This will be my exact color scheme. This is a Jim Ryan Rarebear I built 6 years ago. Electric, very fast!

Hi Mark,

I'm also using Sierra gear but going air on this one. I have the electric conversions on a few others but had issues on larger aircraft.. I was curious where you got the scale tail wheel??? I heard Sierra is designing one, but he didn't respond a few weeks back when I emailed him. Rob

Hey Greg,

I have the actual retract unit from sierra, but the wheel itself is what I'm looking for. I think Darrell said he was just about done with wheel for the retract.

Greg Wright 02-15-2015 11:25 AM

Ok!

Rob,

Here is the tailwheel I have. What problems did you have with the large electric retracts?

Hi Mark,

thanks for the lead on the tail wheel option. that BVM wheel looks great and I'm ordering one. Regarding the electric problem, first, It wasn't with Down and Locked, it was with robart electrics. I've heard good things on the down & Locked. But when it came to the robart on two of my other giant scale planes, a Pilatus PC-21 and a TP GS P-47, I've had nothing but issues. I've had them lock up many many times. work on the ground great, then one landing and they bind and freeze. The actuator has what they call a "Amp out motor cutoff & protection". So any over stress on the motor will stop it so the motor doesn't burn out. I think when you get to heavier a/c, like over 30 lbs, the weight of the gear obviously increase to support it. If the motor gets too much tension, it cuts out and you have to recycle. I started running my P-47 electric gear on their own battery, a 2S direct, and that helped a bit since it gave a little more power to the motor. I also like air since I can move the gear at a speed I like, not just the speed of the motor, which I find a bit slow with electric on the larger heavier gear. Robart told me I must have made a hard lading for them to bind.. I'm not perfect, but my Top Flite p_47 never had a hard landing. Most of the guys I've spoken to about larger, heavier planes seem to stick to air or hydraulic now. so Just a preference for me.... I know air has it issues too, but if you use top quality connectors/valves and wire ties on all connections they seem pretty reliable. nothings perfect and Down & Locked have a good reputation. They gear to have settled in on my P-47 and i keep them gear clean and use a dry lube.

Looks really great Rob! Yours too Mark.

There are two warbirds I always wanted to do. 3W Bearcat with a moki, or Airworld FW190.

Is 3W still making the Bearcat?

rbgetz 02-16-2015 06:55 AM

Hey MattyMatt...

I was really thinking of an Airworld FW190. That's an awesome plane. Yes, 3W still makes the Bearcat. In the US, it's distributed through Aircraft International. http://www.aircraftinternational.com If you do get a moki from Vogelsang Aeroscale, make sure to ask Gotz about the FW190. I think one of his next projects is a FW190 with a Moki 300.

MattyMatt 02-16-2015 07:16 AM

Lol... Gotz is a very good friend.

He knows I'm eye balling that 190! We have a few other projects to do before that one. I need more time in a day.

Great to hear about the 3W, I was told they were no longer making them. That's great news.

You're doing some really nice work on the Bearcat! The 300 makes a TON more power than the 250... it will be insane.

rbgetz 02-16-2015 07:26 AM

OK.. I had to add this video. If you like the FW190 with a Moki.. this is my favorite video of that plane. Not sure who's kit though.

That is exactly why I want to do one. Great video... little rough on the landing... lol.

I then copied on cardboard and fit for the bulk head. As you can see by the cardboard templates, the bulkhead fit fairly tight

Hi Frode,

3W didn't give much on detail with the Kit, but when I get back home this evening I'll post what they have for the throws. There's also a thread on here that shows what they recommended. I know most are flying with the C.G. at 7.5" from the LE at the wing root. Regarding the Blue Flex curve, I bought on line her in the U.S. It works pretty good. Here's the website: http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/16M...libration.aspx

I'm going to be posting more pictures in a few days, but here's a few on the forward bulkheads I built using the flex curve. I'm not done yet, but know working on aft bulkheads and tail wheel assembly.

Hi Rob,

Many thanks for the reply. This was helpful.
I have been looking for the throw info on the excellent thread by Mark Shapiro. He actually mention he has them, but I could not find them in the thread.
Great if you would post them.:)

I wish work didn't get in the way....continuing to work on the Bearcat. I had ordered a custom 4 blade wood prop from SEP in Germany. Arrived this week. I plan to use this for the maiden. it's a 29"/20 size. Really nice. I'll probably add yellow tips and some serial number nomenclature I got from Pro-Mark to make it a little more scale.. It came with the 10mm center hole and will have to bore it to 12mm for the 300.

Worked on the exhaust. use copy tubing and soldered to a plate and then a few wood wedges which will be epoxied in. I think they will hold well. I thought I'd try the Alclad airbrush paints. never used them before. first painted with a "pale burnt metal" and the some "jet Exhaust" over it. they came out pretty good. I plan to use the Alclad paints for the exhaust plate on the side of the fuselage.

Greg Wright 03-03-2015 10:53 AM

You should have made those exhaust functional!!
