looking for a ME 163
 

I am looking for a 40 to 60 size ME 163, but did not have too much luck to find a decent kit.
I would prefer a fixed gear, capable of starting on a grass strip.
Does anybody know where I can find this?

That is a plane I am planning on building myself so I am glad to find your post.The original aircraft was flown off a dolly just as a lot of early control line speed planes did to keep weight down.
I will see if I can come up with a source for a kit or plans to share with you.There are ARFs of this plane on the market however, you will have to modify for a true landing gear.

The Flyboys Models ME-163 as it's known is actually made by CY Model in China.

I believe Texasrc has them in stock.

I can not find a kit of the flyboys version.

For the Bob Hollman Kit, do you have to buy all the parts? About $300 or did I miss something?

I really like the 163, but also interested in any of the Horten, but found very little information about these.

Someone does sell a wood built up plan in the 40-60 size, I Framed one up for a friend, and I even flew it a little bit.. It flew pretty well .. The trick was getting the reflex right on the control surfaces (a little up both sides), its been a long time since we flew it ... Also the cart needs to be built much sturdier than you think.. Its critical it will release cleanly also.. My buddy actually had one cart drop that managed to bounce up and hit the fuse, just like the real ones did on occasion. It is definitely a cool plane to show up with at the field..

We weren't sure what it was going to do back when we first flew it though !

I got one from Flyboy models a couple of years ago. It actually took second place in a local scale meet, though I think it had more to do with the fact that I flew several times without crashing than how the model looked. If you get one of these, balance it at the screws that hold the wing panels to the fuse. The "book" CG is WAY too far forward. I still have the airplane. It has an OS 55AX for power, but it's not for sale.:) Since then I've acquired a Joe Saita 82" Komet kit with glass fuse. I still haven't decided whether to go turbine or electric in it. She looks beautiful. I have a few questions. I see yoou used a dolly for take offs like the full size plane did.Does holman show construction of the dolly in his plans.Did you use some sort of release mechanism for the dolly?How would you rate the complexity of the build?

Joe Saita flies at out field and I have had two of his Me 163s. One years ago was built up balsa and ply and .40 powered. The current one is a glass fuselage and built up wing, it is powered with an OS 1.08. Great flying models, though the dolly take offs can be exciting.

The dolly is an axle with two wheels. In the center is a metal tab about 1 inch wide and two inches long, about 1/8" thick. It fits into a slot in the bottom of the fuselage, just drops out when the model lifts off. One fellow at our field fixed one up with conventional landing gear. Take offs seemed more predictable, but the thing looked silly in he air with the gear hanging down where they shouldn't be.

Joe is currently flying a turbine powered one and it is quite impressive. I haven't seen a .40 sized one in years, but give Joe a shout, he may be able to help you. [email protected]

I fly mainly giant scale and think it would be a great project to build one with a 80" span. Does any one know of plans in this size range?
