Engine Size Question For Plane
Ok im sure these types of questions are a dime a dozen but anyway. What would you think i would be more suited with, i need a power house for my 14lb warbird and im debating between these two engines.
OS FS Surpass II Displacement: 0.702 cu in (11.5 cc) Bore: 1.02 in (26 mm) Stroke: 0.87 in (22 mm) Practical rpm: 2,000-12,000 Output: 1.1 bhp @ 11,000 rpm Weight: 20.3 oz (580 g) or OS 2 Stroke 91 FX Displacement: 0.912 cu in (15.0cc) Bore: 1.091 in (27.7mm) Stroke: 0.976 in (24.8mm) Practical RPM: 2,000-16,000 Output: 2.8 bhp (ps) @ 15,000 rpm Weight: 19.3 oz (550g) basically i want to be able to fly the plane scale but i dont want to have a problem with getting her up in the air and doing pretty decent stunts. Nothing like a sport plane just your normal stunts. So what would you suggest is the best way to go. I do like the fact that the Surpass is 4 stroke so it will give it that sound. Anyway, suggestions? |
RE: Engine Size Question For Plane
I would go with the OS 1.20 Surpass III for your 14 lbs warbird. The OS .70 you listed above will be underpowered. The .91FX will do the job, but the 1.20 four stroke will be the most suitable and capable engine.

RE: Engine Size Question For Plane
Are you buying an engine or do you already have these two "in stock"? Personally, I would opt for the larger OS 1.08 swinging a 16X6 for that size airplane. Yes, I do prefer 2 strokes over 4 strokes.

RE: Engine Size Question For Plane
If this is a kit I usually go with the high end (or little more) of the "recommended engine" size. If not - I would say about .90 2 stroke or equivalent 4 stroker should be fine.
As far as 2 vs. 4 strokes is a concern – it is a personal preference, but you right 4 strokers does sound cool, especially on the warbird. |
RE: Engine Size Question For Plane
No matter how nice looking a warbird is, if it doesn't have retracts and sounds like crap, then it won't get any respect from most warbird pilots. Go with either a 4-stroke or a large gas engine in your warbird.

RE: Engine Size Question For Plane
Well it suggests a .60-.90 2/4 stroke engine.And yes its a kit.

RE: Engine Size Question For Plane
One other thing, i think a 1.08 is way to much power, and a 1.20 is crazy. A budy of mine flys an 18lb stuka with a 1.08 and the thing absolutly rockets around like you wouldnt believe. I should have mentioned this is going to be a bomber, pacific theater to be exact, so its ok if its a little slower (more scale), like 50-60mph. Im actually looking into getting an .80 for it though, sort of a waste as well as i do have the above two engines already that need a home.
