Ziroli Spitfire
 

I know Nick very well and i begged him for years to draw up a set of spitfire plans . Well they have been do for a while now and are my to do list. i was wondering why no one's building nicks spit . i searched RCU for at least one build thread and nothing. Is anyone planning to do a build thread? has anyone seen nicks spit fly? WB_1

The Z Spitfire will probably be my next build, however, i am weary of it because of the difficulty in hiding a muffler in the cowl. I have a Z Hellcat, Z Bearcat and Z Corsair which all have a big, round cowls giving you lot's of room for batteries, ignition box and a pitts style muffler. i also have a Z Mustang which has been a pita because of the narrow cowl. I had to cut a huge chunk out of the side of the cowl for muffler clearance...it looks like crap.
Engine cooling is a secondary concern since the cowl on a Spitfire is fully enclosed. These two issues alone makes me consider a Meister P-47, although nothing flies like a Ziroli, and the Spitfire is one awesome looking airplane.

There are pictures of a couple of finished Ziroli Spitfires in the Spitfire Brotherhood thread here in the warbird forum. There is also a build thread going on in the Ziroli forum at RC Scale Builder although I don't think it has been updated in a while. I too am a bit surprised at the lack of excitement this one has generated.

I saw Nick fly his spitfire at WOD last year. He had a G62 for power. He said he chose the G62 because he could hide it completely in the cowl. His spit looked great. The plane flew well as all Nick's design do and was not under powered. But with all due respect to Nick I think it needed a little more than the G62. Of course I like have some extra power and like to fly fast. I would definitely consider building his spit. I'd go with a DA85 for power.

yea , i can see where a 100" plane could use a few extra ponies. i have a 33 lbs. byron at-6 and it fly's good on a g-62. even when i pull fairly big loops.

I forgot to ask Nick what his all up weight was. I'm guesing it's got to be in the high thirties. I think the G-62 is a great warbird power plant up to 35 lbs. I think a 75 CC engine like the old 3W75 would fly this spit well. I have a 29 1/2 lb Byron P-51 with a G-62 and it moves along very well.

Two of Nicks Spits will be test flown in the next two weeks:)

They are out there! These two spits where built from plans #1 and 2 that Nick sold.

Don't know yet.

My kid graduated High School this year and it has really put a damper on my flying season. My Spit should have been test flown in April but I put everything on hold until all my honey-dos were taken care of.

Man, I want to come this year, we'll see. I will PM you if I do.

This is Hams buddy with the other Ziroli Spit, I think the reason you haven't seen much on building his spitty is because people like to see someone else build them first and prove that they are good birds!!! I cant wait to get this one in the air!

Two Ziroli Spits test flown!

Great flyers. We test flew them at Fond Du Lac this past weekend. Perfect field for test hoping.

No bad habits really, I lost a flap servo on final, pulled the remaining flap back up and landed her nice and easy.

With a 10 knot head wind and flaps she might not want to land!

that's a typical spit. any tendencies to nose over while taxiing or bounce on landing? i had a yellow spit but i sold it as i didn't like the griffon version. it was a dream to fly . here's some pics and a video of nick and i flying it. i was after nick for years to do a spit and now i have to man up and do one lol

I just got back from the RAM show in New Jersey and after watching your videos I could not resist getting the plans and peices for the Spitfire. I will be putting one of the new DLE 85s in it and use the robart retracts. I asked Nick how much weight he put in the nose and he said lots. That is nomal for a spitfire. How much did you end up with in the nose and did you balance as per the plans. It sure looked stable on landing.

The CG on my plans is marked 6 inches from the leading edge, but is is wrong. Nick made adjusted the CG to 5 inches after he test flew his.

Mine is at 5 inches with 5 lbs in the nose for ballast. I'm going to remove a half pound and fly her.

From my experience I don't think she will notice the difference. She handles very well on the ground and in the air. There is a video of the test flight on Utube. Not very good but is does show you what you need to know. My muffler broke in flight thus the long roll out due to the idle not wanting to settle down.

The new DLE 85 is a great choice for the Spit. Buy contest grade balsa for everything aft of the trailing edge. I do think if built right, 3 lbs in the nose is doable.
