P51 - Top Flight Giant Big Beautiful Doll needs wing

I have this plane from Top Flight -

1/5 Giant P-51D Mustang GP ARF 2.1-2.8, 84.5" (TOPA0700)

The Fuselage is in perfect condition but the wing was badly built at the manufacturer and keeps coming apart on landings.

I keep fixing it and it lasts a few flights then starts cracking in the middle of the right wing. For some strange reason the left side is still perfect.

Is there any options to building a new wing with available Plans .

Is the Wing the same from a Gold Edition Kit - I heard the kit plane is different from the ARF version.

Will they ever sell the replacement win again.

how are your building skills? At the end of the season, you can strip it down and rebuild or buy a wing kit thru tower hobbies I believe

I don't see why it's not fixable,, Pictures of the problem area are needed to give solid advise,

Hope they get a replacement wing set in that's my only hope.

Gotta be a crusty old guy in your club who knows how to fix stuff,, ask around, you might be surprised what a bottle of bourbon gets you

Basil Yousif 11-18-2019 04:35 PM

I can fix it but if I could build one from scratch It wouldn't fail like this wing.

Basil, that doesn't sound right.Does it break in the same place?? Are you using epoxy??

Spychalla Aircraft 11-19-2019 10:51 AM

Basil, I have a brand new set of the TF GS ARF wings with the joiner and the servo cover plates that I can sell you. Horizon Hobby offers them for $279.99 plus shipping but they are back ordered which we know they may or may not become available again. So I will offer these to you at $275 plus you pay shipping from WI to CA. Send me a PM and let me know.

The wing for the kit built versus the ARF are significantly different. I have both and they are not comparable at all. I think you would have significant trouble trying to retrofit a kit wing to the ARF fuse. Leo

This may be important info to whom ever wants to try and install a TF P-51 kit wing on a TF P-51 ARF Mustang or vice versa. It's from an 2004 post, quote " TF Giant P-51 ARF wing on Kit Fuselage can be done" unquote.

This is the link to the thread on how to do it. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-w...-can-done.html

Here's some Pictures of the last landing breakage. Maybee the Sierra retracts are too rigid or heavy. Maybe switching to a 4" Dubro Blow up tire will give me more spongy landings. The Fuselage is in perfect condition after all this.

The damage is a clear indication that the "shear webs" were installed incorrectly during wing assembly at the factory. The shear webs were installed with the grain running horizonal with the wing spar instead of vertical. Your damaged wing is fixable and is fairly easy to do, it just takes a bit of patience and time. If you purchase a new wing set, the new wing set may have the shear webs installed incorrectly too. You will be able to confirm if the shear webs are installed correctly in the new wing set by inspecting the shear webs that are visible in the land gear mounting area.

See attached link for the kit build wing manual, page 15, step 15, on shear webs installation.

Thanks you really know your building. I think the new wing should be good these were a bad run that probably are all destroyed by now. I'll fix it and get this extra one as a extra.
Is the Sheer web the Balsa Sheeting Covering the Ribs of the Wing. If so how would they bend it at a curve around the rib if the grain ran front to back.
May bee that's why one guy said he Fiberglass's the wing and doesn't have any problems.

This is a good place to start

Basil, shear webs are attached to the upper & lower spars between each rib, not directly to the ribs. When shear webs fail due to being installed with the grain running horizontal with the upper and lower spars, the upper & lower spars will flex enough in flight and during landing that the upper and lower wing sheeting will split. The spars will flex to a point where they will pop out of their slots in the ribs, even though they are glued to the ribs as can be seen in your photos of the damage to the wing.

Yep you r right I looked in the wing and there grain is running horizontally. Ok this is great info i'll rebuild the wing and install thin plywood Shear webs where I can.

CK1 11-30-2019 07:39 AM

While you're in there rebuilding lay some 2oz fiberglass in the retract bays to tie the gear rails , ribs and spars together. This will greatly reduce the stress on the rails and spars during those less than perfect landings .

Basil Yousif 12-01-2019 03:24 PM

I love to use the Marine Grade Epoxy and Fiberglass mesh to reinforce the retract area. But can't compensate for incorrectly built wing.

into pieces. My old wing had incorrectly installed Sheer webs - This wing had no Sheer webs at all!!

I am looking for a new wing as I assume you are too. I talked to Carolina custom kits the other day about producing a wing for the p51 arf wing. He needs a donor. I would send mine in but there may be a chance I can repair mine. I won’t know until after I move and have time to work on it. The stock wing needs modifications. I would love to have the option to build my own wing for the arf. It would most certainly be stronger and better. Was there enough of the wing left to salvage to make a template? If so, maybe it could be sent in and a new kit/arf wing to be produced. It may be worth a call if you are looking to replace the wing. They are hard to find. I am looking if anyone has one to sell. I may have a used one I can purchase, but I haven’t heard back yet.

Basil Yousif 05-19-2021 09:31 AM

I think it would cost way too much to send them a wing and have them rebuild it. I would look to getting out of this plane at that point and seeing if I could get a Phoenix Models P51
https://zigirc.com/ph100-p51-mustang-5055cc-2 $599 - but the shipping charges are like $300, but they give you a set of air retracts with the plane.
Or the Hanger 9 P51

spitfire66 05-19-2021 01:51 PM

I meant just to send them the pieces so they can make a template. I don’t think I’m going to mess with fixing mine. I will be contacting them to see if we can work something out with pricing and manufacturing a plan and short kit. I am in the process of moving, but when I have time I’ll get to work. I think I’ll try to ca things back together, cut in 3 sections, and mail it in. I’ll keep you posted. I’d rather build my own wing at this point as the mods required to beef it up and scale it out requires a lot of work anyway.

Basil Yousif 05-19-2021 03:03 PM

Let me know what you find out. If it's reasonable I'll get in on it.

Plans needed for the gold edition P-51 kit

I am looking for anyone who has plans for the original gold edition as I need to build a new wing from scratch. Plans and remainder of my kit didn't make it here in our move, so I have a mostly complete fuse and no wings. Also need full set of retracts, cockpit interior, canopy and belly duct. This is a circa 2000 kit and even have the US 41CC (new) engine. Any engine advice would be welcome as well, as I feel this one needs a bit more power. Thinking of a DA60 or DA85.
