Sliding canopy

1 Attachment(s)
I was thinking about various methods to do this, and since I have a winch servo on hand, I opted for this option.

First time doing this so here's few questions (I dont' want pullies used as I think it would be hard to install in an ARF, and the vibrations...http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2046002, so the bent brass tubing (wrote copper, but meant brass LOL) seems optimal and cheap ;)

1- what is a good arc size to prevent excessive friction in a 90 deg bend
2- how to set the travel if Y(ed) to a flap servo channel

P.S. there would be a small spring in the fishing line to prevent any slack.

Thanks

Hi Vasek,
I have sliding canopy on my La-5FN, but must set it on the ground. But I saw some RC solution with big servo horn.

Here you can see it on ESM Spitfire. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-w...-rework-2.html

Yes, I've seen the big horn setup, thanks. The problem is that I already have a winch servo, the big arm would be a different servo ($)

Could you show some picture. Sometime the real picture is better than drawing.

Well, got not much to show, but after assessing the pull-pull installation, I decided to go with the option you suggested (long arm). It will be easier.;)

Have to cut the rails and we shall see. For now I have been playing around with a mock-up graphics with paper cut-outs to see the sizes/ location of the graphics. I'm happy with what I came up, not scale, just what I would have flown in the Korean War if I were in it LOL

What size of the rails did you use?

LDM wat's the travel on that servo, looks like too small amount for big size plane (?)

update on the scheme: double digits look more "bad-as*" right? :O

Vas, it has a 180 range of travel , cheapo retract servo from the US.
The P40 is done with a Fergelli servo, it will pwoer a 1/4 scale canopy , no issues at all but you will pay dearly at $70 a shot , however nothing is easier then Fergelli when coming to simple set up .

MyLX 79 " P40 , also used a Fergelli on a 66" Corsair , the servo is in the rear fuse and drives the canopy from the top of the frame

Here is one on a 1/5 Spitfire of mine.

Very nice ED , what did you use in the process ?

Just en update for the final nomenclature version, I figured to get a new(er) plane by the time of the Korean War, I'd have to have 3 digit no. on my Corsair.

I bonded square tubing into the fuselage sides and used an air cylinder to move the canopy. I tried several servo-based setups, but wasn't happy with the results and wasn't convinced that they would remain robust over time. My current setup has lasted several years and several hundred flights. It is also completely hidden from view.

nice I have air in my Fw190 but I am not getting the smooth movement as you did .
The one thing i like about yours vs a linear servo is that yours is more scale, the linear servos are so precise but a canopy did not move in a precise robotic movement .

Flyfast1 12-02-2014 06:33 PM

I did use a Robart adjustable air valve on the air cylinder that drives the canopy, which helped slow it down. I also use a separate air tank (the smallest available) and lines for the sliding canopy. I didn't want to use the same system as my main/tail wheel landing gear in case there was an air leak.

Thanks ED , I did the same thing on my Fw190 two tanks and used the small one for the canopy , I have to go back and slow it down , that is what i did wrong !
Thanks again
Lou
