiction with the published drawing I referenced. I'm learning good stuff here!

The other little tid-bit I just picked up about the Corsiar that is painted as Big Hog at the Navy Yard Museum in DC is that is may not be a Vought F4U-1, but a Goodyear FG1-1D. The author of The Vought F4U Corsair, A Comprehensive Guide makes this assertion based on the position of the wing pylons.

As we know, the other access covers were on the port side of the vertical stab. Maybe they decided it would be easier for maintenance if they were all on the same side.

I checked some books I have and verified that BIG HOG did indeed have the round cover on the port side of the rudder, just where I have it. Good news for me.:D

I'm working on getting the canopy done this evening. Before I move onto the cockpit, I'll go back and fix the retaining screws on all the round access panels. I don't like going backwards, but I can't see leaving something incorrect that can be fixed.

Got my profile tool out and made quick work of this.

In the plate mounted to this structure will be all the switches, charging ports, and other devises.
