Ignition removed and waiting....probably a week and weíll try it again😃

BobH 11-14-2017 10:35 AM

I've had a bad ignition on my 160 and so has a friend of mine.
Bummer that they are so crappy..! Also if you wanted a spare I think horizon wanted near $800.. EKKkkkk

hang on to your money BobH.....I called Adrian at CH Ignitions and he is in the process of making one for this engine. It would be a good idea to call him if you are interested to give him incentive that there are folks out there in need of an ignition for this engine. I will need two since I have two engines and I know two others that will also need it. Itís almost like a rescue job for me

n8622t 11-24-2017 12:24 PM

2 hours 25 minutes and still running perfect

n8622t 11-24-2017 02:16 PM

Three hours 16 minutes run time on ground should do it

BobH 11-24-2017 06:01 PM

Looks great! I have about 2.5 running hours on mine. Some at full throttle and slightly below. I'm pretty sure mines broken in as well.
Oh did you get Stainless Steel push rods from UMS? and if so.. did you have to buy them or did they replace the older style?

im pretty sure the SS pushrods will have to be a purchase but i plan on buying two sets. My first 160 has about 20 gallons of fuel ran through it and has never missed a lick....hope this one works as well as the first👍

The maiden occurred last weekend and went very well. The video didnít happen due to technical difficulties (operator). The Evo160 lifted the Model at 1/2 throttle and ran very smooth. I needed no trim whatsoever which was a wonderful surprise!!
the gear came up but the doors interfered so I put them back down during the flight. After 10 min of flight I dropped the flaps 1/2 on base then full on final....no pitch changes occurred and I left about three clicks of throttle and she settled in on a smooth glide path with a small amount of power. Winds were 7-10 on the runway heading. The La-7 came right down to the asphalt and flared without a single ballon and a gentle touchdown. This model is as easy to fly as a P-47 and itís a definite keeper.
The bad news is that the Evo160 was making a clicking noise as she taxied back so there wasnít any other flight made. Iím bery disappointed with the engine and itís on its way back to Horizon
the temps for the flight day was low 70ís and the engine ran well but I decided to open up three more spots on the cowl to let more heat out. If Horizon offers my money back on the engine Iíll take it and order a moki 180....to be continued 👍👍

BobH 12-08-2017 04:28 PM

Good luck with a refund. My best guess is it's not going to happen :(
On the other hand what do you think the clicking noise is from?
That would be good to know..
Congrats on a successful maiden!

Thanks BobH...thereís a problem in the cam block...theyíll have to replace the cam block to fix it so Iím just waiting to see what they do. Itís still on warranty so itís a free one this time. This is an awesome flying model so itís gonna have a good engine on front one way or another👍

warbird04 12-09-2017 12:12 AM

Hello Jimmy,

Congratulation for your maiden. You see that the La-7 is a perfect warbird! And yes, a moki 180 is a good idee, and will be a great performer...

n8622t 12-09-2017 05:27 AM

Thanks warbird....I received confirmation yesterday so Horizon has the engine. If they repair it I will be happy. The Evo160 is a real powerhouse, it will turn the same prop 900 rpm more than the moki 150 and runs about 50 degrees cooler, so I really do hope that Horizon can repari it. I have the same engine on my Stearman with 100 flights and Ive had nothing but good service from it. Oh well I guess we will see

BTY warbird , thank you for sharing the CG info and flying surface movement ranges, they were perfect and nothing needed to be changed👍😃

The Evo160 is back. I spoke with the mechanic and they replaced the entire cam block with a brand new one then tested the engine to ensure the problem wasn’t duplicated. I should have it mounted some time tomorrow I feel confident that the engine is repaired and look forward to flying the Model again

BobH 12-16-2017 05:45 PM

Good news!!

n8622t 12-17-2017 08:00 AM

got information on the Evo160 pushrods from UMS.....changed from aluminum to stainless steel to eliminate the mushroom problem HH doesnt know anything about them, go figure

Good to see some more LA-7's out there. Mine's a brute with a DLE-120 in the nose.

My first flight video....tenth flight

BobH 05-21-2018 06:31 AM

Jimmy,
Congrats!
The plane looks great and the engine sounds wonderful, nicely done!
Question, Do you have to access the primer bulb on the engine when you start it or no?

n8622t 05-21-2018 03:37 PM

Yes I do BobH....I built removable hatches on the cowl, one for needles and one for the carb bulb. The landing was a little on the rough side and it’s because the plane is nose heavy so I’m gonna rebalance it tomorrow and that will fix the landings. I’ll try to get another video this upcoming weekend. Going to a big warbird fly in in Monroe, Louisiana
thanks for the nice comments

n8622t 05-21-2018 03:43 PM

By the way, that entire flight including the manuvures was done at 1/2 throttle
