UMS Radial Engines

I started with an Evolution 7-160 and have enjoyed the performance which led me to continue with the improved UMS radials. Fortunately Adrain at CH-Ignitions is a distributor and fully capable with the repair and replacement parts for these engines. I recently had an ignition problem in a new engine and Adrian supplied me with the new upgraded version ignition which fixed the problem. I am running several of the UMS radials and so far they are mechanically sound. I started this thread for anyone that may have questions regarding these engines…troubleshooting is always better with more than one head in the game so feel free to participate with any and all comments anyone may have

Good idea on this thread. I'll be working with the new 150cc 5 cylinder due to be released soon. I have worked with the 7 cylinder 77 glow engine and it was pretty nice but its glow fuel and were switching over to gas on our projects. Looking forward to more first hand info. Mods might move this thread over to the engines section BTW.

Glad you joined Chris… I just finished the 5-180 install on my N-28 and have only ran it in the ground so far. Lots of power

n8622t 08-28-2021 01:13 AM

The 5-180 I have found to be thirsty for prime on start up, so you might be aware when you first start your 150. Post some pics when you get it😀

Here is my previous install, 5-125 on a TopRcModels FW 190. It’s also a thirsty starter

That’s basically the same set up my friend and I are doing on the TRC FW-190 with the 150. Do you think the pump is necessary from your experience?

my first two engines were evolution 7-160cc engines and I ran both without pumps. In order to run the engines without pumps, I had to set both needles a full turn or more out beyond the factory settings to run without being lean. One of the two evolution 7-160cc had a mechanical failure after 5 years of use, something wrong with the cams. I replaced that engine with the UMS 7-160 and added a pump. With the pump installed, both needles were set a bit leaner from factory settings. Then I mounted the 5-125 without a pump on the FW190 and found that I couldn’t get the needles out far enough to get the engine to run rich, so I added the pump and it fixed the problem. The tank on the 190 is close to the carb , within 4”.
I’m running a pump on all of them including the newly installed 5-180. The pumps help in a tremendous way

I am considering the UMS 260 five cylinder for a new project, so greatly appreciate the info you are providing on the UMS line of radial engines.

Looks like I’ll be ordering the 5-180 for our FW-190 project. I’m pretty excited because this will be a nice combo and the sound will be outstanding. The 5-150 sold out I guess and that’s fine the 180 is more flexible for future builds anyway.

I have a few of their engines and do recommend a pump to be used. Do not use the pump it comes with.

Can you confirm the maximum diameter of the 5-180 engine? Since you have the Top RC FW can you tell me if the 5-180 can fit the cowl?

unfortunately it won’t fit…I started out the same way and had to go to the 5-125 and it’s too big as well

OK so just to be clear the diameter they specify on the factory drawing is not correct? The 180 won't physically fit in the cowl?
Did you have to modify the cowl to fit the 125?

I know were slightly off topic but the diameters of the engines being misrepresented is important.

EDIT; I see now the drawing has two diameters and the larger one is basically 11 inches OD

I think it’s interesting the new 150 is smaller in diameter than the 125

n8622t 09-04-2021 03:22 AM

If you have any doubt about the literature, call Adrian at CH-Ignitions. He is the rep and can definitely get you on track. The 5-125 and 5-180 won’t fit the TopRcModels FW190 but it would be nice to see the 150 fit

look at that 5-100cc. It’s just over 9 inches in diameter which will be an easy fit for a 10 inch cowl

Chris Nicastro 09-06-2021 11:32 AM

I ordered the 5-150 so we’re going to find out soon!
